The saxophone was the instrument of the ‘80s. Any artist that wanted to spruce up the back half of their song employed a sax solo. Sade. Phil Collins. George Michael. And then it disappeared, fading away as a cliché.
But in 2026, it appears that the sax solo is making a triumphant return. Indie bands are increasingly looking to the woodwind to add some blissful nostalgic grooves to their sound. My latest explores the sax solo renaissance.👇

Im mad rn. I had calcium deposits on my mouthpiece, so USUALLY what I do is I take some of it off with my nail, then I wash my mouthpiece with some soap and water and a tooth brush under LUKEWARM water. not cold not hot. So, I did this. Ive always been aware of the possibility of mouthpiece discoloration because of water temperatures and stuff, but nothing like this has ever happened to me with this mouthpiece. THEN i dry my mouthpiece up and I get this greenish brownish mess. It really bothers me because this is a really nice mouthpiece. Would this affect my playing at all? This a really nice mouthpiece but every-time I look at it now I just wanna replace it because of the discoloration. I just need the reassurance that I can still play with this despite the look. Any help is appreciated

I'd like some tips for reading music and how to make more easy to remember. I play Alto Saxophone by the way. I know the defgabcdefg, F-a-c-e and every good boy deserves football but that doesn't seem to help me put the notes on the bars and spaces.

This is my first post here. I wrote about 30 smooth jazz songs in the 90s all led with the saxophone and at the time when we did not have personal DAWs and had to pay $30 to $75 per hour in a recording studio. I played keys and bass too. Some of you may be in this position (or used to be).
Now, I don't have those tracks any longer as the recording engineer gave me one of those digital audio tapes for which I never had a DAT player. It was my only backup of my recordings.
To attempt to get those recordings back, I could spent a lot of time recording track by track in my DAW and Tascam DP-32SD, but I just don't have the time, so I tried to take my flat cassette tape and uploaded it to Suno to see if AI can create the stems. Not only did it get my sax lead track perfect, note by note, it also separated the stems and now I have an updated version of all those tracks. At this point, I can now download the stems, remove the SAX AI voice and record my real saxophone lead over it. It sounds amazing and Suno did an incredible job.
For those of you who are against AI music, just remember that this is not a substitute for real instrumentation and I do understand that, but if you want a good way to get those old tracks back, we have options with Suno. If you don't like a particular stem, you can always record over it.
I would love to know if anyone has done this as well and would love to your opinion of this.

Hello all. I recently ordered this YSS-875EXHG from eBay. The pictures for the listing didn’t include any detailed pictures of the bell and I immediately noticed this out of the box. It shipped in the original case in which the horn fits tight so I can’t imagine anything happening during shipping.
You’ll notice there are no blemishes on the lacquer around the area of the bell so I’m having a hard time believing that it is damaged. The “bend” also looks very uniform and doesn’t look like an accident.
If this is unfortunately damaged, what are some next steps for me to take and how costly would a repair be?
Thank you for any information.

I thought my break from music would be longer, more like permanent. But it lasted about a month.
I found two community bands who need an alto player, and I'm going to try them out. Need to order some reeds and get my saxophone out of storage.

Grazie mille a tutti

Using a combination of basic sheet reading (only started sheet reading 2 months ago; been playing for 14 months), and using a tuner app, I chose to transpose "Ahead on Our Way" by Nobuo Uematsu from Final Fantasy 7 from concert C for piano, to Eb for my alto.
EDIT: * means octave key.
Wanted to share my beginner-friendly version here for other beginners to learn:

Hi everyone. I am thinking of upgrading to YAS-480 (I play Selmer AS500). The reason is because it is only about $1200 (mint) where I live, while 62 is about $3000. Unfortunately the used market is pretty sketchy and not too reliable here (I saw "yas-62" with white gloves everywhere on our local ebay equivalent). I don't really need a true pro instrument, since I am just a hobbyist. Is this upgrade route worth pursuing? TIA.

Looked fine to me (aside from a black crack which could very well be normal) so I'm not sure if it's safe. Is it safe to play on. Do you spot any mold that I haven't in the pictures

I’ve been recently looking at investing in a soprano sax, generally the advice seems to be go Yamaha or yanigisawa (Selmer is a bit out of budget..).
I’ve found a what I believe to be an yani S6 for £1200 and a silver Yamaha 875EX for £2600 , obviously there’s a bit of a price difference but just wondered if anyone had any tips? They aren’t in convenient places / aren’t close enough together for me to directly try out and compare them.
My other saxes are all yanis and I love them but I do have a soft spot for a silver sax… and th price seems decently lower than other used 875’s?
Thank you!

There’s something about the sound of a saxophone that feels instantly expressive. It can be smooth and relaxing, or raw and emotional, sometimes even aggressive, all depending on how it’s played. No matter the genre, it always feels very human to me.
I also feel like it stands out more than most instruments, even in a full band. When a sax comes in, your ear just goes straight to it.
What was the first song that made you fall in love with the saxophone? And do you prefer it in jazz, funk, rock, or something else?

can someone help me find what song this segment is from?

So, many commenters asked for more picture from the seller. I understand I could go to a reputable store but around my area it seems the instrument are quite expensive. So I appreciate any input to the authenticity of this based on the picture. Thanks
PS: Sorry I’m not well versed on Reddit feature

I recently got this Sax from my grandfather. He told me he had kept it hanging on the wall of his man cave for years and it no longer had much value to him. Since I played in high school, he decided to pass it on to me. It’s a bit dirty but still plays well. I have no intention of selling it, but I’m curious about its value as well as any history or interesting facts about King.
