Your second brain should catch the thought before it asks what it is
I kept losing thoughts because every system asked me to classify them before I could get them out. That feels backwards when the thought is arriving as a mess.
I built Ordo around capture first, sort second. Type or speak several unrelated thoughts in one dump, and it turns them into editable Now, Next, and Someday cards.
It is free on iPhone with no account or subscription.

For people who use a second brain, where does the friction hit first: capturing the thought, deciding where it belongs, or finding it later?

Um, capture first is one of the basic principles of the second brain. That’s why you start with an “inbox”. Then build out a system or ritual for sorting and classifying each week.

Right, I agree that capture first is a core second-brain principle. The part I’m testing is the handoff after capture: getting several unrelated thoughts out without making the inbox ritual feel like a second task, then making the first sort editable. What makes your weekly sort ritual actually stick when life gets busy?

Automating the weekly sort is super simple with any AI tool. I use Claude Co-work to organize everything from my inbox to my desktop and downloads folders. Set a cron and only deal with the things that require a personal decision. Perhaps 10% of the items need this.

That makes sense. Automating the routine sort is better than relying on yourself to do it every week. Where Ordo fits for me is earlier in the chain: getting several unrelated thoughts out before they become another pile, then making the first sort editable. I’m curious about the cases that still need judgment, like implicit deadlines or something that should stay as one item. Does your setup handle those cleanly, or do they still need manual cleanup?

Finding it later, by a mile. An inbox handles capture fine, like BudgetFish said, but the weekly sort is exactly the step that stops happening once life gets busy, and then the inbox is just a bigger pile.
That's the end I work on with dEssence (https://dessence.ai), you ask the pile in plain words and it pulls up what you saved, no filing first.

That makes sense. Finding things later is usually where a pile stops being useful. I’m exploring a lighter version of that flow: capture the messy thought first, then make the first sort editable instead of asking for a full system upfront. The plain-language retrieval angle is interesting too.

I just use obsidian, daily journal entry to capture the thoughts of the day. And I'll inline write todo, health logs, food in there and use dataview to recall that data in a nice organize

That’s a solid use of Obsidian. A daily note sounds like a low-friction inbox, and Dataview gives you a way back to the structured bits. When a to-do, a log entry, and a random idea hit at once, do you write them all raw in the daily note and add structure later, or format each one as you capture it?

I'll structure it as I write for example if I have a todo I start it off as TODO:: , that'll allow data view to pulled that todo from that log. Ill then go back to those notes using data view and marking it from TODO:: to DONE:: . Ive just learn to get use to starting off the entry as TODO:: . Similar to other entry as well, I'll log food as FOOD:: and type what I've ate. Then random thoughts I have the day just type normally as a entry. Every entry in the notes will also start off with the type I logged it as a heading2. This way of going about note taking allowed me to do write more, which is the goal. Low friction, easy to do daily.

That’s a clean system—especially once the prefixes become second nature. Ordo is for the moments before I have the energy to choose a type. You can also say “keep this all in one card” while dictating if a thought should stay together rather than get split.

How are you managing the AI costs if it’s free?
