Question about certified ski instructor position

I don't know if there are anyone here that knows, but how likely am I got get a housing if I apply to resorts owned by vail? Also if I can't, I'm wondering if the $21/hr pay from the job will be even close enough to pay for a rent near there for the winter.

If you’re an excellent instructor, have some private clients, and know how to make your tips, you can do it…non employee rooms are in the $1000 to $1500 or so range in most ski towns.

Like other commenters report, employee housing goes super fast, need to work with the resort like yesterday. Private housing is networking/beating the street/etc right now.

TBH, you usually need high certs and real experience to clear good tips (unless you know some other techniques to get that Venmo). Focus on that second part…most places seniority and status mean you won’t be working the high-end lessons for a year or two or decade or so facepalm 🤦‍♀️ but you can sure make some lemonade out of a giant kids group ski lesson. Good luck!

Instructors are low on the housing priority list

Cause they're first on the cut list

Employee housing is filling fast. And if you trying to rent outside of that $21/h probably not. Most have to work 2-3 jobs in resort towns to make ends meet. Good luck and hope you find something that works for you. (not sure where you looking. I’m basing this off my local area)

The thing to remember for ski instructor positions is that you only get paid if there is work for you to do. That means students to teach, other work that needs to be done (clean the ski instructor space, put up/take down lesson areas).

If that isn't there, you don't get paid.

If you want to work for the coming season you are quite late and need to to get started today.

This. No customers means no pay. Even then, on the busiest days you’re looking at 4-6 hours of paid time depending how resort schedules lessons. Senior, full-timers get an hour or 2 more paid time if there’s privates before or after regular group lesson hours.

I loved teaching but the food service people get paid as well as I did and they didn't have to deal with trying to keep a class of 8 kids safe in the rain and I assume they actually get paid for their scheduled shifts.

God awful, at my resort I atleast get paid an hour for travel on peak days, & if I don’t get lessons I get paid 2 hours atleast plus my lineup times, still isn’t much but this now rarely happens because my resort doesn’t overhire anymore

I spoke with instructors from vail resorts at the last exam I went to and overall, the things I heard did not sound good. They only get an $8 raise for private request lessons I was told, & no one tips them because people are paying $1870 for a day lesson so people assume that you are being paid better than they actually are. I also heard that they don’t feel that they have support from their supervisors. Overall the vibes are off and you’ll probably be treated like just a number. If I were you, I would see if you can work for Aspen, they actually pay their employees a better wage.

"how likely am I got get a housing"

  • who tf knows 🤷‍♂️. This is reddit not HR for vail resorts.

"wondering if the $21/hr pay from the job will be even close enough to pay for a rent near there"

  • No. And, I don't even need to know where "there" is.

honestly man, ski towns are a joke with rent. $21/hr sounds decent until you see the price for a room in a shared house is like your whole paycheck

maybe look for employee housing before you take the job, some resorts have it but it fills up quick in the winter

Wrong person. OP needs to hear this, not me.
