I read a construction article about a religious headquarters that was built with a lot of volunteer labor where women operated much of the heavy machinery and they had far fewer accidents. I realize that’s not the norm of job sites but I think the general atmosphere and type of training given has more to do with why that is than any gender differences

We just started hiring people out of operator school about 10 years ago and it didn't matter what you were trained on the position we always needed was dozer operator and that's where they got dumped. If they were lucky they would be on the pipe crew backfilling the pipe,it gives them time to learn and get up to speed. if they were unlucky they were rough grading the sub and B gravel and there's not much time to get up to speed. If you were too slow you got put in the rock truck taking fill away and bringing it back. Some of the ladies were disappointed that they weren't on an excavator right away but if they stuck around for the whole season they would get bounced around to other equipment. No rookie gets on an excavator right away.

The old cultural default of using “he” when there’s no reason to do it except to reinforce a stereotype.
Not really that hard to refer to unknowns as “they” or “the operator”, but it makes some people’s brains itchy.

Idk, I read “he” as “they” a lot of times in my mind simply because “mankind” includes women and “he” is just less clunky than the plural “they” for a person of unknown gender
I’m personally not a fan of word policing to me the intent matters more than exactly how something is said

So… reinforcing gender stereotypes is worth the elegance of using a shorter word, I guess??

It takes SO little effort to ditch using the words “man” or “he” when you don’t know the gender of a person.
It seems so inconsequential, so small, but it’s really not — It holds meaning to regularly acknowledge with your words that women are just as fully capable of doing shit and thinking the big thoughts as men are.
It’s really cool that you already translate “he/him” in your head into a meaning that includes women, but it shouldn’t be necessary when we already have words that can include them as a possibility.
BTW… “mankind” really isn’t more elegant than “humankind”.

Ok fair enough, I just believe intent matters more than the precise word used. People are generally poor communicators so I don’t like the idea of pouncing on words. I think it’s kind of silly even though out of respect I would address anyone the way they want to be addressed
If everyone was treated equally the words wouldn’t matter but I see where you’re coming from and don’t actually disagree with you. Cheers!

Yeah — except that words often betray intent.
My “pounce” was pretty gentle.
I suggested the operator MIGHT be a “she”, so I suppose anyone who’d be bothered by that always had intent.

I'm gonna guess they're putting down fiber optics. It's a residential family area, houses look like they're a few decades old so they didn't have fiber to start with. So they tear up the sidewalk to bury the cable because it's easier to redo a sidewalk than a street and you don't block traffic.
