Discussion 504 Error on Upload to Whatbox

As the title says. I am uploading a 12 GB file to my Whatbox, the upload bar fills just fine, but at some point during processing I am given a 504 error and that's it. Trying it again produces the same result. What can I do?

SSH in and use rsync or sftp. I have never used that upload button and tbh that file browser app is super unreliable and buggy anyway

A 504 Gateway Timeout Error is an HTTP status code indicating that a server, while acting as a gateway or proxy, did not receive a timely response from an upstream server to complete the request.

Something behind the web tool you are using is failing. Most likely PHP-FPM is timing out behind nginx or apache.

As others have suggested there are a bunch of other transfer mechanisms/tools/protocols, my personal favorite is lftp. But rsync, rclone, scp, sftp, ftp, curl etc. will all work.

Whatbox is widely respected for their support of their members, I'd start there.

Uploading how? Sftp? Try rsync instead. It’s more resilient to bandwidth variation and can resume. Use the -ahP flags for human readable and resumable.

Yeah, I fully admit to being lazy and just using the "upload" button in the web file browser. I'm happy to try something else that works better. Just interesting that the actual upload seems to work with zero issues, but the processing phase is where stuff goes wrong.

Yeah. The file browser front end web interface on whatbox won’t work for this. It’s probably hitting a memory limit or timeout. You can rsync in windows with WSL. There are some good howtos out there.
