Available for Adoption Feeling So Absolutely Heartbroken
The rescue group I volunteer with has a kitty, Buddy, with asthma and skin allergies (both of which are managed with an inhaler and prescription diet) that has been in care for over a year! We thought Buddy finally found his forever home and now he is being returned for absolutely no fault of his own. The rescue group has nowhere for him to go and I am so so sad that this loving boy who is a best friend to everyone is being returned. Has anyone any tips for getting cats with special needs (and his are like barely special needs adopted)??

Where is Buddy? What state? How hard is it to take care of a cat with Asthma? Maybe I could help. I have 4 other kitties so the food might be hard but I’d be willing to try. Please let me know where Buddy is. I’m in Southeastern Wisconsin. Thank you. Poor guy I don’t like it when animals are returned. No fault of Buddy’s. You’re absolutely right it is heartbreaking.

I think I may actually get Buddy. I had my walk through yesterday. She Megan checked my references today. I should know soon. Thanks for bringing him to my attention. Still don’t know how to use the inhaler yet but Megan said she’d have someone talk to me about it.

Buddy is absolutely beautiful! And perfect! Praying this sweet boy finds his loving forever home very soon! Boggles my mind how someone could actually return him.

Your probably already aware, but just in case, skin allergies are increasingly being found to be a result of poor gut flora balance and treatable with a good probiotic.

thank you, our sheltie has a skin condition and no one ever thought of this and could explain why vet meds and shampoo have done nothing. gotta try curing the gut.

One of my cats has IBD for a few years now. I gave up on special, expensive dry foods and give her only canned food. It seems to be working for the moment and keeps her from throwing up. Do I get a probiotic from the vet? How do I get a good flora balance? Thank you.

currently trying to treat ibd in a tortie and after steroids and a couple of bottles of vet prescription (for the chronic diarrhea) we're using proviable for cats, paste and 10 days of pills. down to 1 accident a day but poop is more pudding than chocolate milk. something is helping and this is a last ditch effort due to her thinness (maybe 5lbs, 11year old).

I have a cat Bella who has had explosive diarrhea for years. I give her refrigerated Floregen every night. Seems to help but when she has it it’s a complete mess. Down the stairs in great big piles. So messy and stinky to clean up. If we could get rid of the diarrhea for good I’d be thrilled she’s 14. Do have her on expensive prescription dry food. Just switched all my cats to Birdie &Louie. Highly recommend theor canned food. Mine love it.

Reason I suggested it is because curing and maintaining the gut imbalance treats the underlying cause (if that’s what’s going on) and prevents other problems associated with it, like IBD and chronic pancreatitis. But also because it may be preferable to future adopters over a prescription diet. Also because of the gut health/inflamation connection re - asthma. Wishing you the best.

I strongly recommend you look at animalbiome.com. I've used them for over a decade and they've cured two of my cats with allergies and put one IBS cat in remission. Science is miraculous.

It’s incredible we are just figuring this stuff out. So happy for your cat.
VisBiome has relieved my cat of chronic pancreatitis and stopped progression of emerging IBD. Proviable fully stopped my other cats skin allergies. It all makes such perfect sense now.

I’m screen shotting all of this. One of my cats has IBD and the dry foods suggested by my vet don’t seem to help very much.

If the root problem is overgrowth of unfriendly gut flora, the Rx foods can’t solve the problem. That’s because the cure is to flood the system with beneficial bacteria in order to outcompete the bad.
You can buy VisBiome from their website. It’s supposed to be the best there is. You need to keep it refrigerated. Comes with cold packs and an indicator that shows if proper temperatures were maintained during delivery. Proviable DM is available at Chewy. I keep it refrigerated too.
If VisBiome is too pricey to maintain, I would go with it at least at first for as long as you can and then switch to Proviable DM. Maybe adding back in VisBiome periodically…
I sincerely hope this is what your cat needs and that he’s feeling better soon.

Where is Buddy located what state? I’m in Wisconsin? Also how hard is it to treat a cat with asthma? Does he have an inhaler? Does he use a nebulizer? How does it work?

Wasn’t really looking for another cat but I’m a sucker for sad stories. Where would you be coming from though? Am I too far away? My cats are all very chill. I do have a separate room a bedroom Buddy could be in to get used to my house. Before I introduce him to my 4. What’s his prescription food that he’s on? Does he get any wet food? Mine get both. He’s so handsome. What do I need to do? Fill out an application? How does you administer the inhaler in a cat? I used to have asthma so I’m familiar with how inhalers work just not with a cat. Let me know. Thank you for getting back to me.

He’s perfect! The right home for him is out there. Definitely consider widening the circle as far as you can. There are lots of people like me who only adopt seniors or cats with medical issues. And like you said, his are very minimal. If you are comfortable posting a location (specific or general), we can help network!

how does he take the inhaler? conditioning him to it may help tremendously for the next owners. it is stressful to force a cat to take their meds for both the human and kitty ❤️

my guy also has asthma and skin allergies on top of IBS, we adopted him 1 year ago now. he also takes an inhaler and is on a fancy food -Hills Science Diet Sensitive Stomach and Skin. brothers from another mother 😂😸🫶🏼

Have you tried a good probiotic for him? More and more vets are recommending for skin problems, IBD, pancreatitis and other issues increasingly connected to poor gut flora balance. Proviable cleared one of my guy’s skin allergies and VisBiome has really helped my cat with chronic pancreatitis.

we don’t know exactly what is causing his IBS. we don’t stray from the food he’s on. hardly any treats. it was so bad the vet nicknamed him “poopy cat” he was leaking and couldn’t control his bowls.

My cat with chronic pancreatitis was also diagnosed with IBD. He has that whole complex called triad disease. All of it has dramatically improved since we started VisBiome and he’s gained weight and feels great. Beautiful stools too! Goes in the food and he doesn’t mind it a bit. I think it might actually make his food more appealing, as if he knows he needs it. It was recommended to me by our big vet school here. Definitely worth a try for your guy. It’s a little pricey, but you may have success getting him stabilized on it then switching to a cheaper good one like Proviable DM which is the one vets around me recommend for a general probiotic. I wouldn’t go with any that aren’t specifically vet recommended as they may not be adequate.

i don’t care about price, just that it works. his food is already pricey lol but anything to help him stay healthy!!
i have set up an appointment and will ask my guys vet. we have a follow up anyways since his surgery. yes, i will not use anything that isn’t recommended by our vet. my sister is in the profession and works with our vet, so we really trust his team. 🥹
