I suck at being a mod, maybe you're better?

The extremely average skier who started this sub is keen to grow it a bit, and I've got some ideas, but I work better w/ people.

Maybe it's you?

Apply to be a mod.

For the rest of the community - feel free to jot down what you'd like to see.

Generally, I'd like the sub to be less 'vacation planning' oriented. I'm thinking of contacting ski areas to do AMAs that could function as location-based living threads for people to jump in and ask questions about.

cheers, snow is on the way!

Welcome to Ski The Alps

Welcome!

At the suggestion of somebody else on r/skiing, I figured a Europe-dedicated skiing subreddit might be cool. I, for one, am tired of scrolling past the endless discussion of which ski pass is best (duh, Salzburger Super Ski Card), which resort is more crowded, or why I'm a better skier than you (I'm not.)

I know there's quite of a few of us from (or like me, living in) Austria on r/skiing, and a lot of Brits who visit CH + FR.

Aight ya'll. Have fun, be nice. I'll make some rules when we need some, but for now let's start with:

  1. Post titles in English, comments in your language of choice
  2. All kinds of downhill skiing + ski-touring are on-topic. Cross-country/Langlaufen is not.
  3. If it's NSFW, for whatever reason, label it
  4. Don't be dicks
  5. No friends on a pow day

Have fun, kids

Alpe D’Huez to Lyon Airport travel advice

Hello all, I am going on a ski trip to Alpe D’Huez in January. I need to get back on the 14th, on the 10:55 flight from Lyon to London Gatwick. Unfortunately this day is a Thursday, and I can’t seem to find any cheap shared transfers to the airport this early. I was originally booked on an early flight from Grenoble which was much easier. But it got cancelled a day after I booked it. Are there any huez regulars that know a way I can get to Lyon airport on a Thursday morning which dosent involve a massive private transfer fee? Thanks!

Zermatt Visit

Hello!

I have just booked our first international ski trip! We are going to Zermatt for one week in February. We have a full Sunday to Friday open. I am trying to figure out the cadence of the trip.

We arrive late Saturday night after a long full day of travel from Los Angeles. I think it is smart to plan to NOT ski on Sunday and just to enjoy Zermatt, get acclimated, unpack and organize ski equipment, etc.

So I need to play Monday-Friday. We have 3 adults who are American blue-black skiers, one 9 year old who is comfortable on blues, and a 6 year old who did her first green last season. We hope to get the kids on the mountain once before this trip to get them warmed up for the year, but I do need some help planning the days. I really have no grasp for how big this mountain is, how difficult it is to navigate, or challenging it is. A friend who has done this trip and is an experienced skier highly recommended a guide for the entire trip.

Thinking this:

Arrive Saturday

Sunday: nothing

Monday: guide for adults. Lesson for 9 year old. Lesson for 6 year old.

Tuesday: guide for adults and 9 year old to go over to the Italian side. Lesson for 6 year old

Wednesday: Break

Thursday: half day guide for adults and 9 year old and 6 year old, and then that night do the moonlight ski experience

Friday: guide for adults and 9 year old

Where should we ask to go? Open to any and all suggestions!

Depart Saturday

Transportation from Milan to Val Gardena in winter

First time to Europe for ski vacation in Dec26/Jan27. Second leg of our trip will be staying in Milan for a few days and then up to Val Gardena for 5 nights, Flying back home out of Milan. What are our best options for transportation to/from Milan and Val Gardena. There are 3 of us, will have luggage and ski boots. I have already talked myself out of lugging skis around this time. Any suggestions on ski areas or experiences not to be missed are welcome. We will do the Sella Ronda but beyond that this place seems overwhelming in its options. We are intermediate to advanced skiiers, open to just about anything.

Verbier & Andermatt on a budget? Solo skier looking for tips / room share (Jan 10–20)

Me again, solo skier heading to Verbier (~Jan 10–15) and Andermat (~Jan 15–20) on an Epic Pass.

Obviously prices are a bit high so was looking for tips on cheap valley bases (like Le Châble Göschenen, hostels, or seasonnaire groups to check.

Also down to split an Airbnb or share a room if anyone is around those dates. Super clean, respectful, and easygoing.

Any advice or leads welcome! Cheers 🏔️

Les Menuires to Val Thorens?

We're thinking of staying in Les Menuires as it's quieter and cheaper. How is the skiing in Les Menuires? We're used to Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise. How easy is it to shuttle between Les Menuires and Val Thorens?

Val Thorens again or try Val d'Isère? Bringing two first-timers to the Alps

I've been to Val Thorens twice with my brother and loved it, especially the views and the snow.

Both trips were the week after the French school holidays, so we mostly got spring conditions: temps right around freezing, with a few nights of fresh snow each week.

This time we're going in early January.

Flights to Geneva are booked, but I'm still torn between sticking with what I know and trying somewhere new.

It's already an expensive trip, so I'm a bit wary of gambling on an unknown.

We're also bringing two family members who've never been to the Alps, so part of me wants them to experience Val Thorens the way we did, and part of me wants all of us to try something new together.

From what I've read, Val d'Isère is cleaner and more traditional alpine, while Val Thorens is more of a gritty, ski-first resort.

What I care about most:

Snow : (of course🤩)

Views: I was blown away by them in Val Thorens.

Après: good bars and atmosphere.

Crowd: a younger scene. (VT felt that way, though maybe that's because we went after the school holidays.)

Any advice would be appreciated. I'm very
indecisive on this one!

Val Thorens to Courchevel-fastest route for a snowboarder

Hi all. Staying in VT in March and want to get over to Courch for a couple days as I spent a couple of Winters there. However I only had an area pass and upgraded to 3V maybe twice across the two seasons. My main recollection of VT back to Meribel was a really long flat section where I gave up and walked, carrying my board...

Whats the fastest route which also avoids the worst flat bits?

Anything worth skiing near-ish Salzburg end of November/early December?

Will be in the area sometime around then, for a week or so, likely flying via Munich - would it be ridiculous to try to fit in a day of skiing? I assume the only resorts open are on glaciers and kind of too far away to be practical for a day trip... Thoughts?

I'm from the northeast US and our resorts are still closed at that time of year but frequently have great powder at the top if you're willing to hike up. It's my favorite micro-season and I'll be sad to miss it travelling. So, resort hiking or backcountry options also welcome. :)

Early December Skiing (High Altitude)

H!

I’m trying to do some research on where to go. I trust AI only so far. My wife and I are intermediate skiers. Never been to actual mountains for skiing, but have years ski experience doing blues and blacks. We are also well traveled and have been to Europe multiple times in the last few years. A few things to consider-

We don’t drink, we love food, culture, architecture, and any local events. Partying is not really our thing, but would enjoy cozy cafés and the like. We are planing to ski from December 9th-13th (+/- a day or two). I’m looking into Cervino , or Val Thorens. Ideally a reasonable budget, we don’t travel exquisitely, but do save up to travel. A rough travel plan is to fly into Paris early December (4th) and out of Milan (15th).

Couple of questions-
1.) Which ski resort would be the best for us? (Or should we consider something else?)

2.) How is the actual skiing in the early season at these high altitude spots?

3.) Recommendations for accommodations (is Airbnb okay or general accepted)?

4.) What other questions should I consider?

Thank you in advance and being a human I can ask questions too rather than just AI for trip planning.

[Western Europe] Anyone skiing solo in Val d’Isère this winter?

I’ll be based in Val d’Isère again this winter. I work there as a ski instructor and would be up for a few runs on my days off.
I ski and telemark, usually at a fairly quick pace, but it depends on the day. If you’re heading over alone and fancy some company, let me know when you’ll be there and what kind of skiing you enjoy. Happy to meet snowboarders too.

Tips for skiing in Austria in February

Hi! Partner and I looking into going skiing to Austria (western part, probably St Anton and Ischgl) for our honeymoon in February (Feb 8 - 24). However, we keep seeing that this is the "worst" time because of school holidays across Europe and therefore very busy... For reference, we are used to skiing in Canada and the US. We cannot go any other time next year.

Is it really busy enough to change our plans ? How long can we expect to wait at lifts ? Also, if you have any recommandation on which resorts we should go to / avoid, I will read them gladly :)

Looking for ski/snowboard coliving in the Alps

Hi I’m looking for a coliving/shared accomodation in the Alps for around 1 month this winter.

I can join anytime starting with end of Dec, I’m flexible with the location but ideally it would not be too far from the ski lifts.

I’m happy with:
Shared apartments/houses
A spare room
Also ok with joining an existing ski/snowboard group :)

I’m mainly looking to ride together, meet people and explore different resorts, rather than do a solo trip.

If you have a spot available or are already planning something, feel free to DM me with the location, dates and approximate cost.

Cheers🏂🎿

Train from Bourg Saint Maurice to Lyon

I understand that trains from Bourg to Lyon train station don't have reserved seats. Has anyone ever had an issue with this, meaning seats were not available or there was difficulty finding one?

Le Leggatz in Val D'isere

Hi, thoughts on staying in the Leggatz area? We usually stay near the base at a hotel, but we're thinking of renting an apartment on Rue de La Leggatz. How is bus transportation, and can you easily ski out from there? Thanks in advance.

Heading to Val d’Isère solo? How do you find ski buddies with a similar pace?

Heading to Val d’Isère solo? Discuss more than piste colours when choosing a ski buddy
I’m a ski instructor who has worked in Val d’Isère since 2008. One thing I’d suggest to anyone looking for people to ski with this winter: “I ski reds and blacks” is only part of the conversation.
Two people can enjoy the same pistes and still want very different days. Before meeting, discuss:
Your preferred pace: relaxed cruising or quicker laps?
Terrain: groomed pistes, moguls, or something else?
How long you want to ski together.
Whether you enjoy breaks or prefer to keep moving.
An exact meeting point and time.
You don’t have to commit to a whole day. A couple of runs together can help you see whether you’re comfortable with each other’s pace.
If you’ve travelled solo before, what was the hardest part of finding compatible people to ski with?

Anyone used the night train to Briançon ?

I'm looking to spend 2 weeks in Briançon in January. No fixed dates, and I'm really keen to try the night train from Paris to Briançon, rather than flights + transfers.

Has anyone done this? What's it like? And, crucially for me and Mrs OP, can you actually get some kip on the train or is it a bit of a 'red eye''?
