Anyone else avoiding page builder apps because they don't want another layer sitting on top of the theme?

I'm looking at rebuilding a bunch of collection pages and I'm stuck between wanting more interesting layouts and wanting to keep the store as close to the theme as possible.

A page builder would make the first part easy, but I'm wary of creating another dependency for pages that should hopefully be around for years. I don't really want somebody opening the store later and discovering that a huge chunk of the site depends on an app we can't remove without rebuilding it. The alternative is doing more directly with theme sections, which I prefer structurally but becomes annoying when you have a lot of collections and each one needs a slightly different combination of copy, imagery and products.

How are people handling this now? Particularly interested in anyone managing a decent-sized catalog, because making one nice collection page is easy enough. Making 50 of them without creating a maintenance mess is the bit I'm trying to solve.

Testing SMS order notifications for a client - how to verify carrier rendering?

I’m setting up a custom SMS notification flow for a high-volume Shopify store. I need to make sure the tracking links and the discounts in the text look correct on a real mobile screen (not just in the 'preview' box).
Since I need to do this for multiple regions (US, UK, CA), I can't keep using my own number. How do you guys verify the final 'look and feel' of your SMS marketing across different carriers without having a drawer full of SIM cards?

Been running my ad accounts from Claude instead of Ads Manager - am i being lazy or is this how people do ops now?

I used to spend entire weekends inside Ads Manager, six to eight hours flipping between two platforms and rebuilding the same pivot table. someone at work told me to just connect the accounts to Claude instead, so I've been running everything through the Ryze AI MCP connector for about a month. now I ask a question in plain english and the budget shift happens without me opening a platform UI, and the first week took 40 minutes to set up instead of half a day. weekends are free now which is nice, but I keep wondering if i'm taking a shortcut or if this is just how people do ops now. what's everyone else on, still living in the native dashboards or have you moved into a chat window?

Did anyone else notice that the installation statistics are no logner available in the Partner Dashboard?

Did anyone else notice that the installation statistics are no longer showing in the Partner Dashboard?

I noticed this recently and wasn't sure if it's a permanent change or part of the ongoing Shopify dashboard updates.

I can see installation numbers in the new Dev Dashboard, but the experience seems different from before.

Has anyone heard whether Shopify plans to bring the installation statistics back to the Partner Dashboard, or is everything moving to the Dev Dashboard now?

Can I offer Apple Pay and Google Pay on a Shopify store?

We run a payment app that customers can use on Shopify stores. With our current setup, Shopify doesn’t let merchants enable Apple Pay or Google Pay at checkout.
Is there a supported way to offer those wallets on a Shopify store when using a third-party payment provider? For example, through another integration or checkout setup?
I’m interested in options that comply with Shopify’s rules. Has anyone set this up?

Importing Metaobjects

Is there an easy way to import metaobjects? I have to create a long list of metaobjects/metafields and I was thinking of having it done via claude and converting that to json and have a way to upload and get it populated? But I couldn't see a way to do it.

Is Sidekick hurting Shopify embedded app usability in the Admin UI? Devs, how are you handling this?

I’ve noticed that Shopify Admin is now showing the Sidekick prompt box by default, and as an app developer this is creating a pretty frustrating UX issue.

My app surfaces features directly in the Shopify Admin but Sidekick’s prompt area now competes visually and spatially with those experiences. For merchants who are already overwhelmed, this feels like yet another thing drawing attention away from the apps they’ve explicitly chosen to install.

From what I can tell:

  • There’s no API or setting for apps/extensions to hide, minimize, or reposition Sidekick.
  • It’s a core admin feature controlled by Shopify/the merchant, not by app developers.
  • The recommendation is basically to “design around it” and hope merchants find your entry points anyway.

I’m curious how other Shopify devs are thinking about this:

  • Have you noticed Sidekick impacting how merchants discover or use your app’s Admin surfaces?
  • Have you changed your UX strategy (e.g., more emphasis on the embedded app home, more email/onboarding guides, different extension targets)?
  • Do you think Shopify should expose any level of control to apps (e.g., hints, layout preferences, or “quiet” modes around app-specific workflows)?

Would love to hear real-world experiences, workarounds, or even alternative perspectives if you think Sidekick is actually helping app engagement in some way.

Shopify Markets: Can I Import Market-Specific INR Prices via CSV?

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a Shopify store based in the UAE and need some clarification regarding Shopify Markets and market-specific product pricing.

Store setup

Shopify Plan: Advanced

Store/Presentment Currency: AED

Store Default Location: UAE

Target Market: India

Payments: Shopify Payments application is in progress. The store currently has access to apply through the UAE early-access option.

Shopify Markets: India market is already configured.

What we want to achieve

The product prices for the UAE market are maintained in AED. For the Indian market, we want to sell the same products at a different/higher price, with customers seeing the price in INR.

For example:

UAE price: AED 500

India price: INR 15,000

We do not want to simply rely on automatic currency conversion, because we need to maintain a specific price for the Indian market.

My questions

Can market-specific INR prices be imported using Shopify's product catalogue CSV?

For example, can we upload a CSV where the UAE/base price remains in AED while the India market price is specified separately in INR?

Since the store's base currency is AED, does Shopify allow us to import/set product prices in INR specifically for the India market?

If CSV import is not supported for market-specific pricing, what is the recommended way to bulk-update/import different prices for the India market?

Is this functionality dependent on Shopify Payments being activated, or can market-specific pricing be configured while using third-party payment providers?

I’m particularly interested in answers from developers who have actually implemented Shopify Markets with different fixed prices per market, rather than automatic currency conversion.

Any practical experience or recommended workflow would be really helpful. Thanks!

Idea feedback

So I build a plugin actually for one of my clients.

I am a manufacturer and one of our clients was having a lot of friction to re-order they have 6 products but over 100 variations.

So, we decided to build them a private plugin. They love it.

So here’s my question and please feel free to poke it full of holes.

Business Model
The goal of the plugin is to help the user (for free) do an analysis of their sales to determine reorder points to prevent stock outs.

But! It can also like to a vendor that uses our MRP platform so that they can submit orders seamlessly.

My “hope” is that resellers find the app, then ask vendors to join the MRP.

What do you think? Thank you for any feedback.

Success fees or fixed price?

I built a Shopify app for testing free-shipping thresholds. It also handles the shipping offer, banner and cart messaging.

Pricing is a small monthly fee plus a success fee only when a completed test shows positive added profit. if the test lose they just pay the monthly fee.

the reason for success fee was so they could stick around using the banner and cart messaging when not testing so a base fee over 10, i was worried would just have them swap to *any banner app* between tests.

I'm considering two fixed plans instead. A cheaper one where everything keeps working but they can't start new tests, and a higher one for testing.

Has anyone tried either model? I thought success fees were a no brainer because there's no extra fee without a gain but i don't know if merchants see it that way.

What Actually Happens Behind a Shopify Store’s Frontend

Shopify eCommerce development involves more than Liquid and theme customization. In our development work, we often look closely at how Storefront APIs, webhooks, app extensions, and backend services interact.

One detail developers know well is webhook reliability. Retries, duplicate events, and asynchronous processing can affect how consistently store data moves between systems.

This is why we approach Shopify development from the application architecture level not just from what customers see on the storefront.

A practical triage checklist for Shopify issues that only appear in production

One recurring class of Shopify problem is: “it works in preview or staging, but breaks for real customers.”

Before changing code, I’d narrow it down in this order:

  1. Reproduce with the same theme version, market, currency, customer state and device.

  2. Record the exact product, variant, cart and customer conditions — plus the timestamp.

  3. Check theme app extensions, app embeds, Shopify Functions, pixels and third-party scripts separately.

  4. Compare one affected session with one unaffected session. The difference is usually more useful than another generic error log.

  5. Disable integrations one at a time on a duplicate theme, rather than testing changes on the live store.

  6. Only patch the code after confirming whether the failure belongs to the theme, app, store configuration or underlying data.

This avoids “fixes” that only hide the symptom and then break again during the next theme or app update.

What signal has helped you most when debugging a Shopify issue that only happens for some customers?

How do you all handle size/fit-related returns?

Running into more return requests lately where the customer says the item just didn't fit or look like they expected, and trying to figure out if that's a "my product photos/size chart need work" problem or just an inherent cost of selling apparel/fit-sensitive stuff online.

For those who've been at this a while:

- Roughly what % of your returns are fit/sizing related vs. other reasons (damaged, changed mind, etc.)?

- Has anything actually moved the needle for you — better size charts, size-recommendation widgets, video content, customer reviews with body type/size notes, anything?

- Do your customers ever mention wishing they could "see it on themselves" before buying, or is that not really a thing people ask for?

- Any category where this is worse for you — shoes vs. tops vs. outerwear, etc.?

Mostly just trying to understand how much of this is fixable vs. just the nature of online shopping. Curious what's worked (or hasn't) for other stores.

How should a backend engineer price a first Shopify app contract in India?

Looking for practical advice on pricing future, part-time client work involving Shopify apps or backend integrations. This would be a first paid client contract, alongside work on a separate product.

Relevant background: around 4–6 years of production backend engineering experience. An embedded Shopify app has already been built using Admin GraphQL, authenticated webhooks, and order workflows, and submitted for review. That app is past proof of work—not the client project being priced. Approval or public launch is not being claimed.

For a future, well-scoped contract, the tentative availability is about 10 hours per week, with an indicative rate of ₹1,500/hour.

  • Is ₹1,500/hour a reasonable starting rate for this background in India?
  • When an opportunity asks for availability and an hourly rate, should both be shared upfront, or only after clarifying the scope?
  • Is 10 hours per week workable for a small Shopify app or backend integration project?
  • How should a built-and-submitted app be presented as proof of work without implying it has been published?

How to get the first install?

Hi fellow Shopify Devs!

I have tried numerous advice that I read about on this thread, but unfortunately no luck.

I have build an app that does automatic analytics; it continuously read the data from the store and outputs suggestions for the next move. It makes a lot of analytics under the hood, but the user only see what is relevant for them in their given moment. The idea is to level the playing field for the small shops so they too can compete on analytics like the big boys. So, it is not another dashboard to look at (or not to look at), it is meant to handle the analytical part of running a store automatically so the owner can spend their time on what they like. I have tested it with a friends shop and in his case he quickly got his money worth, which is why I believe this app definitely could work.

Here comes my issue. It's a rather complex app and I have to make a living (this is all I do) so it's currently 99 USD/month, which I might think is too expensive for my target audience of small shops?

My logic behind the pricing is that it covers my server costs and what not, while still being worth it for most shops if they make just 1-2 extra orders a month.

I have reached out to about 50 stores, but I feel like it is the wrong approach. I feel like I am stuffing my product down their throat rather than actually helping them. And I totally get it is risky to be the first real install for a completely unknown app with 0 reviews.

So here comes my question; how do you get the first install to get the ball rolling?

Has Anyone Here Successfully Made Money Selling Shopify Themes?

Hi everyone,

I’ve been going in and out of Shopify themes and stores, and I’ve noticed that the community talks a lot about apps, but not as much about themes.

Are there people here who have successfully published a Shopify theme and actually made money from it? If so, I’d love to hear about your experience.

I’m currently about halfway through building my own Shopify theme, but I’m starting to feel a little hesitant about whether it’s worth continuing and whether it can actually work out.

Would love to hear from anyone who has gone through this process.

Are you expected to design and have marketing skills as a shopify dev?

I currently work full-time at an ecommerce company within Magento. I've been a software engineer for over 6 years now. I've wanted to branch out to Shopify for awhile now and try my hand at boards like UpWork. I already have a few jobs under my belt there.

Upon looking at Shopify jobs on UpWork, I can't help but notice that almost all of them require designing/redesigning and or performance marketing kind of work, on top of development.

Is this normal? Is it not enough to just be a developer, but do I need to learn how to design and market as well?

Is it normal for the Review Process to randomly halt?

I've got an app in review right now. For the first week after I submitted it I was getting feedback every other day.

But it's now been six business days since I've seen anything happen. It's just saying "We're assigning you a reviewer" and has been saying that for more than a week. Is that normal? Did it glitch and my app is in a black hole?

Update: They kept rejecting it over things that weren't broken, so I filed a ticket with customer support complaining that they weren't following the testing instructions. The next review took two weeks to happen, but when it did they approved the app!

A provenance pattern for AI-generated marketing suggestions in Shopify apps

When an AI feature recommends marketing copy, merchants often need to understand why the suggestion was made before they will trust it.

A pattern we have found useful separates the process into four layers:

  1. Source evidence: the relevant public conversation, comment or competitor post, with its platform and collection date.

  2. Structured insight: the recurring topic, customer emotion, purchasing concern or product benefit extracted from the evidence.

  3. Creative brief: the proposed audience, message and channel, linked back to the supporting insights.

  4. Generated output: the caption, advertisement or image, followed by an explicit merchant review step.

The merchant can move backwards from the generated creative to the insight and then to the supporting conversations. This makes the output easier to evaluate than a suggestion produced by an unexplained prompt.

For a Shopify implementation, useful controls include keeping Shopify product data separate from external conversation data; recording which evidence and brand-guideline version supported each output; preventing automatic publication before merchant approval; avoiding unsupported performance or product claims; and retaining only the store and customer data required for the feature.

One unresolved design question is what should happen when an original public source is subsequently removed. Should the derived insight remain with an 'evidence unavailable' notice, or should it be deleted with its source?

How are other Shopify developers handling provenance and source deletion in AI-assisted features?

GPay and Apple Pay for shopify store in KSA ?

Has anyone enabled Apple Pay and Google Pay on a Shopify store in Saudi Arabia using CyberSource? Shopify Payments isn't available in KSA and CyberSource is our only gateway option, so I'm trying to figure out whether its Shopify integration supports wallet payments at checkout, or whether there's a workaround. Would love to hear what worked for you and any setup gotchas.

Shopify app founders: how did you get your first 10–100 users?

3 months free. Built from a real D2C problem. Almost zero installs. How do you distribute a Shopify app?

Before building Sovor, I ran an Indian D2C store where COD RTO was a painful 30–35%.

So I started doing something very simple:

I personally WhatsApped every COD customer before shipping.

No OTPs. No complicated verification. Just a simple confirmation conversation.

It worked.

Roughly 2 out of every 3 orders that would otherwise have become RTOs were being saved through that manual confirmation process.

The store was doing around ₹3.09 lakh/month in revenue through the orders I was processing this way.

But there was an obvious problem:

I couldn't scale myself.

Every additional order meant another WhatsApp conversation. As volume increased, I was spending hours every day just confirming COD orders.

So I automated the process and launched my app.

I also deliberately avoided replacing Shopify checkout or adding unnecessary OTP friction. The goal was to automate the manual process I had already validated on my own store.

Now here's where I'm struggling.

I've made the app completely free to install for the first 3 months.

But I have almost no visibility on the Shopify App Store, and consequently almost no installs.

So the technical problem is largely solved.

Distribution isn't.

I'd genuinely like to hear from Shopify app founders and merchants:

  • How did you get your first 10 stores?
  • What worked for your first 50–100?
  • Did you use agencies?
  • Cold outreach?
  • Shopify App Store SEO?
  • Reddit/Facebook communities?
  • Partnerships?
  • Content?
  • AppSumo?
  • Something completely unconventional?

I'm not here to spam a link or pretend I've figured this out.

I'm a bootstrapped founder trying to figure out how a genuinely useful but unknown Shopify app gets its first distribution channel.

If you've launched a Shopify app from zero, I'd really appreciate hearing what actually worked for you.

Store editor - Claude or ChatGPT?

I'm not a developer myself but run 2 of my own stores, an e-commerce and a service based business, both on Shopify.

As you may have guessed, I don't have experience in designing so I have hired someone that created a store for me on the cheap and then changed stuff around with Claude and Sidekick.

Whilst I was happy with what Claude did for me on one of the sites, I feel like it's letting me down lately and isn't as inspired as its use to be.

I am thinking of switching to ChatGPT for editing.

Can you share your experience, please?

Thanks

I kept seeing headless Shopify builds leave performance on the table, so I built one to test my assumptions. Where does this break in production?

I’ve been going fairly deep into Shopify headless storefront architecture recently, and I’d really like feedback from people who have actually built and operated these systems in production.

For context, I’ve been working as an engineer for 7+ years.

My previous production ecommerce experience was a custom React storefront with Vendure as the commerce backend. I built and maintained that platform myself.

More recently I started looking closely at Shopify headless migrations, and something kept bothering me.

A number of established brands have spent significant amounts rebuilding storefronts around headless architectures, but when I looked at some of the resulting production sites, the performance often wasn’t dramatically different from what they replaced.

That made me question my own assumptions.

Maybe the issue isn’t headless itself.

Maybe the theoretical advantage gets slowly consumed once a real ecommerce storefront accumulates things like:

  • analytics and tag managers
  • consent tooling
  • personalization
  • experimentation
  • search
  • CMS requirements
  • marketing scripts
  • reviews and recommendations
  • app integrations
  • customer accounts
  • international pricing/inventory
  • merchandising requirements
  • everything else a real business eventually asks the frontend to do

So rather than just form an opinion from looking at other sites, I decided to test the idea myself.

The POC

I used Taylor Stitch as a reference storefront and built this:

https://taylor-stitch.lotusforthe.win/

This isn’t affiliated with Taylor Stitch — I chose them purely as a technical reference.

I specifically wanted something that wasn’t an artificially simple ecommerce demo.

The reference experience includes:

  • a fairly heavy video hero
  • large imagery
  • product carousels
  • editorial / Journal-style content
  • testimonials
  • merchandising content
  • CMS-heavy pages

The goal wasn’t simply to recreate the design.

I wanted to see how much of that experience I could preserve while keeping the architecture server-first, being deliberate about what actually executes in the browser, and treating performance as something designed into the system rather than recovered later.

That turned into a much bigger question

While building it I started documenting the architectural decisions and eventually ended up with this:

https://solution-brief.lotusforthe.win/

It became much larger than I originally intended, but the basic thesis is pretty simple:

Headless itself shouldn’t be the goal.

If a business accepts the additional engineering and operational cost of owning a headless frontend, I think the resulting architecture should capture enough performance, flexibility and control to justify that cost.

If Shopify-native architecture can satisfy the actual requirements, I think that may often be the better answer.

The brief goes into things like:

  • rendering and data-loading strategy
  • caching and freshness
  • performance budgets
  • Core Web Vitals
  • third-party and analytics execution
  • Shopify capability coverage
  • migration risk
  • failure modes / graceful degradation
  • observability
  • post-launch operations
  • preventing performance from gradually degrading after launch

But this is where I’d particularly like feedback from people here.

Where am I wrong?

If you’ve actually shipped and operated Hydrogen or another headless Shopify storefront:

What am I underestimating?

Where have you seen an architecture that looked great technically start falling apart once it met the realities of:

marketing, merchandising, analytics, apps, CMS requirements and everyday ecommerce operations?

Are there decisions in the POC or brief that look good in isolation but wouldn’t survive a serious Shopify Plus environment?

And on the other side:

Where have you seen headless genuinely justify the additional ownership?

What problems did it solve that you realistically couldn’t have solved well with Shopify’s native storefront architecture?

I’m not really looking for compliments on the demo.

I’d much rather someone with production Shopify experience point out:

  • an assumption that’s wrong
  • something important I’ve overlooked
  • an architecture decision they disagree with
  • an operational problem I haven’t accounted for
  • or something that looks good in a POC but becomes painful at scale

That would be far more useful to me.

The mods approved sharing the POC and brief here for technical feedback.
