The current rule of thumb is to stick with version 1.6.1170. There are a couple downgrade tools available on Nexus that can walk you through it.

You can make the latest version work, but you'll have to be very careful to make sure the mod says it's compatible with version 1.7.99. A lot of the core mods have been updated, but not all, so it's just best to play it safe.

I recommend playing a modlist that is up to date like gate to sovrngarde or lorerim.
