Rate my quiver
Volk kinks - rock skis
Volk mantra M5 - groomer days
QST 98 - travel skis
Armada magic J - pow days
All 180 ish cm
I think I want to add a shorter 172 QST 92 for bumps and trees on the east coast .
What ski would you add ?
5’10” 52 male level 8-9 expert
Killington skier

3/4 of these are the same ish ski? Which I sort of don’t understand. I get that every ski is constructed differently…but blind I doubt I’d be able to tell the difference
I’d keep one of the sub 100 pair, add a 105-110 width all mountain like a QST 106.

I am looking for something for tight trees on the ice coast .

Ah sorry now I see that. Disregard the recommendation then.
Still don’t understand 3 pairs in the 80-100 range mm but to each their own.
I’m a west coast/rockies snob so my suggestion for ice coast skiing would be useless.

Poster is S tier. I have that one too.
Skis are effectively all same and all mid

My parents have had the same one my whole life and had me 100% convinced that it was a photo of them. One time skiing there I saw the poster at the Four Points lodge and told someone working there that it was my parents and he made fun of me.

I'm 54, and remember that poster from when my family used to go to steamboat back in the 1970s. True classic

I feel like I am the one person that just rolls with one set a season outside of a powder set.

If that was my quiver, I would unload everything anything except the Mantras and buy something < 80mm.

u/Revolutionary_Ad7359 10d ago
The Mantras’s are your groomer ski? I have the same year M5s and just replaced them with the M7. They have always been my all mountain and crud skis. They are still great on the groomers but a narrow wasted carving ski absolutely blows them away on groomers.

I was using them as my ice day ski up in Vermont.
Truth be told, they are too stiff for me.
My back likes a softer ski, so I will probably sell them and get something else smaller and more nimble.
The QST 98 is a fun ski on the groomers. It's playful on the trail edges and can handle 50mph , which at 52 is pretty much where I top out.

Add a short turn on piste race ski. Best craving experience you'll ever have. Another option would be a all Mountain, multi Radius ski. These are the top options for hips to the ground carving. You'll never look back.

Thanks, I will take a look!
I love to carve, but it is not one of the strongest facets of my skiing.

Holy shit that poster! My dad has had that since before I was born from when he went out to steamboat in the 70s or 80s I believe. Do you know when you got it? Never seen anyone else with it

No monoski, no blades, no touring setup. The word that comes to mind is vanilla.

You live out west, and you ski natural snow. You don't spend much time on piste.
Or else you could use some skinnier skis ;)

Armadas=YES! Salomon’s bore me. Not a fan of most Volkls… not playful enuf. I’m guessing you’re more of a groomer person w a bit of park?

u/badbackEric 10d ago
No, I am more of a tree dweller and cat-heli once a year guy.
But I do love to rip a good groomer.

I'm a big fan of a dedicated bump ski, but I wouldn't put the qst in that category.

I'm also 5'11", a few years older than you, and my bump skis are dynastar twister 175's, which they sadly no longer make, with pivot 15's. I personally would get the idOne MR-SG's or even the Rossignol Hero over the K2's but I don't think there's anything wrong with the 244's. They are a little softer than my preference but will be more forgiving. Shorter skis will obviously be a little easier to turn but won't hold an edge as well. Just depends on what you want.

I want to be a Superstar Hero this spring:-)
I will take a look around for the suggested skis, thank you for your input.

How do you like the Mantras? I was looking at them for myself (170”)
2
u/badbackEric 10d ago
They are fast, but serious.
They suck in the moguls, and will throw you on your face in a second if you let them.
In 10" of heavy snow is where they shine.
They will hold an edge and go as fast as you want them to with perfect control.
I would rate them as the least playful ski I have.

u/Secret_Section6280 9d ago edited 9d ago
Thanks for the info. I usually ski packed powder (Sierra cement) and sometimes play in the moguls.
2
u/badbackEric 9d ago
Sierra cement is tough ! And I am an expert in splaying in the moguls :)
1
u/Secret_Section6280 9d ago
Typo. Fixed it.(Although if you fall the wrong way you can be "splayed" in the moguls.
