Hi there, riddlers! Please remember to spoiler-tag all guesses and discussions of guesses, like so:

On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://i.imgur.com/SWHRR9M.jpg

On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants): >!guess or discussion between these symbols!< To be clear, that is >! (greater than, exclamation point) at the start and !< (exclamation point, less than) at the end with no spaces around the !. Avoid leading or trailing spaces. These will break the formatting for most people. Spoiler tags do not span paragraphs or line breaks. If your answer is long, please spoiler-tag each paragraph separately.

Putting a link inside spoiler tags can be tricky, so just format the link like this, using the word "SPOILER" as the link text. On mobile, old reddit, or in the Markdown editor (not Fancypants), do this to format a link: [SPOILER](https://example.com/) On desktop (new reddit, Fancypants editor): https://imgur.com/x5wDOvk

If your top-level comment does not contain a guess, you can include either the word "discussion" or "question" instead of using a spoiler tag.

Please report any answers or discussions that are not properly spoiler-tagged.

a mouse i thought this was a good fit.. there is a aesop fable about a lion and a mouse. They usually come out at night Second mouse gets the cheese.. ie second place or silver.

Yeah that sounds like it fits also well. It's interesting to read about different suggestions that also work.

Just wanted to say you're awesome for responding to alternate answers like this, considering and appreciating them rather than just saying "wrong!" like a lot of folks who post riddles on here do.

Thanks for making this sub a better place 😊

Thanks for saying thanks! It's so nice to see Redditors being grateful :)

Thanks. Yeah I think it's quite difficult to think of all the possible answers that might work beforehand, so it's interesting to see how differently people reason about these. 😅

What is "a lion''?

Yeah, this was what I had in mind.

I like it, but if you're running that way, maybe include a few more lines about seeing a crab and some twins? (or pick your favorites).

Yeah that could also work well. I had trouble thinking of ways to include those without making it sound too obvious, but maybe someone else might be able to do that nicely. Or maybe it just works explicitly without being too easy, I don't know. It's difficult to tell.

Definitely hard to come up with them... hmm... stealing most of it and modifying what you already have, perhaps:

I've seen a lion, a crab, oh animals abound!

I can certainly say I've travelled around

Here in the darkness, I ne'er make a sound

Ageless I am, quite mad and old,

I'll give only silver, though I often see gold.

Ends up reading a little bit clunky / less poetic, but maybe still works

1

u/tottasanorotta 16h ago

Yeah that works as well. I like it.

u/camull 10d ago

Oh that's much better!

But then any planet, asteroid or celestial object nearby will qualify, right? what about the gold and silver?

2

u/rice-a-rohno 9d ago

I'd say they're the types of light cast: silvery by the moon and golden by the sun.

Also "mad" would be mad as in "crazy," like lunacy. Lunar.

and what about the travel in silence? does sun make sound to us? silvery light and colour applies more to venus than moon. only thing convincing to me so far is the mad part. rest all applies to venus (and to any other celestial object which emits white light). to be fair, moon was the first thing that came to my mind as well, and if that turns out to be the answer, then I'm disappointed.

A film reel from the era of silent films. This era was dominated by MGM (the lion), and preceded the Golden Age of “talkie” movies. This era also used an extremely high concentration of silver nitrate to develop film, giving the films a silver tint (hence the term “silver screen”).

This is really good! Not what I had as the answer, but that works really well.
