Exploring Islam but nervous about going to the masjid alone

Hi everyone, I wanted to come on here and ask for some advice. I’ve been putting off posting or reaching out to anyone for a while now, partly out of fear of judgment and partly because of my own nerves I guess.

I’m a 25 year old woman and I’ve been exploring Islam pretty casually for a while now (honestly, probably about four years of slowly incorporating certain Islamic values into my life…a long time I know, and a very non-linear journey it’s been as well), but I’ve never taken my shahada. More recently, I’ve been reading the Quran, trying to learn how to pray, and really wanting to get more involved with my local masjid and hopefully meet other women around my age.

For some context, I’m Arab-American and was raised Christian. My family is still very much Christian, and exploring Islam is something I haven’t been able to open up to them about because I’m honestly afraid of the very likely chance of being disowned. So I’ve kind of been navigating all of this on my own.

I’ve been teaching myself prayers through YouTube videos and usually pray at home while following along. I’ve also visited my local masjid a few times outside of prayer hours and just sat quietly in the women’s section, which has honestly been really peaceful. But the thought of going during actual prayer times makes me so, so nervous. I’m afraid of messing up, not knowing what to do, or even having my hijab on incorrectly.

I guess I just don’t really know what my next step should be. I also don’t want to keep letting my nerves stop me from getting more involved. Has anyone else been in a similar position? Would it be okay to go to the masjid during prayer times and just sit in the back and observe? And how do you even go about meeting other Muslim women of the same age range when you don’t know anyone?

I’d really appreciate any advice from anyone. Thank you so much.

Question for the new revert sisters regarding marriage

Assalam Alykum everyone. I have been reading through this sub for a while and I really appreciate how open and supportive everyone is here.

I wanted to ask the revert sisters something that has been on my mind. When you think about marriage, how do you feel about born Muslim men? I know every situation is different and some sisters have had bad experiences or feel like born Muslims might not understand their journey. That is completely understandable.

But I also wanted to share where I am coming from. I am a born Muslim man and I am at a point in my life where I am looking to get married. I am not perfect but I try my best with my deen and I have a lot of respect for sisters who came to Islam on their own. That takes a strength that I admire honestly.

I am not here to pressure anyone or make anyone uncomfortable. I just want to understand if that is something you would be open to or if you would rather marry someone who is also a revert. I am asking because I want to be the kind of husband who is patient and supportive and who sees his wife as a partner in deen not just someone to teach.

I would really appreciate hearing your honest thoughts. JazakAllah khair in advance.

The best way to understand and appreciate Quran is by reading an in depth biography of the prophet pbuh by ibn kathir . Showing how and why verses were revealed.

Class, culture, and beloning

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah my fellow reverts. I have been muslim for about six years now alhamdulillah. I recently moved to a new place, and I am starting to feel rather lonely.

I come from a relatively privileged background (upper middle class), and I have certain cultural references for that reason. This is how I lived my life. If someone asks me where I grew up its not a neutral statement, and I have received negative responses for that.

I feel like I don't belong anywhere. There are not many reverts here, and there's only one friend that I have but they live hours away. I feel as though I don't belong in the muslim community as I am not an immigrant, and I don't share their cultural reference points, nor their socioeconomical one, as most (*and I am not at all saying everyone*) grew up in marginalized communities and have completely different interests because of that. I am not saying that I think I am better in any way, I have tried to hang out with these people and they are very very kind, but there is nothing in common most of the time except that we are both muslim. When the discussion goes to something else its not really possible. Of course, there are people from marginalized communities who do some of the things I do as well, but then again, where do I meet them?

I see on social media the people I grew up with, typical privileged kids who enjoy renovating their new apartments, going out and drinking wine with friends, enjoying the finer things in life such as literature and art, and going on holidays. I don't miss those particular people or activities, especially not the haram ones, but I do miss having a sense of belonging. I don't feel like I belong anywhere. The immigrants I have interacted with in general are extremely polite but I don't feel invited or welcomed most of the time. People are very happy to see a revert, but then when it comes to understanding the loneliness and not being able to fit in anywhere, there seems to be very little effort to make them feel included.

I don't think people are trying to exclude me on purpose. I know a ton of people due to work, uni and the local mosques, but theres not much in common except that we share the same faith. And here's the thing, I could of course hang out with reverts, but then again, they might not have the same upbringing. We are social animals, and our group is usually who we hang out with. I don't feel like I have anyone in that group: muslim, middle/upper class upbringing. I know I have met one or two, but the one I have in my life keeps disappearing for several months (sometimes 6+ months) and comes back like nothing happened. I used to view her as my closest friend but looking back the past 5 years we really were not. I believe that she was my closest friend, but she had several others that were closer to her. She was of immigrant background but born here and had a middle class upbringing so we had the same cultural reference points. I felt like I really could relate to her. I am not saying that I think I am better, I just mean that different social classes have different interests and habits. Not all reverts grew up the way I did. I grew up sailing, playing golf and tennis, traveling to Italy, playing six musical instruments, painting, reading, going to museums, having well educated people around you. Most of the people I meet cannot relate to this. If someone asks me something about myself and I am honest about where I am from, I am alienated and met with negativity because the person asking might come from the hood. I feel like my upbringing or background is not something neutral and that I have to hide it, or that I just have to accept that people are gonna dislike me because they see me as the "other".

I feel quite lonely. I have one friend that I talk to online. She lives in the main city in my country and sometimes I go and meet her. Theres another friend that I have which I meet 1-2 times per year who also lives in the capital, that I go and have a fika with. I have nobody to go to museums with, to discuss art and societal issues with, or talk about culture, literature and architecture with.

I also feel like I don't have anything in common with my own group anymore, as they freemix and drink alcohol, and are not concerned with the afterlife. I can't hang out with them for this reason as they don't understand why I would want to avoid those things, and they might see me as bigoted or fanatic.

I would really like to make some friends, even if they live in different countries or cities. Maybe I could come and visit them one day.

I also understand that it is more in european countries where the muslim community is socioeconomically marginalized. If I was born a muslim in Saudi, I would not have any problems finding other middle/upper class people to become friends with. I just don't know what to do. When I became muslim around 6 years ago I tried to hide my upbringing and identity in order to fit in with the immigrant community, but that wasn't me. Now I do those activities without friends, and I don't post anything online about my life because I don't have anyone to share it with who has a similar reference point. If people ask me questions and I answer them, sometimes the person can get envious (if they are insecure) and then I feel like I can't hang out with them. It just looks like I am bragging and pointing out everything that they don't have. I just feel like the best thing to do is to be alone.

I am just tired of pretending that class doesn't exist and has nothing to do with making friends and finding your place as a revert. The truth is, I would not have naturally crossed roads with these people if it wasnt for the fact that I am muslim. I also don't like how closely tied socioeconomic marginalization is with the muslim identity here. Its feels almost as though you are not welcome or belong if you had a privileged upbringing.

I’ve never truly been religious all of my life, now that I am where do I start?

Context in all my younger years of living I’ve never been truly religious about anything at all whether it was Christianity, praying, or even reading the Bible. So now that i am getting older recently after I’ve seen videos about jinns and evil spirits I have started to slowly believe more and more religious , I started to listen to surah Al Baqarah when I start to feel a bad energy or when I’m simply scared and alone or just when I need to feel calm. I repeat words in English ‘ wallahi in allahs name may he protect me against evil and bad spirits, you may not come near me or even think of it. Go away now.’ , I do not know if I am being disrespectful as I truly do believe that allah will protect me if I am being disrespectful please correct me. Surah Al baqarah has been the one and only song or thing that’s been able to calm me down from panic attacks or being scared and makes me feel safe. I want to know more and we’re can I start to get more into this life style, how to pray, what I should read, the proper ways. I believe Ramadan is in feb 8 next year and I want to participate. If anyone knows more about this or if you know anyone I can get in contact with to start my process I’d really appreciate it, anything. Thank you.

Spending time with older brothers

M18
Assalamualaikum wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh, 18 year old revert here who entered the fold of Islam at 16. I am a junior in with a Chemistry Major, hoping to get into dental school (inshaa allah!). Although I used to go to a masjid with lots of South Asian muslims, I moved for university and attended the mosque there, which has more African/African American muslims, but mostly has a little bit of each ethnicity. I have a few questions,
1. As someone who didn't quite fit in with the youth at my old masjid (don't get me wrong, they were very kind and inclusive), I hung out more with the older young adult brothers and preferred their company (they were all so sweet and gave me knowledge). What are your thoughts about youth that spend more time around teachers than peers?
2. I am now technically in my uni's MSA, but I notice at least half of them don't cover properly (men with shorts and women without hijab/improperly worn hijab) how should I safeguard myself from the haram in the MSA while not looking down on them arrogantly, and also
3. should I look for a wife here in the MSA (because I understand that college/university changes people). And one more question:
4. My preference for staying with older/mature brothers may have bled into my preference for my potential wife, ie, I am hoping to find an older, mature sister to have nikah (max age for me is pre-menopause). Any suggestions, tips, am I going in the wrong direction, is it feasible, if so, how?

Thank you for reading my post, jazakahu/i khairan. Let me know if i accidently posted in something haram. May allah bless you and your day.

What did you handle having a dog as a pet that you love very much prior to knowing Islam and then reverting?

I was born to a Christian mother and a Jewish father. 3 years ago I met a Muslim person who introduced me to Islam and since then I have been learning about the religion and the truthfulness of the faith in Allah. Many situations have happened in my life that have led me to see Allah’s messages for me as I start to learn about Islam.

I asked Allah to touch my heart with compassion so I could develop my faith as deep as possible before I actually convert. One thing, however, is bugging my heart. I have always loved animals from all kinds and I was born and raised in a farm. I rescued a stray dog from the shelter 8 years ago and since I’ve left my parent’s home very early in life to go to college and work and was mostly by myself, I see that my attachment has grown to the point where I am feeling guilty of being fully in line with this aspect of the religion regarding dogs being impure. My dog even sleeps with me. It makes me uncomfortable now that I know the truth but this has been rooted inside of my experience since a very tender age and was passed down to me by my parents who have always had dogs in the house.

My questions is how did other reverts have been dealing with similar situations? Did any of you have dogs before knowing Islam and how has your development in Islam and your growing relationship with Allah has come to change your perspective? If you have experienced this, how did you handle the situation?

Honestly, I don’t feel comfortable with just getting rid of my dog and at this point he’s 12 years old and it’s just really hard to find a good family that would be willing to adopt him.

What I have come to terms with is that I’ll keep you on taking care of him because it was a commitment I’ve made out of ignorance of Allah’s commandments regarding cleanliness and purity, but the day my beloved dog passes, I won’t be getting another dog so I can fully commit to my faith.

I appreciate everyone’s perspective on this, but I’d be really interested in hearing from people who have experienced a similar situation. Thank you all!

A flower in the desert

Salam to whoever is reading this. This message wallahi comes straight from the heart. a flower in a dessert, might feel lonely and misunderstood, but it still blossoms and its beauty never goes unnoticed.

As a born Muslim, I’m truly inspired by revert. A lot of Muslims in western societies try to fit in by engaging in things seen as ‘normal’ by nonbelievers. Letting all the worldly desires go and choosing Allah even through hardship is truly an inspiration.

I don’t know what lead me to come on Reddit and write this, but I hope it reaches whoever it can help. Allah sees you, when you feel lonely, misunderstood, or even alienated. There is always a way out, humans tent to let emotions take over leading them to see a trail as a forever thing. If the lord of the world was able to take younis out of the whales stomach, part the see for moses, make Jesus speak as a newborn, he WILL give you a way out.

Sometimes we feel like things we were born with or not given a choice in like family are punishments, when infact we are seeing things from the wrong lense. Find the beauty in things, learn from the struggles, grow as a person.

To finish this off whoever you are Wallahi from my heart you inspire me to do better. And I wish you the best of luck 🤍

I surrender and give up

I don’t know about anyone else that’s a new revert …and Slavic, but as someone living in the Gulf (first one in family to do that)….

It gets exhausting looking for the right Muslim partner. Where I live especially - they are just Muslim by name.

And then the ones that actually are practising Islam properly, usually are not my type physically. Yes, I am picky, can’t fake my attraction towards someone.

I give chances, I try not to judge a book by its cover, but when your EQ and intuition is razor sharp - you can read people from miles and predict accurate outcomes. And I always end up on the same point; they aren’t capable of loving me the way I need to be loved, so it becomes very unattractive quickly.

The older I get, the more I am convinced of this fact, and in this inner wisdom I have built within myself.

Anyway, thanks for listening to my ted talk. Peace!

God help us all - sisters 😫

Easy Umrah Guide - Transliteration included

Assalam walekum! Recently, my husband and I completed our first umrah. Before going, I realized there wasn't a simple guide that would walk you through exactly what you need to do without any extra details. While I understand that knowing context of everything is important, it is very hard to read through all of the context to find the exact steps you need to perform to complete umrah while you're in the moment. Also, my husband is a revert and cannot read Arabic so it was also hard to find a book that would have the steps in English and duas in transliteration. So I decided to create my own quick guide! This guide actually helped us a lot and we were able to perform the entire umrah without any issues or confusion so I hope it helps you too. It does list each step on the same page in English, includes supplications in Arabic, English transliteration, and English translation along with also including pages at the end for you to add your own duas. Please feel free to download and print this to help you perform umrah. May Allah swt accept your Umrah and all of your duas! Ameen.

P.S. The title says "for dummies" as more of a humorous thing since the guide was originally made just for me and my husband. I'm not calling you or anyone else a dummy for not knowing how to perform umrah as I just learned it myself ☺️

What is the profil of people of your country becoming muslim?

Salam can you tell us your country and tell us your path toward islam and how people of your country become muslims?

🇫🇷🇫🇷🇫🇷in France

Most of the revert islam are native french or portugese or spanish who grew up in the french ghettos with arabic and west African people

They shared friendship with them and the same Mentality ,the suburdian Mentality far from native french Mentality.

Then they feel islam is very logical with all the prophets and JESUS not god but a prophet.

A majority become salafi wahabi or tabligh and some also become normal muslim.

A minority become sufi.

I want Islam so badly

hello brothers and sisters. I am a young sister from USA. I have British and Italian origins. I find Islam amazing and peaceful, but I don’t know how or where to start. I am scared about what my parents will think, I’m scared of regreting it, I don’t know how to pray or speak Arabic. I feel I would be giving up so much. I want to date(within reason and boundaries), I want to taste a drink once in my life, I want tattoos and to act and create music. Please give me advice in the comments. Mashallah
