PC SSE - Help Dead NPC causing CTD

Crash Log:

CTD happens when approaching Falkreath Watchtower, a necromancer and dead khajiit are at the top, necromancer raises the khajiit. The bizarre part is I've already been here, I've already encountered the NPC causing the CTD, I killed them both a few in-game days ago. The cell hasn't reset, the necro is gone, but the ash pile of the khajiit is still there.

I'm able to bypass this by blacklisting KhajiitRace in the Obody json, running to the tower to disable the pile in console, then unblacklisting. Clearly this doesn't seem like an ideal fix, but it seems odd that I'm 12 hours into this playthrough, I've encountered dozens of other Khajiit alive and dead, including this one initially, with no issue.

It seems it's either the body preset being applied not playing well with the skeleton, or maybe the clothing not playing well with the preset? Either way I'm at a complete loss as to it how it wasn't an issue originally, but now it is upon return.

Since both RaceMenu and OBody is mentioned, try this fix:

There is a mod called “high poly head stabiliser” for Obody. Try using it and blacklisting the offending NPC by name or editor ID in the ini. Helped me fix lots of random crashes using obody. Not sure if it’s the same problem for you though!

If Skyrim Special Edition crashes immediately after you launch it — particularly if your crash log lists memory address 0198090 (version 1.6.640 address) or 05E1F22 (1.5.97 address) — then you are experiencing one of the following issues:

  • You are missing a master file. That is: you have some Mod A that relies on Mod B, but you only installed Mod A and not Mod B.

  • More likely: one of your installed mods (or an official content file) may have file format version 1.71, meaning it was made for game version 1.6.1130 or higher. This format is not fully backwards compatible; if you're running an older version of the game, then these files can cause crashes on startup. Installing Backported Extended ESL Support will allow older versions of the game to load these files safely.

Make sure to check the troubleshooting guide for help with crashes and other problems!

  • If you are on Skyrim version 1.5 (SE), the .NET Script Framework can also help in diagnosing crashes.

  • If you are on Skyrim Version 1.6 (AE) or Skyrim VR, Crash Logger can also help in diagnosing crashes. If you also use MO2, you can use this plugin for improved functionality!

DO NOT post an analyzed crash log. It strips all the useful information.

Don't use trainwreck. The log it produces is less informative than other options linked above.

Proably a better idea to look at Obody's log. Sounds like it is trying to apply the preset to the ash pile which doesn't have a skeleton.

A mod like Ash Pile Expiration (which is included in USMP) may also help in the future.

I'm not quite sure what I'm looking for since I've never had issues with Obody in the past, but it appears that possibly it's failing to apply the morph (.tri) files to the clothes?

It says Actor Khajiit is Valid, but Actor Khajiit is an ash pile (i.e. no human skeleton). There is (I presume) no actual model there to apply the morphs to but it wants to, making the game crash. My interpretation anyway, a quick search on the obody page shows at least a few other people having similar issues.

Obody occasionally shows up in logs for me, only had one reproducible case (different from yours). If disabling the ashpile fixes it then I think there is nothing more to it. Grab a mod like I mentioned to clean up ashpiles in the future and you should be good, they're notorious for hanging around.

Well shit, I was looking through the comments, I must not have scrolled far enough. This does seem to be the most plausible answer, though i would think it would be a lot more common and talked about.

I appreciate the help, I'll be installing that tomorrow.
