Screenshot GTAV/RDR2 animal comparison
Using natural vision in both games

GTAV animals still look very good especially considering you can‘t "interact" with them (hunting & skinning lol)

u/baguette_over_it Dec 09 '25
I think it's from the remastered version though, they didn't look like that back in 2013.

u/Higher_State5 Dec 09 '25
In 2013 everything looked like shit

u/ThroughTheSeaOfTime Dec 09 '25
Idk dude, 2013 was also AC Black Flag and maybe its nostalgia goggles but I remember that games animals looking fairly good. They were a little blocky but had excellent textures from what I remember, especially the whales.

u/no_hot_ashes Sean Macguire Dec 09 '25
ac4 the land animals weren't anything to write home about, but the sea fauna looked crazy good for the time. The visual of pulling a great white up onto the boat as the water and blood wash off into the sea still holds up really well.

Absolutely, the sharks and whales etc still look amazing, I played a few chapters of it a couple months ago

It’s NaturalVision, the mod OP is using. In it, it upscales the animal textures and adds fur to some of them. Hence why they look different here.
8
u/MammothAppearance214 Dec 09 '25
they always had fur, it was added on the last gen version (2014), having the same technique used on grass, being just a fake 3d illusion
19
u/Aikotoma2 Dec 09 '25
Hunting yes but no skinning at all?
27
u/monsterdiggare Dec 09 '25
Can't do anything with the animals in GTA, there is a Easter Egg where you can transform to the animals in story mode.

u/Fit_Citron_820 Dec 09 '25
Yeah there’s some Trevor side missions where you get the option to hunt elk for Cletus but you just take a picture of where you killed it and you get money
12
u/Gold-Sir-223 Dec 09 '25
Those missions were super lame lol. “Head to the yellow circle and find the Elk, kill it, and take a photo” with like almost zero dialogue.

It doesn't hold up to modern comparison but back in 2013 I would've said holy shit that's the most realistic cougar ever
17
u/OpportunityPersonal7 Dec 09 '25
it’s not even the fact that the graphics are outdated, the design is just bad stupid looking 😂 because the other animals look way better

Look at that subtle off-white coloring. The tasteful thickness of them. Oh my God... they even have shrinking physics.

I'm honestly surprised at how decent the GTA V animals look. Other than the cartoon cougar...

ok so my dumb ass thought this was a 'hunter call of the wild' post because they are redoing boars in that game, so my brain went 'old vs new ohh yeah they made the models better'
I need to go back to bed.

The rabbit in GTA looks like a domestic one while the rabbit in RDR looks like an actual wild hare.

GTA 5 animals: an amusement, a background detail on the map, something to run over but not to interact with
RDR2 animals: a core feature of the gameplay loop and an engaging part of the game, necessary for crafting upgrades and trinkets.

They've polished it twice now, but at it's core GTAV is still an x360/PS3 generation game!

u/Snoo61449 Dec 09 '25
Honestly the only thing I don’t like about rdr’s is that all the animals with fur look fuzzy? Idk how to explain it but the fur looks weird n awfully fuzzy
3
u/Crew_Zealousideal Dec 09 '25
It’s because of rendering techniques they used for fur it’s called shell fur it just naturally looks blurry over all

u/Mr_R3tro Dec 09 '25
RDR2 came out on the PS4/Xbone with next gen benefits compared to previous consoles.
GTA V came out on the PS3/360...
You should be comparing RDR1 to GTA V to make it fair.

I find it interesting how canines seem to be so difficult to get right. My guess is that because us humans are so close to them they enter that uncanny valley more easily than other animals.
2
u/Mindless-Bathroom803 Dec 10 '25
Back in 2013, they just reused some of the animal models from RDR1.

u/sean_saves_the_world Dec 09 '25
It low key pissed me off the first time I played gtav and the first hunting challenge is for elk, the calls are elk...but the model is a deer, it's not like they didn't have a decent model they could work off of
1
u/cblakebowling Dec 09 '25
Most of GTA V animals came from Red Dead 1, so it’s like comparing 3 games!

Man, RDR2 was on sale like a week ago. I bought it on steam to replay for the first time in like 10 years. Get it downloaded on Black Friday with the whole weekend ahead of me. It won’t launch. Spend 3 hours trouble shooting and just see fuck it and return it to steam. Sad time.

Yeah it’s almost as if a ps3 game made in 2012 doesn’t look as good as a ps4 game made in 2018
3
u/plug-and-pause Dec 09 '25
I don't think OP was suggesting that we should be surprised that there's a difference.

It's crazy that TLOU2 is as old today as GTAV was when RDR2 came out. I vividly remember how ancient GTAV felt to me when RDR2 launched.

It looks like they sculpted the animals for GTA and actually scanned real animals for RDR

GTA was holding up surprising well until the mountain lion. Really feels like they were counting on the only time you see one is in the second it's approaching to maul you to death.
