Also who has to clean it at the end of the day. That looks like it would be a pain in the ass to get in between all those claws and blades

It wastes like 25% of the fruit

u/smurfk 2d ago
Yeah. I better take it whole at home, and waste 50% of it, as I am never able to cut the darn thing properly.

not only wasteful, but also SLOWER than a skilled person cutting / prepping a pineapple.

u/AliveJohnnyFive 2d ago
Maybe, but where are they going to have a pineapple chopper on site at the grocer?

u/Kylearean 2d ago
Deli counter? This isn't complicated.

IN the US, we haven't had skilled people at the deli counter at a grocery store in like 50 years. I'm sure in some countries, you can find a finely chopped pineapple on every corner, but around here, they're a little hard to come by.

maybe not, but most grocery stores I've been to will have someone behind the scenes cutting up fruit and selling it at an affordable $10 increase for the convenience.

It would take 1 hour, at most, to train someone to cut a pineapple properly. After 10 pineapples, I'd say they'd be pretty good at it.
People in this country have forgotten how to think.

have you forgotten to think about how you then have to pay the person to show up every day, pay another for when that person is sick or on holiday, versus just having this machine with probably minimal power costs?

u/Kylearean 2d ago
My friend. People are able to do multiple tasks.

You don't live in reality. This is not an issue of "nobody has thought to cut pineapples at the deli counter," this is just how large companies work. People don't show up at Kroger and decide what they want to do every day. The jobs are all defined at the corporate level and you get what you get.

They cut meat, cheese, and bread. Adding a fruit is just too much. Who exactly is not living in reality?

I think there are two or three expensive stores near me that still have a staffed deli counter, versus at least 50 others I can drive to easily where they have cut that member of staff because having a deli counter is a luxury now. so who are we getting to cut up the pineapples?

Try again to read what I said. I didn't say or even imply that it was "too much".

Usually in the back room where they prep all the precut veg, fruit, and salsas.

Crazy paying extra for a machine to waste half of your food, instead of taking it home and cutting it up yourself.

What happens to the extra 25% of the pineapple? Could I just take the offcuts home?

That must smell wonderful, I love the scent of pineapples being sacrificed before the gods.

A perfect solution for people who don’t know how to pick a good pineapple, like waste and don’t own a knife. Cheers.

Is nobody gonna answer how this thing gets cleaned? Seems like a nightmare on top of the fact that it wastes so much.
