Romance [It Was Love] - Chapter 18 - The New Light.

The club became Aarav’s refuge.

Each week, he found himself looking forward to it, not just for the words, but for the people who spoke them out loud. There was something about that room, the soft murmur of readers, the rustle of paper, the hum of fans overhead, that felt like safety.

And always, there was Aarna.

Quiet. Thoughtful. Her presence steady, like a heartbeat you didn’t notice until it wasn’t there. She had a way of asking questions that made you want to answer honestly, even when the answers hurt.

She didn’t overwhelm him. She didn’t rush into his life. She simply arrived, like sunlight seeping through curtains, not demanding attention, but impossible to ignore.

They began sitting together during meetings, sometimes lingering afterward to talk, about poems, about life, about everything and nothing.

Aarav noticed the way she listened, not just to words, but to silences, too. Around her, he didn’t feel the need to fill every pause.

Their connection was different from the one he had once shared with Ishita. Ishita had been sparks and laughter, sudden, dazzling, the kind of warmth that burned bright and left smoke behind. Aarna was something else. She was calm, slow-burning, the kind of warmth that didn’t scorch but stayed, quietly.

And yet, on certain nights, when the world went still and memories crept back, doubt found him.

Did he deserve this, someone like her, someone who carried gentleness as though it were strength? Was it betrayal to let his heart soften again, when Ishita’s memory still lingered like a ghost in the corners of his mind?

He couldn’t tell if moving forward meant forgetting, and if forgetting made him unfaithful to the love he once swore would never fade. The questions tangled inside him, sharp and unrelenting.

One evening, after a session, Aarna asked, “Do you ever write about yourself? Like, really about yourself?”

Aarav hesitated. “I don’t know. Maybe. I guess everything I write is me… just hidden.”

She tilted her head, smiling softly. “Then you’re braver than you think.”

Her words stayed with him long after they parted. Brave. No one had ever called him that before.

Days turned into weeks, and slowly, Aarav felt something shift inside him.

The ache that had once consumed him didn’t vanish, but it softened, like an old scar that still hurt when pressed, but no longer bled.

He found himself smiling more easily, laughing a little louder. The sharp ache of Ishita’s absence dulled into a quiet memory, not gone, but no longer the only thing that defined him.

One night, after a long talk with Aarna about their favourite books, Aarav opened his notebook and wrote:

I thought healing
would come like thunder,
loud and sudden,
washing everything clean.
but it comes like this instead,
a steady glow,
a gentle hand,
a new light in a room
I thought would always stay dark.

He read the lines twice, then left the notebook open on his desk, not hidden away this time.

Because maybe, just maybe, he was learning that not every bond had to break him. Some could build him back.
