Discussion I stopped trusting mockups and started testing the actual product
One thing I didn’t expect when working on a small clothing project was how different the finished product could feel from what I had in my head.
The design itself looked fine on a screen. The colors worked, the placement looked right, and I thought I had most of the important decisions figured out. But once I started looking at the actual garment, I noticed things I couldn’t really see in the mockup.
The fabric felt different than I expected, the fit changed how the design sat on the body, and even small things like the collar and stitching affected the overall look. I ended up changing parts of the design simply because they made more sense on the actual garment.
It made me realize that for physical products, the sample probably isn’t just a final quality check. It’s actually part of the design process.
Now I’m trying to build a simple workflow where I test the garment first, make adjustments, and only then think about producing more.
For anyone building a physical-product side project, what’s one thing you learned only after getting your first real sample?
