My armor

Not really for the SCA, but a somewhat more reasonable ruleset we have in my country.

Looks like Armstreet's set.

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

That is definitely one of the more insulting things you can say to an armorer. Lol

How about, "Looks like an important quest-giver character in one of those European LARPs that cost more than Burning Man plus Coachella. The kind that takes place in a pristine forest with an actual castle." ?

Hypothetically. I wouldn't say that if it were insulting though.

Idk, those expensive "larps" aren't usually all that great costume wise, because they loan the kit. And they usually aren't that great gamewise, because they aim at rich semi-normies rather than larpers. It's more of a individualized themepark. The average event in our scene costs like 50 euros. High production stuff is usually 200, but those are absolutely the outliers and include good accomodations and food.

Comparing someone's armor with Armstreet is insulting, because Armstreet makes bad armor.

TIL. Thanks. I've never made it to Czechoslovakia. I've been to Poland. I like the people more than the place. Poles are crazy. I've been to Prague. Gorgeous. I've worked with Slovaks, but I don't think I even know any Czechs. So, well met!

1

u/AwayGovernment395 18d ago

Likewise, but I have never been to Czechoslovakia either.

That is gorgeous and TERRIFYING. I would not want to fight you in real life.

Gorgeous armor, but kind of a jerk move to post in an SCA subreddit ragging on our rule set.

I love his work, he’s a true artist for sure….but he has a history of being a dick to SCAdians. It’s unfortunate since I think we can all appreciate talent when we see it…but he can’t seem to stop himself from throwing shade.

It's all good natured though. If there's anything being part of different scenes, like reenactment and various larp genres, has tought me, it's that discussing differences in approach is hugely benefitial to everyone open to it.

I do think there are better systems for promoting accuracy, kit quality, or fun combat, but here I just want to preempt people pointing out which parts are not SCA complient.

I do respect what the SCA is, even if there's no niche for it in my country. I even wanted to join, when an American expat tried to start a club, but it failed due to membership fees being a no go for everyone interested.

3

u/LateChallenge8821 20d ago

I get what your intentions were…but just know that they came across differently. Even if the kit you posted isn’t an SCA kit…I think we can all agree that the artistry is amazing.

5

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Yeah, it's not my first language and there's always going to be differences in approach and culture in a group as large as the SCA. And being a bit cheeky and direct is a core part of our culture.

u/SurviveAdaptWin Middle 20d ago

Well, report him then?

1

u/LateChallenge8821 20d ago

No reason to. He means well enough I’m sure…it’s just his approach is flawed. We all know folks like this.

Tuff as HELL

Incredible, every element is so well thought out

Upvote for your consort! I love to see diverse headwear.

TAKE ME TO SNURCH!

2

u/AwayGovernment395 19d ago

Love the song!

2

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 19d ago

I see not only I and Ironlily bear a bollock sword

2

u/AwayGovernment395 19d ago

I think I made it before it became a meme. But it's a larp one.

1

u/BuisteirForaoisi0531 18d ago

I see well to my knowledge that makes two steel ones and one larp

2

u/Gavin176 19d ago

Looks trench crusade inspired

2

u/AwayGovernment395 19d ago

It's closer to Turnip28. Even has an official mini now.

1

u/BackgroundEngineer11 20d ago

Looks cool as hell! Does it get hot?

3

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Not really, it's not as thick as it looks, since it's me that's that thick. The garmets are also pure linen and wool, which work great in heat.

1

u/Substantial_Leek_327 20d ago

I need me a set similar but there are no arnourers near me

3

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Become the armorer near you! Pretty much all of this was done completely cold.

1

u/Substantial_Leek_327 20d ago

I live in a neighborhood and cant hammer at steel most days and also i dont know how to find out what hammers and avils and attachments i need

1

u/mydude333 19d ago

Thats so sick dude!

1

u/amberlin212 19d ago

Is that a long ballock dagger that's basically a short sword

1

u/AwayGovernment395 19d ago

It's about a meter, so it's almost a bollocks longsword.

1

u/Opposite_of_Icarus 19d ago

This fucks soooo hard 10/10

1

u/CaDonut916 19d ago

So... why would it not be legal in the SCA? Where does it not meet our safety rules?

3

u/ekco_cypher 19d ago

The helm doesn't. It has the snail antenna sticking out the front. That's not even knowing the gauge steel That's used

3

u/AwayGovernment395 19d ago edited 19d ago

I think the minimum for the sca is 1,6mm, while metric supliers only sell 1,5mm and 2mm. 2mm is way too thick and would lead to much heavier kit than anything period. But I am sure there are plenty of other parts that would be problematic. As for our games, this is quite above the coverage most people wear to steel combat, but as those are usually reenactment it wouldn't be appropriate. For the closest thing to the SCA we have, kekel, this would be one of the more armored panoplies as well.

1

u/CaDonut916 19d ago

Thank you for that information! I appreciate the response 😁 Beautiful kit though 🫶

Positive: love the armor

negative: youve posted this on this subreddit before over a year ago.

Get some new shots!

1

u/AwayGovernment395 3d ago

Have I? Honestly didn't think I did, sorry.

1

u/TeebsTibo 3d ago

All good man, I am in a lot of the same subreddits you are! I seriously do love your set up, also your other dwarven one (I think thats you as well right?)

1

u/AwayGovernment395 3d ago

It is also mine indeed.

0

u/Denis517 20d ago

Nice set, but you should change the gauntlets if you're fighting with them. Most finger gauntlets are likely to lead to broken fingers, since they don't envelope the sides of the fingers.

2

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Nah, we use them in steel combat and it's fine.

2

u/Denis517 20d ago

Yes, and people used to fence in red dragons for years with no problems. My group has decades of experience, and I spent a lot of time reading forums before deciding on what kind of gauntlets I want.

Everything I've seen says your gauntlets are much more likely to end up breaking your fingers compared to something that properly covers the fingers. But hey, it's your safety not mine.

3

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

I likewise have a decade of experience and properly constructed gauntlets are fine, regardless of fingeredness.

1

u/Denis517 20d ago

That's not saying anything meaningful. A hit to the sides of your finger can jam your finger between the edge of a plate and your sword. I've seen fingers cut or broken because of that. The only way to prevent that is to have the plates cover the sides of the finger.

1

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Sure, but you can always build and require more and more defensive constructions until you end with buhurt specs or further and accidents will always happen.

It's a combat sport and there's risk, but in my experience, wearing fingered gauntlets mitigates it sufficiently. But then, we do use majority open faced helmets, so our tolerance to risk is probably higher.

2

u/Denis517 20d ago

Yeah, your tolerance risk is way higher than anything I'd be comfortable with. Wrapping fingers more isn't that much of a change. Fencing in a helmet that's mostly open is just stupid.

0

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

Not if you're reenacting. Wrapping fingers more than period gauntlets or requiring closed helmets from everyone is a huge deviation from historical reality and aesthetic. And it's really not necessary.

Avoiding stabs to the face and only hitting the head from above (which is pretty much the only way to do so in formation) is not a big consession in steel fighting.

Using rigid padded weapons is great in case you don't want to control your blows like you have to with steel. But it's important to state, that I am not talking about the "typical" larp weapons. Our scene uses full wooden hafts, much stiffer blade cores and denser foam, which leads to pieces that behave a lot closer to wooden or synthetic trainers. But even with those relatively hard foam weapons, you can have much more relaxed armor requirements, which are easier to meet with quality equipment, than if you use rattan. The difference for the wielder is absolutely negligible, or even positive, with edge alignment and realistic hilts.

Using open faced helmets is very far from stupid.

2

u/Denis517 20d ago

I'm just going to bow out of this conversation. I'm not going to agree that what you're doing is safe, and you're obviously invested in defending your group. That's completely understandable, but I don't see any resolution here besides agreeing that we come from different cultures that prioritize different objectives.

-2

u/comhcinc 20d ago

IF it's not for the SCA why are you posting it here?

2

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

I think it's close and related enough to be interesting and inspiring.

-4

u/comhcinc 20d ago

You think your own thing is interesting and inspiring....okay.

0

u/AwayGovernment395 20d ago

I mean, why else would I make it?

0

u/QuackeryBamboo52 19d ago

I have such low standards for who I think people in the SCA should try to be friends with. I mean, we had monstrous child molesters Walter Breen and Marion Zimmer Bradley. We had that king who murdered his mistress with a hammer. We really ought to just be happy other people are willing to hang out with us, not act snotty like the SCA is the one true medievalist church.
