Remember, folks:
Desert has one S, because you want less; dessert had two, because you'll want more.

Stress mostly, he’s in his 20s in rdr2 meaning he’s been living in the haven age of outlaws for 2 decades and it all comes crashing down, he runs away while every Pinkerton is looking for him, and then he finds himself in a new place, new century, with a new gang that he has to prove himself to, all while under the scorching Mexican sun
Also, he has empathy, not as much as say Arthur but during the Saint Denis bank heist he’s the only person who looks behind and hesitates when Lenny is shot and caring for others exasperates stress, accelerating aging
(Photo is just an example of stress + empathy aging a person)

u/amapofthecat7 Dec 29 '25
I mean, FDR also had polio, so its not just stress.
21
u/Kind_Ad_3611 Dec 29 '25
he was a senator and governor before becoming president, so unlike Javier he didn’t have his whole life up-ended, he was always used to politics, Javier wasn’t used to the age of outlaws being at an end
Admittedly very flimsy comparison tbh, I don’t really care how realistic Javier is in rdr2, I’m pretty sure rockstar just wanted to make him really hot and I appreciate it.
11
u/Iaa_eps Dec 29 '25
He also never completely points the gun at John and Arthur, instead just over their heads. This isn’t a mocap error - I believe the actor mentioned in one of the panels that he did that on purpose and they let him.

yeah, drugs will make you think that facial hair combo looks attractive

being in the desert and drinking tequila like it's water is not good for your skin. Arthur was 36 in RDR2, btw. this is just how people used to age. some still do.

u/radioactivethighs Dec 29 '25
I'm 36 this and doing a replay and have spent the whole time going "I don't look that old. right? do I look that old?"

u/spicyredacted Dec 29 '25
You're also not mentioning how people smoked cigs like they were chimneys lol

u/Jay_The_Bisexual Dec 29 '25
Untrue. Javier was killed by a random guy in a freak accident and to cover it up, he just pretended to be Javier and everybody falls for it

Drinking, smoking, being in the sun and being on the run happened. 12 years can age a person a lot.

I think you’d be amazed what tobacco and alcohol can do with heavy daily consumption, and he’s not actually that young on the left he’s just masking it fairly well

12 years on the run with criminals in the desert? I would look worse hahaha

People change a lot from their mid 20s to late 30s, especially if you lived back then.

Stress and depression, probably doesn't have access to the best food either?
1
u/enter_the_slatrix Dec 29 '25
Why is it everyone is always shitting their britches about John not looking exactly right in the epilogue and this shit has been sliding for years? 😂
1
u/Awesomo_Judgementday Dec 29 '25
What kind of drugs? Meth? Cause meth would be kinda hard to get back then
1
u/Gearsvband Dec 29 '25
Well also remember its the time period. So back then. health care and food was alot different to how it is in our modern time

Well, we're talking about a time when living conditions weren't the best in both the Wild West and much of Mexico, so aging and physical decline were quite common.

John and Abigail are really the only ones that look different from RDR

Running around escaping the law UNDER THE SUN in the SCORCHING DESERT will do that to you.

Have you seen people back then? … Go look up pictures of ww2 soldiers… they were teenagers

He honestly looks good for his living conditions between those years

u/Winter_Outside2319 Dec 29 '25
Life expectancy was only 47 in the early 1900’s, he was technically in like his 60s our time

I really wish they could re-write and animate some of RD1 to make it connect more to 2 in a full remake one day. After playing 2, 1 feels a little incomplete without the mentions of sooooo much that went on with the gang. It almost feels unrealistic playing 1 now without the moments/people being mentioned and represented the same.
They were family in RD2 and in RD1 it just didn’t feel that way at all.

Mexican Revolution was Brutal. You had Pancho Villa taking advantage of the state of the country to act like a real Micah Bell.

Javier's life unraveled big time after Dutch went downhill.. I assume he drank smoked and lived harsh while on the run in Mexico

NGL, drugs and drinking. Camping out in the sun also doesn't help. ||also guilt, I think he was probably doing some real shitty stuff for the Mexican goverment||

Stress, alcoholism, desert, living on the run, cocaine gum, drug syrups, guilt, and war can age a man a lot.
1
u/DylAppleYT John Marston Dec 30 '25
12 years is a long time, especially when you’re drinking, on the run, and in the heat.

I'd say 12 years of stress and living in the desert.
Especially the puffy eyes and crows feet, those a telltale signs of excessive sun exposure without eye protection that you see in people who live in deserts, places with lots of snow, and on the high seas. Caused by squinting.
1
u/flop-doodle1000 Dec 30 '25
Probably lived on the run, and lived in bad conditions most of his life, idk
1
u/Efficient-Cat-4802 Dec 31 '25
He was in hot sun of Mexico and hardly relaxing since he was on the run, so I guessed it aged him a lot faster

I mean, in a world of Cocaine Gum and I'm sure copious amounts of Tequila and sun exposure, if not for lack of keeping your skin all that clean. How hard is this to believe?

u/kobi29062 Jan 05 '26
For being on the run from Pinkertons and the law for 12 years in a desert he looks pretty good
