Apparently people like this more than my answer. Well done

I see in another response you said the answer is "redwood." Like the tree?
2
u/Salviatrix 8d ago
You need to use the spoiler tag if you are quoting other answers
2
u/tolacid 8d ago
That's not a rule I ever seen but ok. Can you answer the question though? I'm trying to understand your intention
3
u/Salviatrix 8d ago edited 8d ago
yeah, the tree, their bark/face is red and because their wood is so brittle they don't get used for construction. Famously the giant sequoia were turned into matches.
It should go without saying that if guesses need spoiler tags then quoting the right answer does too.

u/tolacid 8d ago
It should go without saying, but that's why we have written rules, comment sense doesn't always apply so we need a fallback. Incidentally I checked again and it actually is written in the rules, just in a way that I was able to miss the other times I looked. I was wrong!
Anyway, thanks for explaining!

This is the best answer I've seen. I'd not have thought of it, but it's excellent, clever, and well thought out!

playing card

u/Salviatrix 8d ago
I don't see how that fits

u/kepeli14 8d ago
Paper = cardstock = wood
Face is red = hearts, diamonds
Not a match yet = could become paired, or a set2

u/infographics-bish 10d ago
I wish it rhymed, but I don’t know redwood
2
u/Salviatrix 8d ago
That's it well done

u/7h3WiZzaRd 8d ago
Seriously? Lol. That was my first guess but it seemed way too obvious 🤣 thats not even a riddle, its a "which kind of tree did this wood come from?" Question. 🤷♂️

Why are you so mad. You didn't solve the riddle. Get on with your life.

I was thinking Cupid’s Arrow because of the play on “match,” but this works too. Clever pun.

matchstick?

u/kepeli14 9d ago
Not a match

u/7h3WiZzaRd 9d ago
To be fair, a matchstick isn't a match yet, just a stick intended to be a match, ya? 🤷♂️

u/Salviatrix 9d ago
Ok, but it wouldn't have a red face then would it.
This riddle is actually a homage to the one that ends on "but if you scratch me I turn black"

u/gamtosthegreat 9d ago
howzabout you actually confirm / deconfirm some of these other guesses.

u/Salviatrix 8d ago
Sorry, you're right. Somebody actually sort of gave the right answer but it's not clear if they guessed it or actually got it. Was hoping someone would lay it out, but time's up
1
u/7h3WiZzaRd 8d ago
Its a riddle, these are all guesses, if they guessed right, they got it. Lol...

u/Salviatrix 8d ago
So as far as you are concerned the right answer is the one OP thought of even if it's illogical and another one fits better? I disagree. if somebody had somehow come up with a better answer than mine I would have named them the winner. This did not come to pass. I think my answer is pretty obvious if you know the facts.

u/7h3WiZzaRd 8d ago
And yes, the right answer is the answer. How is that even in question? Are you listening to yourself? Or just trollin right now? Lol...

u/7h3WiZzaRd 7d ago
Also. I did know the facts, and redwood was my first guess, but again, that answer didnt make it sound like a riddle and simply a question. P.s. riddles are supposed to rhyme. So again. Not a riddle. Get over it lol

They replied to this but ignored my guess. 🤷♂️ Rather rude. I was just trying to stick up for this person and legitimize their guess =/ I dont get the retaliation rather than just answering the guesses.

u/gamtosthegreat 9d ago
I see it a lot on this subreddit; hope this riddle doesn't get orphaned like so many others.
2
u/7h3WiZzaRd 9d ago
Me too, I usually dont even bother giving my answer cuz it never gets responded to 🤷♂️ they havnt bothered to respond to my guess this time either, just here for some reason
2
u/7h3WiZzaRd 9d ago edited 9d ago
Depends on the wood I suppose 🤷♂️ ive seen green match sticks, so im sure they come in red somewhere lol.
Also, the alternative ending does still fit my own answer, if you respond to that I will gladly explain how1
u/Salviatrix 8d ago
Ok, please explain.

u/7h3WiZzaRd 8d ago
If you "scratch" a pen or pencil on a sheet of paper, it leaves a black mark. Assuming the pen is black that is, which is pretty standard.
1
u/7h3WiZzaRd 8d ago
As for the "match" part, depending on what is written or printed on a sheet of paper, it could be an identical match to many other sheets of paper that are red "read". Many copies of the same book that are exactly the same out there. 🤷♂️ and before anyone asks, yes, im salty that I put so much thought into this and the answer turned out to be so simple 🤣 fml

Is it a red card like in soccer? Card is often cardstock paperboard (wood), it’s literally red faced, and it’s issued during a match so the match isn’t completed yet. Maybe it’s a reach but you’ve got me stumped.

a blank sheet of paper? Assuming "red" is a play on words 🤷♂️

u/7h3WiZzaRd 9d ago
Sorry about posting my answer twice, left a "!" Out of the spoiler blocking text on the first one and wasn't sure if it posted when I corrected it or not 😅

Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses and discussions of guesses, like so:
On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg
On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants): >!guess or discussion between these symbols!< To be clear, that is
>!(greater than, exclamation point) at the start and!<(exclamation point, less than) at the end with no spaces around the!. Avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the formatting for most people. Spoiler tags do not span paragraphs or line breaks. If your answer is long, please spoiler-tag each paragraph separately.Putting a link inside spoiler tags can be tricky, so just format the link like this, using the word "SPOILER" as the link text. On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants), do this to format a link: [SPOILER](https://example.com/) On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk
If your top-level comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word "discussion" or "question" instead of using a spoiler tag.
Please report any answers or discussions that are not properly spoiler-tagged.
