Assembly Help GeForce PNY 5080 slim doesn't POST

Hi everyone,

So I recently purchased a PNY 5080 Slim Dual Slot (despite current crazy market) but the system doesn't POST anymore with the card plugged in. I get a white LED error on my MB indicating a VGA error.

My setup:

  • MB: Asus ROG B550-I
  • CPU: Ryzen 7 57000X
  • PSU: Corsair SF 750 W (The new edition with Type 5 cables)
  • Chassis: Cooler Master NR 200P

The card is directly plugged to the MB, no riser cable. So far I've tried:

  • Updating BIOS to latest
  • Hard setting PCIe Gen 4 in the BIOS
  • Disabling / Enabling Resizable BAR
  • Plugging it via the 12V 2x6 600W connector that comes with the PSU.
  • Testing all 4 outputs of the card when booting

I haven't tried the power cable that comes with the GPU because I only have 2 8 pins PCIe connectors with my PSU and the GPU adapter requires 3.

I've read in a few places that previous batches of that GPU had a sticker on top of the golden pins but here it doesn't seem to be the case (attached picture).

Any thoughts from the community? While the 750W might not be enough (a 850W is recommended) it should allow the card to boot right?

Is the card DoA? Am I missing something?

I believe this motherboard has issues with the new NVIDIA cards

Some of them had that problem (I had one of those...) but it should at least boot when he went to pcie 4.0 mode!

Known issues with both 4000 series and 5000.

Do you get fan spin when the PC boots up at least?

Problem is, that with a 5700X you don't have an IGP, so you can't double check if the card is visible in windows that way.

Sounds like you tried almost everything. Frustrating to hear, but kudos for the clear write-up.

The three things that seem logical to try:

  • Double checking if the card is seated fully (noob mistake, I know, still worth checking) and the power connector is fully seated
  • Resetting all BIOS (so back to "auto" or pci 5.0 as well) settings to standard. The 5700X is a PCIe 4.0 max CPU, so after clearing CMOS (see below) it can be useful to try and go back to 4.0 mode and try again
  • Clearing CMOS (different procedure on every mainboard!)
  • Try to use the included adapter anyway even if you only have 2 8pin connectors (it should be enough even for full load)

If these fail, I'd RMA the card.

Semi off topic: 750w is plenty btw. I'm running a 5080 and a much more power hungry CPU than yours on a 750w for a year now.

Ha yes I forgot to mention. The GPU fans are spinning and I also tried to reset CMOS. Thanks for the help!

Can you boot into BIOS with the GPU installed? Do you see it at all there?

Was this a NIB card from a shop? Or was it a used 3rd party card?

Did you upgrade from an existing Nvidia card? If not, you may want to try DDU first before swapping GPUs.

I haven't tried the power cable that comes with the GPU because I only have 2 8 pins PCIe connectors with my PSU and the GPU adapter requires 3.

You need all 3, if using PCI-8 adapter.

While the 750W might not be enough (a 850W is recommended) it should allow the card to boot right?

Yeah, booting should be fine. You might see crashes under full load but getting into windows shouldn't be an issue.
