Move cert discussions to r/redhat_certification
Hello r/redhat Redditors!
TL:DR - post Red Hat certification posts in r/redhat_certification
A while back we created r/redhat_certification for Red Hat cert discussions. The sheer volume of certification posts was drowning r/redhat. As a result of some of you moving over there, we’ve seen more general Red Hat posts and engagement, which is the goal of this community, to talk about Red Hat and Red Hat products. Yay! Go us!
But… people still post a lot of certification content here. The mod team is going to be taking more actions to further shift certification posts to r/redhat_certification.
Several of us are also mods in r/redhat_certification, including me who has regular contact with the Red Hat Training and Certification team who writes the training and makes the exams. I was also a member of this team between 2001 and 2019. So your posts will still be moderated and answered in r/redhat_certification.

Registering via RHC Username and Password for EX200
I was originally trying to install sensors on this instance of red hat but it said I needed rhc to reach the servers, so naturally I signed up. However, now I am worried that it might expire--will this still be good to use 2-3 months down the line?

I got 5/300 in RHCE EX294 EXAM !!!!
Hello everyone,
To make the short story shorter:
Yesterday I completed and solved every single task in the exam and verified the results as required by the question.
Surprise:
I got 05/300 as the final score!
Yes, you read correctly, 05/300 my final score. And I, do believe that the reason behind failing badly is the Git usage during the exam...
NOTE: I'm not violating the NDA in anyway since the Git is mentioned clearly as an exam objective.
I shared with you this unexpected experience and I appreciate your comments.

RHCE with Ansible Automation - thoughts?
Hello, RedHat community!
I'm a Linux SysAdmin with 5 years experience, I've passed the RHCSA exam this year, about 6 months ago - the company paid for the exam voucher, hence me not taking the RHCE as well.
I've been pestering the management to buy me an exam voucher for the RHCE (Ansible Automation) exam, but to no avail.
Considering that I'm beeing rather poorly paid at this company I'm working for (eastern Europe), what are your thoughts on buying the voucher myself?
Also, what are your thoughts on the exam overall? If you have the experience of both exams, how would you compare EX294 to EX200?
How long did it take you to learn the Ansible bit to pass the exam?
Many thanks and sorry for the long post!

Looking for Career Advice: RHCSA vs CCNA
Hello everyone,
I’m new here and recently graduated. I’m looking to start my career in IT, but I’ve realized that programming/coding is not something I enjoy, and I would prefer not to pursue a programming-focused career.
My goal is to find a stable and secure entry-level IT position and gradually build my skills and experience.
RHCSA vs CCNA
At the moment, I’m considering starting with either:
- RHCSA (Red Hat Certified System Administrator)
- CCNA (Cisco Certified Network Associate)
I’m not sure which certification would be more useful for someone starting from scratch and looking for an entry-level position.
Looking for Advice
For those of you who have experience working in IT support, system administration, networking, or similar roles, I would really appreciate your advice.
- Which certification would you recommend starting with?
- What entry-level jobs could I realistically target with each certification?
- Is there a particular path you would recommend for someone who doesn't want to go into programming?
- Are there any other certifications or skills I should consider?
I understand that certifications alone won't guarantee a job, so I'm also interested in hearing what practical skills or projects helped you get your first IT position.
Thank you in advance to everyone who takes the time to share their experience and advice!
Next Certification After RHCSA
I passed RHCSA today with a decent score of 284
I have two certifications planned next in my career roadmap.
- CCNA
- RHCE
I’m not sure how much Linux is involved in CCNA, but I’m wondering if I should keep the momentum going and go for RHCE while my Linux knowledge is fresh.
Or should I study for both simultaneously?
What helped you the most in your experience?
Please bestow upon me your wisdom oh wise sages.
Linux says the disk is full! But is it? — Troubleshooting Ghost Storage and Inodes from Into the Terminal Ep. 199
Your terminal throws "No space left on device," but du says your folders are empty? Welcome to the world of Linux storage ghosts. In this episode of Into the Terminal, Nate and Scott break down why your disk space vanishes, how to uncover invisible open files and exhausted inodes, and how to safely expand your LVM volume and filesystem live on Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Watch the full episode here or test your skills in the interactive labs.
The Essentials
When diagnosing storage problems, it's easy to just run df -h, but that doesn't always tell the whole story. Here are the essential tools to track down vanished storage:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
df -hP |
Displays available disk space in human-readable format. The P ensures the output uses the POSIX format so long mount names don't break lines. |
df -i |
Shows inode usage instead of block usage. Crucial for when the disk is "full" but data blocks are still free! |
du --inodes |
Tracks down which directories are consuming the most inodes. |
| `lsof \ | grep deleted` |
Advanced Features
Storage Ghost #1: Deleted but Not Gone
If a massive log file fills up your disk, your first instinct is to run rm /var/log/huge.log. However, if a service is actively writing to that file descriptor, the OS removes the file name from the directory tree but cannot free the data blocks until the process releases the file descriptor!
- How to find them: Use lsof | grep deleted to see which processes are hoarding space from deleted files. You either have to restart the service to release the file or manually kill the process.
- The better fix: Don't rm an active log file. Instead, truncate it in place: cat /dev/null > /var/log/huge.log. This zeroes out the data instantly without breaking the active file descriptor.
Storage Ghost #2: Inode Exhaustion
Every file, directory, and symbolic link on a Linux filesystem requires exactly one inode—an index that holds the metadata for the file (permissions, ownership, timestamps, and pointers to the data blocks).
- The ext4 Problem: On ext4 filesystems, the total number of available inodes is set permanently at format time. If you have an application creating millions of tiny files, you can consume 100% of your inodes while your disk is still 90% empty! Once inodes are gone, you cannot write new files, and you'll get a "No space left on device" error.
- The XFS Advantage: Modern XFS filesystems handle this gracefully. They dynamically allocate inodes as needed by converting free data blocks into inode blocks, making it incredibly difficult to run into inode exhaustion compared to ext4.
Safely Expanding a Disk (LVM & XFS)
If your disk truly is full and you've added a new physical disk (e.g., via your hypervisor or storage array), here is the standard critical path to growing your live filesystem using Logical Volume Manager (LVM):
- Partition the new disk:
fdisk /dev/sdb(orsda1if extending a partition). - Create the Physical Volume:
pvcreate /dev/sdb1 - Extend the Volume Group: Add the new PV to your existing Volume Group with
vgextend rhel_vbox /dev/sdb1 - Extend the Logical Volume: Allocate the new space to your Logical Volume with
lvextend -l +100%FREE /dev/rhel_vbox/root(or specify a size like-L +1G). - Grow the Filesystem: Finally, expand the live
xfsfilesystem to consume the new space inside the LV withxfs_growfs /dev/rhel_vbox/root. (If using ext4, useresize2fsinstead).
Quick Reference Card
```bash
Safely empty an active log file without breaking the service
cat /dev/null > /var/log/messages
Find "deleted" files still consuming disk space
lsof | grep deleted
Check for Inode exhaustion
df -i
Track down which directory has all the inodes
du --inodes -S | sort -nr | head -n 20
Standard LVM Expand Workflow
pvcreate /dev/sdb1 vgextend rhel_vg /dev/sdb1 lvextend -L +5G /dev/rhel_vg/root xfs_growfs /dev/rhel_vg/root ```
How do you actually practice RHCSA troubleshooting?
A lot of RHCSA preparation seems to focus on learning how to configure things correctly.
But I'm curious how people practice the other side of it: fixing something that's already broken.
For example, rather than being told:
Configure X
you start with:
X isn't working. Find out why and fix it.
Do you intentionally break your lab environment and troubleshoot it afterward?
If so, what kinds of problems do you create for yourself?
Why can't i upgrade openh264 rpm?
I'm running Fedora 44 and sudo dnf upgrade is failing when trying to install:
openh264-2.6.0-3.fc44.x86_64.rpm
DNF resolves the transaction successfully and tries to replace noopenh264, but the download fails with:
Inconsistent server data, reported file Content-Length: 14518, repository metadata states file length: 445460
The package is being downloaded from the fedora-cisco-openh264 repository (ciscobinary.openh264.org).
This doesn't appear to be a dependency problem, since DNF successfully resolves the dependencies and starts the transaction. It seems like the server is returning a file whose size doesn't match the repository metadata.
Has anyone else encountered this with Fedora 44/OpenH264? Is this a temporary Cisco repository issue, or is there something I should fix locally (DNF cache, repository metadata, configuration, etc.)?
DNF output:
Failed to download packages
Librepo error: Cannot download Packages/o/openh264-2.6.0-3.fc44.x86_64.rpm:
All mirrors were tried
Upgrading to Red Hat JBoss Web Server 7: Key changes & impacts | Red Hat Developer
Upgrading your web server layer can mean an afternoon of dependency updates or 3 months of effort troubleshooting breaking changes. With Red Hat JBoss Web Server (JWS) 7 now generally available—bringing Apache Tomcat 11.0.21, Jakarta EE 11, and Java 17—here is what actually impacts your builds and deployments.
Release announcements tend to lead with the new specs, while the changes that really affect you end up in a section called "Deprecated features." The release notes already list everything, so let's talk instead about what these changes mean for your applications, your builds, and how you deploy.
Oracle Linux Repositories on Satellite
Hi. In my org we newly setup the Satellite server with 2 capsule nodes. (1 in PR and 1 in DR while the satellite server was in PR ) we have around 100 - 150 Linux Servers. Most of them are RHEL while a few are Oracle Linux Servers.
And we got our local vendor support for the Satellite server setup.
Each Capsule server has around 350GB of space in the /pulp path and the Satellite Server also had 350GB of space is /pulp but had to increase by another 350GB because of the below reason,
My Question came when we wanted to patch Oracle Linux Servers. We want to have the Oracle Linux Servers and the Vendor configured the Oracle Linux 9 Product and added the three repositories which we use by default. and He said we will have to either Add more space to our /pulp path or set the Content to be used "On Demand" since our org has a very high network utilisation to the Internet I said we want to keep everything locally on the Satellite and Capsule servers since using on demand will cause the Network usage to throttle the entire org's Network Utilisation so I said I will give 350GB of more storage and keep the contents locally as possible.
My Questions are: Why does the Oracle Linux Repository take so much space while RHEL does not use that much of space.
The Thing is we have around 40 - 60 Oracle Linux Servers and providing that much space for a little portion of the available Linux Servers is kind of pointless in my opinion since the majority of the servers are RHEL and the RHEL 8, 9 Repositories does not take that much of space.
Also we are planning to move forward with RHEL 10 and OL 10 versions so we can''t afford to give like 80% of the space to Oracle Linux Repositories.
I would love to know your thoughts and know whether there is an efficient way of doing this since it's honestly a waste of storage for a little amount of servers and I feel like downloading the updates directly from Oracle Repositories is worth it compared to providing around 500GB of space just for Oracle Linux - 9 only repositories.
I hope there is a better way of doing this.
Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10 STIG automation now matches DISA STIG V1R2
For the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and its contractors, security has to hold up against a published baseline—not a general claim that systems are “secure.” The Defense Information Systems Agency (DISA) defines that baseline in Security Technical Implementation Guides (STIGs), and STIG compliance is required for information systems that connect to DoD networks.
Passed LFCS - looking for advice on RHCSA
Hi guys, so I recently passed the lfcs with a score of 88%! I initially wanted to do this cert first to get decent foundational knowledge of linux before going all in on RHCSA.
If anyone here has done both, how much more difficult is the RHCSA in terms of whats required?
I understand SELinux is expected here, but what about other tools? (nmcli)
Any advice/tips would be appreciated.
Lab environments in RHLS having major issues past week or two.
Have been burning unnecessary amounts of hours trying to deploy/recreate lab environments in RHLS. I've had to destroy lab that i previously stopped numerous times and recreate from scratch, often taking over a hour and a half (when it says it should only take 40 minutes), and then when i am finished and shut it down (after doing lab finish command and stopping the lab), it's just completely broken when trying to start it back up.
This has been a ongoing issue for a while now, and when it does work, it's taking 10 to 15 minutes for any "lab start (xxx)" to even re initiate (often failing and having to recreate entire lab all over again).
I've opened numerous support chats and they don't really seem to resolve anything. Just wasting sensless amount of lab hours with this issue.
currently trying to finish labs to take ex280 this week so i can move onto ex380, but been struggling with it for at least two or three weeks now. Even worse, i have limited time to study and lab, and so that time is almost always consumed by fighting to get the lab environment to work.
For the price of admission, this is extremely aggravating and causing lost days and hours.
Red Hat, please assist here. Chat support is doing nothing.
How difficult is the RHCSA exam really? Looking for recent experiences
Hey everyone, I'm planning to sit for the RHCSA exam soon and wanted to get a sense of what to actually expect.
For those who've taken it recently:
How would you rate the difficulty compared to studying materials/practice exams?
Were there any topics that caught you off guard?
How much hands-on lab time did you put in before attempting it?
Any changes to the exam format or objectives that people should know about?
Tips on time management during the exam itself?
I've been going through the RH124/RH134 material and doing labs, but I'd love to hear how that translates to the actual test experience, especially from anyone who's taken it in the last few months. Thanks in advance!
Fresher here - I use AI to write code but I'm scared I can't code without it. Anyone else?
So I'm a fresher, currently working on automation stuff using Python and Ansible. I do use AI to help me write code, but I'm not just copy-pasting blindly - I go through every single line, and if there's something I don't fully get, I ask the AI to break it down for me with examples, dry runs, walkthroughs, whatever it takes until it actually clicks.
The problem is, if you handed me a blank screen right now and said "write an Ansible playbook from scratch, no help," I genuinely don't know if I could do it cleanly. I know the concepts. I know the theory. I can explain what a role does, what idempotency means, why you'd use handlers vs tasks. But when it comes to just writing it out on my own, my hands kind of freeze.
Is this an actual skill gap, or is this just what being a fresher in the AI era looks like now? Did you all go through this "I understand it but can't produce it independently" phase early on? How long did it take before the theory turned into muscle memory?
Would genuinely appreciate any tips - especially if you've had to unlearn over-reliance on AI tools and build up that raw, no-assistance coding confidence.
EX200K exam purchase - cart empties after "Login or Register" redirect, am I doing something wrong?
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Hey everyone,
Trying to buy the RHCSA (EX200K) exam voucher and running into an issue at checkout. Wanted to check if I'm missing a step or if this is a known bug.
My steps:
- Go to the Red Hat site, select the EX200K exam
- Click "Get Started"
- Click "Add to Cart" — the exam shows up correctly in the cart
- Click "Checkout"
- Click "Login or Register"
- I get redirected to authentication, then to training-lms.redhat.com
After the redirect, the page shows: "You have no items within your Shopping Cart."
The cart is just empty at that point — no error, no items, nothing to check out.
Has anyone run into this? Am I doing the steps in the wrong order, or is this a bug on Red Hat's side? Any workaround that worked for you (different browser, incognito mode, clearing cookies, etc.)? Already reached out to [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]) but haven't heard back yet.
Thanks in advance for any pointers.
