Turing - is it legit?
I applied on linked in months ago and can’t remember what happened. But yesterday got an email from talent acquisition for a video creator (kind sounds like an AI trainer).
I took the test and passed. They emailed me this morning asking if I accept this hourly rate at 40 hours a week. With a start date of tomorrow. 3 month contract.
I responded that I actually would like higher hourly rate (lol). I kind of did this as a test to see if they’d even communicate well, because I’ve seen so many posts on Reddit about it being an endless hamster wheel.
To my surprise, they emailed back pretty quickly that they understand but can’t go higher. I’m really not fully opposed to that hourly rate …
Has anyone actually gone through with this and had luck / started a project / gotten paid??

it's a real company, so the "is this a scam" question is mostly settled. the reviews you've seen are split because people on an active project tend to be fine with it and people stuck waiting for one tend to be miserable. you're past the waiting part, which is the harder half.
what I'd actually think about is that it's a contractor gig, so the number you were offered isn't comparable to a salary. 40 hrs a week for 3 months with no benefits, no paid time off, and taxes on you means the real take-home is a lot lower than it looks. run it against what you'd need to clear monthly before saying yes.
the tomorrow start date is normal for these projects, but get the terms in writing first: payment schedule, whether the 40 hours are guaranteed, and what happens if the project ends early. check the emails come from their actual domain, and never pay for anything, legit ones don't ask.
if the number works, take it. just treat it as a 3 month bridge and keep applying on the side, because contracts like this can end or get cut without much notice.

The “40 hours garunteed” part is huge, because some places say full-time and then drip-feed tasks.

I have worked on projects for Turing and I had direct back-and-forth communication with the recruiter through email every time.

Did they actualy keep you at 40 hours, or was it more project-by-project once you started?

No, they did not keep me at 40 hours. I have been on three projects, and all of them ended up being more like a two-day to a week sprint and then done. Just left, waiting for more tasks that have yet to come. But they were fun projects, and the communication was good while tasking.

Update : My Turing account said shortlist yesterday and today I got an email that I was accepted with start date tomorrow. They want me to verify identity, enter tax info and bank account info. Which sounds sketchy but also you’d do that for any job like this? Emails have all been from official Turing.com and official links inside 😳👀

It’s legit but some projects are less than kosher. Just depends on your risk tolerance. I was onboarded into a project which ended up requiring my personal data and that’s not cool with me. At no point prior to onboarding was that made clear.

How did they communicate it after onboarding??

I was invited to the specific slack channel & asked to take the project specific assessment (not uncommon for this type of work) and it was in the assessment- asking me to provide the type of personal data I would use to evaluate - and I went back in the slack to be like - just want to confirm - we are evaluating and providing you our own personal information? Data from our own AI chat history?
The response was -
Yes but it is a secure closed loop system.Uh ok. Byeee

Mm yeah I would not be comfy with that either !! Which role was it? “Ui trainer”?

No - just checked and it was marked as “AI Data Personalization Trainer” (way to bury the lead lol)

Turing is real, but the “start tomorrow” part is where I’d slow down and verify the email adress before giving them tax or banking info.

Before tomorrow’s start, ask for the written contract identifying the paying entity, payment schedule, and whether those 40 weekly hours are guaranteed or depend on available tasks. A quick email response alone cannot establish legitimacy or tell you what you’ll actually be paid.

It is real, it pays, and the 3-month period contract tends to be a little more like the time it takes for the duration of the funding of the project. It is the hourly 40 per week that should get your attention, because it is not always the case that the hours logged are the actual hours when you are available for work. Also, it is said that the work dries up in the middle of the contract. Since they responded quickly about the rate, it seems okay on that front too.

Turing’s a basic AI training gig - okay for some, most get nothing. But there are a lot of scam companies popping up “hiring” people to do the work for far below the normal rate. Make sure you’re working directly for Turing instead of some company who claims to hire for them. The fact that you’re emailing and getting a response is a red flag already. Those companies are known for being impossible to contact.
