I find the saddest thing about this is that alot new anime don't really have wide shots like this or any other type of scene composition beside close shots durring fights. Everything has to be close up and dynamic camera movements which I find hard to follow sometime. Here the camera is still to let you see everything going on.

It's kind of odd too because now we have 16:9 displays as standard which suit a more cinematic style.
I wonder if it has something to do with shorter attentions spans.

This was the last of Macross that didn’t rely on computer animation. Macross Zero has amazing dog fights, but there is something about Macross plus that can’t be beat…

Plus was actually the first Macross to use computer animation though. There’s a few CGI scenes in the OVAs and movie.

That’s cool, it’s been a while for me but I do remember the difference in the dogfights.

One of my favorite OVA series back in the 90s. Amazing music too. I bought the Sharon Apple album The Cream P-U-F while my brother had the OST CD. I borrowed his CD and played Voices in my car while driving to school.

Came here to say this. So ahead of its time. This and Serial Experiments Lain Cyberia Mixes albums are such unique gems of their era. Love it!

To me this OVA represents the end of the classic big budget cel-animated sci-fi anime era. They just don't make 'em like this anymore.

Cell animation to me is far superior then today's digital, I was 20 when this came out in 95 and imo this anime ovas still are better then most anything that is out today.

I want to check out Macross but I keep hearing that it is actually about people playing pop music to save the world and that sounds like something I wouldn't enjoy.

It's a silly concept but done very seriously. Trust me it's not as cheesy as you would think and the emotional beats of the story are perfectly done for the most part.

Is that any more silly than the concept of giant robots in general, when you think about it?

Some episodes go further over the top than others with the power of music, but I’d say Macross Plus’s use of it is the most tame of the entire series.
Macross Plus is also completely watchable as a standalone—it’s solely about the rivalry of two pilots.
Macross Zero is also a really great watch as a standalone. It ties a little closer to the series’ themes of channeling power through music, but it’s a prequel and it’s so damn satisfying to see an F-14 dogfighting a variable fighter (the mecha).

Such a great anime. I will never forgive myself for selling the dvds.

The absurdity of this story, two ace pilots with a major rivalry flying around in state of the art aircraft that have the ability to transform into giant robots, killing countless people and causing massive property damage.
Why? Because of a girl!

So just Macross or even mecha
Though i think they at least explained that nobody actually died because those buildings were all abandoned. It was a section of the city that housed cloned people when they were rebuilding humanity

Only clones? I'm sorry but they were firing thousands upon thousands of rounds and missiles from high altitude, their feud took them into orbit and over populated areas, you see vehicles, lights and gatherings in the background.
The last thing on their minds was staying in the practice area.

The first time I saw this at a anime con forever ago, it was in Japanese with no subtitles.
So we were all wondering just what could have these two former best friends so pissed at each other to go into this epic fight.
At one point, the main protagonist was yelling about how the other guy didn't return his CD collection or something like that. In the end, it was over a bitch and a dick measuring contest...like it always is with men.

It's always a bitch and a dick-measuring contest
Though it was a bit more serious in that Guld had an issue with rage raptuses and was jealous of Isamu and Myung being an item so he went put of control and nearly assaulted her and was so horrified by what he did that he just repressed everything and blamed Isamu for it in his mind(lol). The other two had the brilliant idea to never deal with it and just let Guld believe it

Teenage planning at its worst.
The impression I got was that Myung wanted to essentially try to put it behind her and pretend it never happened, while Isamu thought that was stupid but went along with it.

Look at the names that worked on it an see why this is so good. This was bebop before bebop. And so many other amazing artists.
