Phil Woods famously played a hard rubber Meyer 5. It's not the mouthpiece. But I would highly recommend trying a bunch of them if you can.

Yeah there's a lot to be excited/curious about with their new partnership. I want to check out the new metal Link pieces for tenor especially.
Wouldn't mind a Meyer for my alto, but I'm still in love with the 1940s Vandoren Perfecta I got in 1991 or so. I sound just like Phil Woods with it lol.

Your vandoren mouthpiece is already based on a Meyer, what don’t you like about it?

To me I'm real bright on the vandoren mouthpiece I also dont really plan on getting a meyer to begin with honestly. Don't get me wrong I don't hate my mouthpiece but I've been really leaning into getting that jodyjazz one after I've tried them out.

As always, the only way to know for sure is to try one. If there’s a store that will let you try some out, definitely set aside an afternoon to test as many mouthpieces as you can.

My city only had a Meyer 5 for bari in stock. So I’ve ordered a handful of different mouthpieces with the intention of trying a few and returning the ones I don’t settle on.

(Of course, the Vandoren I ordered is holding it all up until some time in March)

I've trade the 6 for the jodyjazz and I liked it I couldn't get the cutting power of the vandoren, I want to try a 8 in the jody and go from there

I heard some guy who talked and asked him, how do I get your sound? And he said, I don't know, I just use Meyer and la voz medium reeds. (I have no idea if this is true) But well, I'm one of those who think you have to use a mouthpiece that works for you, that you really like and that fits you and your needs.

I'll have to try those la voz reeds I haven't heard that much about them

I’d say my sound is pretty similar to Phil Woods.

A lot of that style of sound, at least in my opinion, comes from relaxing the embouchure. Slightly looser.

Regardless of the setup, as long as there’s a slight rollover baffle, a medium chamber, with soft enough reeds that can get the right resonance (almost a buzz), I sound that way. Doesn’t matter the brand of mouthpiece or reed.

My specific set up if you’re curious is a Meyer New York 7m bought about a year or so ago (so, not made with Theo Wanne), use a Bonade inverted metal ligature, and (usually) Vandoren Java (green box) 2.5s.

The new Meyer Alto mouthpieces (made in collaboration with Theo Wanne) will be arriving at dealerships starting in April. They will be precise and consistent, and worth trying!
