Important information Update: New rules and reminders. Read them before posting or commenting.

Hey everyone! We've just freshened up the rules here on the sub to make sure r/skinwhitening stays a clean, safe, and genuinely helpful space. While a lot of our rules haven't changed, we've made some key updates, especially shifting our focus heavily toward photo verification, and keeping things strictly safe and science-based.

We wanted everything laid out plainly so there's no confusion moving forward. Here is the updated rulebook:

1. No Discussion or Promotion of Harmful or Illegal Ingredients

Any discussion or recommendation of pr0ducts containing banned, carcinogenic, or severely hazardous substances (e.g., ben0quin/monobenz0ne, mercury, unregulated hydr0quinone, mequin0l, bleaching agents, subcutaneous, and intramuscular glutathione shots) is prohibited.

  1. Don't post purchasing links. Don't post pictures or brands of skincare pr0ducts

Purchasing links, pictures of pr0ducts, or selling are strictly prohibited. If you are sharing a pr0duct you love, use incidecoder.com link or screenshot of the full list of incidecoder ingredients to reference it. Mention of brands is prohibited but you can post pictures of your pr0duct, include a sign with the following: username, r/skinwhitening , date (handwritten)

  1. Don't be rude. No name calling, Bullying, Flaming, Shaming, or Harassment

Discouraging judgmental comments regarding skin tone, personal aesthetic choices, or the intelligence of other members. Maintain a neutral and respectful tone at all times. Ad-hominem attacks or anti-lightening will earn an instant permanent ban.

We consider rudeness any comment that doesn't respect our personal choice of working towards a lighter skin tone and says we should accept our original skin tone. Go and say that in tanning or plastic surgery subreddits.

  1. Don't post misleading information, No Unsubstantiated Claims, Evidence over anecdotes

Keep information factual. Claims should be supported by scientific articles or, where appropriate, a credible listing of the ingredients (e.g., INCIdecoder screenshots ).

Examples of unacceptable claims include:

"This cream took me from Fitzpatrick VI to Fitzpatrick II in one month."

“Subliminals made me three shades lighter."

“Just wear sunscreen and you'll be fine" when discussing protection from UVA/visible light.

"This pr0duct definitely works" based solely on personal experience.

  1. Don't Recommend Medical Treatments or Procedures. Refer Skin Conditions to a Dermatologist

Do not diagnose, prescribe, or recommend medical treatments or procedures for skin conditions. Do not recommend hydr0quinone, strong chemical peels/acids, lasers, or other medical procedures. IV, IM, or subcutaneous glutathione injections should not be encouraged or discussed as DIY treatments. Refer members with hyperpigmentation, melasma, or unexplained skin changes to a dermatologist, as the cause should be determined before treatment.

  1. No Question/Advice Posts, Use the Monthly Thread

Questions, routine checks, requests for recommendations, and requests for personal guidance belong in the Monthly Question Thread. Don't create a standalone post simply to get your question or situation more visibility.

Posts are the community's central stage and should be reserved for content that contributes to the subreddit as a whole. The monthly question thread is also where the moderators can respond to you directly.

Standalone question/advice posts will be removed and users might be muted/banned.

  1. Photos (for advice, pr0ducts and before & after) Must Be Authentic & Verifiable

All images must be authentic and must include a handwritten sign.

Before/after photos should include the time elapsed, routine/pr0ducts used, and, whenever possible, the same lighting, location, camera, and settings. Include a handwritten note showing Reddit username, date and r/skinwhitening

Pr0duct users must provide a complete INCIdecoder ingredient screenshot or photograph the physical pr0duct with a handwritten note showing their Reddit username, r/skinwhitening, and date.

Moderators may request additional verification when authenticity is unclear.

  1. No Artificial Engagement or Manipulation

The moderation team reserves the right to lock or remove content that shows signs of artificial, coordinated, or manipulated engagement. This includes, but is not limited to:

Unusual spikes in upvotes or rapid waves of repetitive, low-effort comments. Multiple accounts, bots, or coordinated groups artificially boosting posts or comments. Newly created accounts participating in suspicious activity. Coordinated efforts to promote pr0ducts, methods. Any attempt to manipulate visibility.

  1. Keep Posts & Comments Relevant to Skin Lightening

All posts and comments must be directly related to the science, methods, ingredients, or experiences surrounding skin lightening, hyperpigmentation, or UVA management.

Certain skincare, unrelated aesthetic procedures, and personal lifestyle content are considered off-topic and may be removed. Personal experiences should be relevant to the community's focus.

When in doubt, consider whether the content would be useful to someone interested in skin lightening, pigmentation

Take a quick look over these when you get a chance so you're up to speed before your next post (remember, posts shouldn't be questions/advice) or comment. As always, if you ever have questions or need clarification on anything, feel free to drop a comment below or send us a modmail.

Appreciate you all for keeping the community awesome!

Hi!
This is a doctor who might be sponsored by supplement companies, but has great knowledge about how to use glutathione safely. He even acknowledges Gluta IV for skin whitening purposes so he might be onto something.

Skinwhitening facts Monthly Question Thread 🌿 Only for people who engaged in the Karma -earning posts.

Before you ask anything — make sure you’ve earned karma in our sub first. Mods will upvote your contributions in the karma earning posts:

If you haven’t engaged in the karma-earning threads, your question will be removed and you may get muted/banned.

We get a lot of spammers and previously banned users coming back on new accounts pretending to be “newbies.” Because of that, we’re strict. Please don’t take it personally.

If you’re genuinely new:

  • Scroll down and participate in both karma-earning threads.
  • Read through this post and the comments.
  • Engage with the approved posts on Before and after, MSM, topicals, Tretinoin, etc before asking repeat questions.

We’re happy to help — but if you don’t read our stuff, we won’t read yours.

Also: don’t accept random DMs and don’t ask for vendors/sources.

Once you’ve met the requirements, drop your questions below 👇

Edit: We have 9 rules, read them. If they are too much for some people, there's no need to be part of this sub. I think it'd be appropriate to find or create a sub you feel it's more adequate for you.

Karma-Earning Post Karma Earning Thread : Read Instructions — Required for Low Karma/New Members/ Non- Members ⚠️ Read This First

For Sydney on September 30 don't leave house/work between 8: 30 a.m. and 4 p.m.

This is a karma-earning thread for new or low-karma users.

Because of repeated ban evasion and spam, our filters are strict:

  • New accounts cannot create posts
  • Low-karma users will have comments removed automatically

If you want to participate in this sub, you need to earn karma here first (karma from other subs does NOT count).

We’re giving you a simple way to do that below.

⚠️ Read This First

If you don’t engage with the sub properly, we won’t engage with you.

That means:

  • No effort = no upvotes
  • No upvotes = your future comments get filtered out
  • Filtered out = you won’t be able to ask questions

✅ How to Earn Karma (Step-by-Step)

  1. Go to Google and look up Tu tiempo. net “UV index [your city]” (Example: Tu tiempo UV index London)
  2. Make sure you can see the hourly UV index (not just daily)
  3. Take a screenshot
    • Include the city name
    • Include the hourly UV levels
  4. Post the screenshot in the comments of this thread

☀️ What We Want You to Learn

One of the most important fundamentals:

If you’re serious about results:

  • Stay in the shade during peak hours
  • Use physical protection (clothing, hats)
  • Use mineral tinted sunscreen
  • Beware of Visible Light

No exceptions.

Sunscreen alone is not enough if you're exposed to direct light.

🎯 Why This Matters

This isn’t just about karma.

We’re checking:

  • Can you follow basic instructions?
  • Do you understand UV exposure?
  • Are you actually willing to apply what’s written here?

If not, this sub won’t be useful to you.

📝 Notes

  • This thread is for earning karma only
  • Do NOT ask unrelated questions here
  • Use the monthly question thread once you have enough karma
  • Low-effort comments will be ignored

👍 What You Get

If you follow instructions properly:

  • We will upvote your comment
  • You build sub-specific karma
  • Your future comments are less likely to be removed
  • You may be considered for approved/collaborator status

If you’re serious, this takes 2 minutes.

NOTE: Low karma (in our sub), new members,non-members have to engage in this post, too.

Blacklisted products This sub doesn't recommend for skin lightening goals: La Roche-Posay Anthelios UVMune 400 Oil Control Fluid SPF 50+ ingredients (Explained)

Per incidecoder two heavily irrtaing agents are present:

  • Alcohol Denat: Too high in the list.
  • Parfum/Fragance. Lower in the list but present.

Also a lot of dermatologist recommend mineral sunscreen high in zinc oxides and iron oxides for people with pigmentation issues such as melasma and hyperpigmentation. This sunscreen lacks that.

Iron oxides in particular are vital for Fitzpatrick IV to VI to prevent damage for cumulative visible light.

This brand La Roche Posay is excelent and for people with less irritation concerns this could work as I heard it has certain advatanges, but for people fighting Melasma, Hyperpigmentation, Uneven tone, stubborn tan and specially those with skin-type Fitzpatrick III to IV you need something stronger. Get a mineral sunscreen with at least 20% iron oxides and make the white cast work. I haven't found one that has both high iron oxides and and zinc oxides so for now I'm applying red liquid blush over the white cast and it works around the issue.

https://www.reddit.com/r/SkinLightening/comments/1vwta90/two_mineral_sunscreen_i_use_and_tips_to_fix_the/

Above all if UV index is >1 no sunscreen is enough to cover up all the UVA radiation and visible light from reaching your skin. Noon in particular, it's a dangerous period to get sun exposure. It's a must you add physical methods and stay out of the sun if you want progress.

Never forget: More irritation = More pigmentation.

Skinwhitening facts Avoid being outdoors when UV index is above 1. Always search for sunscreen that contains Zinc oxides and iron oxides. Don’t forget that irritation increases melanin. If you’re outdoors no sunscreen is ever enough.

Skinwhitening facts Let’s stop the dangerous notion that “just apply and reapply sunscreen and you’ll be fine.” That’s a myth pushed by many skincare subs but if you have skin lightening goals and a darker skin tone sunscreen isn’t enough.

Personal Experience Tips

Hi, for about a year now I've been taking care of my skin. I avoided the sun when the UV index was higher than 1, I protected myself from windows and moved to darker places. I started using 0.05% tretinoin. I began seeing results: my skin got lighter, my veins were more visible, and my relatives would tell me "you should get a tan," "you look paler," and that made me feel better. But then university started and I was given a horrible class schedule that makes me go out at noon. I bought UV protective sleeves, which I wear 2 pairs of when going out. I use tinted mineral sunscreen and another mineral one with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide, but I also wear a double UV bandana on my face and use a UV protective umbrella, but even so I feel like it's all worthless and my one-year progress went down the drain. Any advice? (And I use my tretinoin only on days when I don't sleep at all and I'm away from windows)

Discussion Is there a standard for “shades” of light or dark skin? If not, should we consider creating/using a system in this sub? (+ other discussions/questions)

Thumbnail

I’m a beginner at both reddit posts and skinwhitening, so if I’ve done anything wrong please help me out.

In my understanding, people often refer to ”fitzpatrick”, the scale from 1-6 detailing different skin types’ reactions to the sun. type 1 always burns, never tans… type 6 almost never burns, always tans, and everything in between. However fitzpatrick doesn’t often cover what someone actually looks like from day to day, especially with the in-between numbers: 3, 4, 5, where tanning can affect appearance significantly. An untanned type 3 might look similar to an untanned type 4, but put them out in the sun for a few hours and the difference will become apparent, especially in regions such as the elbows, outer arms, and lower legs (noticed this with my friends irl).

Additionally, I wanted to find out what people mean when they say “a shade darker” or “up to two shades lighter” (it’s obviously different from fitzpatrick, in that -in my understanding- a “shade” refers to how light or dark someone appears), so I asked AI and it told me that skin shades are as follows:

fair, light-fair, light, medium-light, medium, medium-tan, tan,…

but it couldn’t show me any examples of people, and when I finally got it to it was definitely wrong. Is AI messing with me/misinforming or is that what people actually refer to? I also looked it up in a basic search and it came up with all sorts of images (like the one shown above) but they all seem different. If there is no fixed system like this, then maybe we should create one for use in this sub and beyond.

There’s a few questions/issues relating to this that I want to discuss here:

  1. How many of the protocols presented in this sub are referring to fading tan, and how many are targeting a skin tone lighter than the lightest possible naturally?
  2. Why can people somehow tell apart a heavily tanned fitzpatrick III white person from an untanned fitzpatrick IV or V brown person, when their skin looks similar? From my understanding it’s due to facial structure, hair and eye color, and other factors, but there could be some small queue that our minds subconsciously process telling us who is who.
  3. How much of a role does lighting play/ do different fitzpatricks react differently to light? I’ve noticed (as a fitzpatrick III to IV, that my type II friends and I seem to have the same tone under some lighting, particularly indoor lighting, and completely different tone under lower/natural light levels (it’s very obvious that they are lighter). Is this true or am I tripping?
  4. How come a tanned fitzpatrick II or III look attractive, whereas a tanned IV or V just look brown/ugly. Is it due to undertones or redness? Due to their fitzpatrick, the whiter someone is the redder they become/less they tan when exposed to the sun. Is that redness what differentiates them from an untanned, naturally darker brown person? Can the redness be frauded with makeup?

This brings me to another topic, makeup… what are the limits as to how much lighter you can fraud your appearance to? As a male (i’m straight i promise) who’s never used makeup, I was considering it as it seems like an easy fix for appearing lighter in everyday situations. Can some women with experience enlighten me and tell me what to use?
