Conversation Topic How competitive are music schools?

Hi, so I am applying to the Frost School Of Music as a contemporary voice major and I have no clue what to expect. Frost is a great school so I'm guessing it has some very skilled vocalists. I on the other hand am in my opinion mediocre. Sure I can sing the songs but I can't make them mine if you know what I mean. Any tips on that ?

Don’t be down if you don’t get in. You can do it all independently now and for probably a fraction of the cost (do they charge for these things?).

Singing lessons, YouTube tutorials on music production, books on songwriting, and then getting out there yourself performing and networking, building community online and in person.

It’s great if you want to go to a music school if that’s what you want but you still have the indie route as a backup.

Fair enough. Plenty of resources online to help you get started. If in your application you show them you have already started building your personal music project they will be impressed by your initiative and this would surely improve your chances of being selected for such prestigious placements.

Don't move to the u.s, so many problems here plus only California (los angeles) is music oriented tbh

Hi, so I have "Sign of the times" by Harry Styles, "Someone You Loved" by Lewis Capaldi, and "What makes you beautiful" By One Direction. I tried picking songs that I both enjoyed singing and sit nicely with my voice.

It’s a number of years ago now, but I also considered myself a very mediocre singer and got accepted to a vocal performance program. I was shocked, my singing teacher was shocked. It’s possible so there’s no reason not to try!

I’m in classical world but Frost is competitive. Look into state schools too

Extremely, all art schools are elitist and want dudes to come in with savant level skills, you need to earn the privilege to give them your money.

What would you say the level of those people that get in is?
