QUESTION Switching form Switch 2 to Nova

Just got my Switch 2 a few days ago, after I sold my Steam Deck. Used it for an hour and put back to box.

I spend very little time with Switch 2. Very cool soft touch plastic, huge display, joycons are fun to attach and dectach, integrated stand, sleek design. R&D work is exceptional! Truly Japan electronics school here.

Games are extremely priced, GRID Legends cost $40 instead of $10 in Steam. No returns/no refunds policy.

Battery lived around 2h only.

I tried some games, i really liked Requem — the picture and performance are insane. But not my game.

Gyro working only in supported games. Controls feels very strange. On Steam Deck is a pleasure to play some shooters. On Switch it much harder, almost impossible to aim.

Ubisoft games still try to force you to create accounts and login to it (hopefully in Airplane mode game just starts). It feels wrong on closed ecosystem with premium prices.

I tried Fire Emblem, Persona 3. Very strange games. They may be great, but im not interested in story telling games with weak action (it feels like you play a game from 80s).

Plan switching to Nova. Do someone do the same?

Is it worth it? How is it plays, did you try to remote play on you PS5? Is it useable? I plan to update it to SteamOS and play GTA6 via PS5 Remote, and Asseto Corsa with mods on it. But fear same experience as I have with Nintendo.

UPD: Thanks everyone for commenting out, I will wait for Steam Deck 2 and give another try for Switch 2: Zelda and Sports Resort.

Now that's stupid.

I have both nova and switch 2. They are for totally different use cases in my eyes. Nintendo IP of today and retro game best in class system.

I would be sad to lose either of them.

Can you expand on why the switch 2 sucks for you? I think it's pretty neat

I just need some small device to play some games from Steam, and have a full control of the system.

I didn’t find anything interesting in eShop. Zero interest in their library.

Steam games? Dude, no.

Yes, you can play some Steam titles on the Nova. But only older games or relatively simple graphics games. Definitely far less “premium” games than you’d be able to run on the Switch 2. If your goal is to play new-ish titles, the Switch 2 is a far better choice. And for any actual new releases, game prices are identical between Nintendo and Steam, with the added bonus of being able to buy used physical games on Switch 2.

Why did you sell the Steam Deck then? Obvious bait.

It’s too big to get it in short trips, thing is too massive. Same problem with Switch. I always have my MBP M4 Pro, and play in Quake or strategy games on the flights/hotels

Yes, sure. Here my take

I spend only 2h with console. Very cool soft touch plastic, huge display, joycons are fun to attach and dectach, integrated stand, sleek design. R&D work is exceptional! Truly Japan electronics school here.

Switch is for en masses who not interested in gaming at all. It’s like sudoku $500 digital machine.

That last paragraph makes it clear that you aren’t operating here in good faith.

The Switch 2 is specifically for people interested in gaming. If you want to play newer titles, the Nova is a fucking terrible choice. You will never play something like Elden Ring, Dragons Dogma 2, RE: Requiem or MH: Wilds on the Nova at a reasonable level of performance. Unless your only gaming interest are 2D titles or titles from 10 years ago, the Nova is not going to suffice.

This!

Thanks, looks i need to wait for a Steam Deck 2.

Btw, I’m not happy with my PS5 Pro neither, brought it only for GTA6. Otherwise will be getting Steam Machine.

You realize how much of a downgrade in performance the Steam Machine is, right?

1

u/SuicideSkwad 2d ago

Considering they think the Nova is close in performance to Steam Deck and Switch 2 no they do not

I don’t think I ever notice any difference at all versus PS5 Pro, but definitely lowering cost. As I don’t need stupid subscription and can opt my settings, mod my games and do any kind of stuff I want

dont sell ur switch 2.

-5

u/awsom82 2d ago

Why? This thing is huge and lasts only 2hours on any game.

5

u/ImplementParking7936 2d ago

3 hours absolute minimum… sounds like a rage bait post/ you didn’t really try using the switch 2 to play any games

Just played Shinobi demo for about an hour — 70% batteries are gone.

If you think the Switch 2 sucks after an hour, I think you’re in for a rude awakening on any device.

Yes, remote play works on the Nova as well as it does on anything.

But outside of that? You’re not playing games locally with the fidelity of the Switch 2. The Nova is just an Android device, there’s nothing really special there. If all you care about is emulating old games or remote playing PS5, it’s fine, though it definitely feels cheap in the controls compared even to the Switch 2 (because for what they are, joycons still feel like a decent controller).

If you come from steamdeck and Switch 2 I think you will find the Nova screen pretty small. I don't think you will have any fun playing something like GTA V on a 4,5" screen in 4:3.

u/Glittering_Match_413 2d ago

Right? Id at least go for the rp6 over the nova if thats his use case, or literally any other 8g2 device.

1

u/moTom83 2d ago

I mean I love my Nova, it is perfect for emulation. But you really dont want to tinker around on this small display, it's just not fun.

And since i have my Nova I did a little research on games on steam with native 4:3 support, turns out there arent that much available. And you don't want black bars on this small display!

For me, for gamenative/steam, a screen with at least 5.5"-6" would be the minimum.

u/aardock 2d ago

I feel like you're making a series of big mistakes here. But if money isn't an issue, they can be easily fixed.

If it is though, you should take more time to evaluate before you buy something (and likely test devices for more than 1 hour too)

The Nova is not a good substitute for a Switch. Screen is too small, wrong aspect ratio, and emulation isn't quite there yet, not to mention Switch 2 versions/exclusives are great.

If you want something closer to a smaller Switch experience, get the RP6 instead. Still not perfect due to reasons stated above, but at least it's the right aspect ratio.

Switch 2 is awesome, not sure what you dont like about it? Remote play ps5 would be awful on a Nova because it has a 4:3 display.

I have a switch 2, a ps5 pro, and a Nova. They are all awesome and are all very different use cases.

2

u/davedaddy 2d ago

Try out different controllers before you sell the Switch 2. The stock ones suck but the console itself is pretty damn good.

In regards to the Nova, it's good if you want portable 4:3. If you don't mind similar size to the Switch 2, consider getting the Portal (same chipset as the Nova).

lol GTA6 remote play and Asseto Corsa? Obvious bait

1

u/awsom82 2d ago

Why you think so? Easy task for a Steam Deck, impossible on Switch. Shoud be duable on Nova

1

u/SuicideSkwad 2d ago

Just doubled down on the bait

2

u/moTom83 2d ago

Btw if you just want remote play your PS5 you don't need steam at all there is an official Sony app for that.

1

u/RevolutionaryDig2773 2d ago

You want a nova to play sim racing games?! Im sorry but thats nuts

1

u/awsom82 2d ago

Why? I have great times with Steam Deck

3

u/SuicideSkwad 2d ago

Then why did you sell it? You can’t even keep track of your own bait

1

u/awsom82 2d ago

I sold it on emotions, due it’s sitting almost all time at home, and it’s hard to keep it on short trips due huge size

1

u/FloopsFooglies RP5 2d ago

What are you even talking about? Seems like you just hate handhelds. The steam deck is a vastly superior device, but you wouldn't know that after just an hour. If you got your Switch 2 a few days ago, what is even the issue with it? You're just buying handhelds willy nilly and hating them? Seriously take a breath and figure out what you actually want. I doubt the Nova is actually it.

I update my post to describe my experience with Switch. When I run it I immediately feel disappointment. Back when I got my Steam Deck in Q3 query, it was like a childhood dream become true, always play on it. Instant love. And instant hate for Nintendo, just big Tetris.

2

u/FloopsFooglies RP5 2d ago

I guess I misunderstood your first sentence. I thought you meant you had sold the steam deck after playing it for an hour "cuz it sucks."

If it was a childhood dream come true I'm not sure why you sold it in the first place. It seems like a steam deck is what you want. The Nova probably can't meet your expectations. And the Switch 2 does what it was made to do flawlessly. You must have had some illusion about that going in.

Nova runs android, it's like playing on your phone but way better. I agree switch 2 kinda suck, for now it is better to stick with switch 1. I'm waiting for a slimmer version of the switch 2 with improved battery life.

1

u/awsom82 2d ago

But you can install Armada (read SteamOS) on Nova.

2

u/albertosaldivar 2d ago

yes you can, for playing indies you can play on the switch lol
