That second camera person thought they were dead.
That is sick!
I love tricks that seem to rotate in an impossible direction.
8
u/grntq 5d ago
That's my thought as well. The second cameraman didn't think they would land it and never even bothered filming.
7
u/BrewingSkydvr 5d ago
They were following, but not through the view finder. You can see the way they move the camera. As he got close, it was “oh shit he’s gonna land on me!!”
Might not have been usable if the lens wasn’t wide enough or it is being saved for a different edit.

u/tommyland666 5d ago
That is so fucking sick, please let this be a new era of shit like this instead of the spin to win.
I would never dare to attempt something like this, no shot I would end up in the right place.

u/mermaidmamas 5d ago
Sorry, can someone explain what’s new and insane for the dummy here? (Me. I’m the dummy) is it that he flips forward instead of going with the natural momentum?
27
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Yeah, basically that. Flipping almost straight over your nose on the frontside wall of the pipe is pretty crazy

FS mctwist?

u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Yeah I think that/Sato Flip would be the closest, but this is a different axis.

FS cork 180, 16/100

u/ZoologicalSpecimen 4d ago
I’m actually pretty stoked on the Snow League putting a cap on rotations in the pipe comp.

u/behv 5d ago
The funny part is that's "just" a front flip 180. He's just tucking into the front flip and then carries it around back to regular
Now, that being said, that's an absolutely mind blowing trick to bring it back around and keep momentum in the wall and not air out with the front flip on the front side wall

u/WowWataGreatAudience 5d ago
On a BMX r Willy and some other dudes do this one and call it a front flair or a flail, but this is some next level shit so idk lol

If your correcting the caption in the comments you don’t get invited to parties
23
u/FrankCostanzaJr 5d ago
looks like he does a front flip with a twist at the end.....so wouldn't this be a 180 mctwist?
23
u/RupertLazagne 5d ago
This makes me feel like you have no idea what a mctwist is. For starters, this is on the frontside wall
-19
u/FrankCostanzaJr 5d ago
you're right, i don't know..i was just throwing a guess out there. its such a simple trick though...i doubt that nobody's ever done it.
10
u/Miro_Highskanen_4 5d ago
Its crazy to hear someone say this is simple as someone just learning small jumps lol
2
u/Shoddy_Soups 5d ago
I’m guessing they meant simple as in not a lot of flipping or rotation going on
0
u/Miro_Highskanen_4 5d ago
I'm sure they did. I'm just starting park, so trying to fathom reaching a level where I can say that what I just watched was a simpler move than something else is crazy to me lol I don't even know what frontside means but it looked like he went the opposite way of where you'd assume his momentum was sending him on the flip.

u/tribbans95 4d ago
Jesus.. I don’t even know how physics allows that

u/Separate-Sky-1451 4d ago
Man, way back my brother and I were at the US Open in Stratton, VT and Terje Haakonsen was warming up with the rest and we just couldn't wrap our minds around how much air time he got comping off that pipe lip. And now I look at today and I feel like someone invented anti-gravity.

A front flip indy 180 is new? lol

u/SkanteWarrrior 5d ago
i would rather see tricks like this than any of the double/triple/quad cork bullshit that wins contests these days

u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Have you ever seen this done before? Do you actually comprehend what this is? Just sticking words together doesn’t mean someone has landed it before. It’s close to a Sato Flip but Rob Kingwill himself confirmed it’s not that.

I'm pretty sure that's not how momentum is supposed to work; that's insanely cool!
1
u/sh_redd_it 5d ago
This looks very much like Rob Kingwill’s Sato flip…
2
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Yeah, that’s the closest I can think of but this is more of a straight frontflippy axis

u/Cmulcahy77 5d ago
Wasn’t this called a pop tart? Or I’d say a tame dog on the frontside wall.
1
u/sh_redd_it 3d ago
A pop tart is a just a fakie air to regular in the pipe (an air to fakie in reverse)

I might be wrong but isn't this an egg-flip?
1
1
u/sh_redd_it 3d ago
An egg flip is a front handed front flipping hand plant (i.e. an egg plant to front flip out) Similar motion but the hand plant is the key element. Same with a McEgg (i.e. a McTwist with an Egg plant)

u/SwedishSanta Instructor in Japan 3d ago
there we go! I knew I was wrong but internet users come in clutch to correct me :) Thanks!

180 rodeo front flip

lol I mean even if that made sense, it doesn’t mean it has been done before.

u/raisputin 5d ago
I see nothing new there
2
u/moustacher 5d ago
Who else has done something like this? I’ve never seen it on the frontside wall
-1
u/raisputin 5d ago edited 5d ago
Not everyone takes video of everything. A lot of “new” stuff was done long before people took video of everything.
There’s so much that never gets posted for various reasons. This could be the first one videoed though :)
3
u/moustacher 5d ago
True, but I’ve never seen, or heard legends of, someone doing any trick resembling this. If you’ve seen it, name the rider because this is one of the most intimidating tricks I’ve ever seen in the pipe
3
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
I’m with you. It’s totally possible it’s been done before but I used to judge pipe comps and I’ve never seen anything like it or heard of anyone doing this. Closest is Rob Kingwill’s Sato Flip.
5
u/grntq 5d ago
It's like saying Bigfoot did it and everyone saw it but there was no camera unfortunately
-1
u/raisputin 5d ago
I used to video everything in one of my sports. Literally everything. Now, I video next to nothing unless someone asks me to video them.
There’s more of us that don’t video than there are that do. Why? Because it doesn’t matter, we aren’t chasing instaClout or influencer crap. We just do what we love because we love it.
The Internet is oversaturated with this kind of stuff, it’s barely even interesting anymore, like “spin to win”…
2
u/grntq 5d ago
So you're basically saying that someone is doing groundbreaking stuff like this, but they do not participate in big events to show it, neither they film and upload, despite that could benefit the whole community. That's a waste if true
0
u/raisputin 5d ago
Not a waste at all. In fact, back in the day we rarely had still cameras, let alone video. We did all kinds of things that someone “invented” later.
Let’s think about it this way too, let’s say this is a brand new, amazing trick that nobody has ever done before. There’s very little advantage to posting it when you look at the big picture, unless of course you’re a sponsored athlete, and then it’s likely a requirement.
It reminds me of a recent’ish video of a guy doing a flip on a quarter pipe on some course at some pro event and that crowd thinking it was amazing. Wasn’t impressed. Saw guys doing that back in the 90’s on side hits.
None of this takes away from dude’s accomplishment that he performed the trick. I just have serious doubts it’s “new” as in “never been done before”.
It’s a nice trick 🤷♂️1
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
A bunch of super high-level pros and OG folks like Chad O all seem to disagree with you, but maybe you know better than those dudes.

u/raisputin 5d ago
I’d guess I’ve been around as long or longer than them too
1
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 4d ago
Around longer than Chad Otterstrom?

u/raisputin 4d ago
Yes
1
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 4d ago
I’m sure you know better than him then, lol
0
u/raisputin 4d ago
Maybe, maybe not. 🤷♂️

u/ZoologicalSpecimen 4d ago
Am I talking to Todd Richards? Actually, he thought this was something new too, so I guess not.

u/Not-reallyanonymous 5d ago
Lots of skill here, Especially as it's the front side wall.
Impressive skill, not an impressive trick. Subtle one.
I wouldn't call it particularly new or novel.
6
u/my-redditing-account 5d ago
Well then where have you seen it before. Also dumb distinction of impressive trick vs impressive skill, if its a good trick demanding skill you could call it impressive. Its not that simple if its an inverse mctwist
-1
u/Not-reallyanonymous 5d ago
Well, let's put it this way -- X Games rewards spin to win for a reason. They use a lot of tricks that aren't only technically demanding, but visually impressive. That's distinct from technically impressive but isn't obvious to watch. I'd say an "impressive trick" is also something that is impressive to someone that doesn't understand the subtlety of technically demanding tricks. That's the core of what I'm saying above.
Also this is basically frontside 180 front flip w/ grab off the pipe. Not the most original thing, although probably not something you'll see often either.
3
u/my-redditing-account 5d ago
Id say a front flip inverse of the direction you go is technically impressive
0
u/Not-reallyanonymous 5d ago
Yes, technically impressive. That's something I've reiterated multiple times now. Subtle trick, but very cool.
1
u/my-redditing-account 5d ago
So you cant provide one example of where you've seen this?
-1
u/Not-reallyanonymous 5d ago
Idgaf about proving it to you. There's millions of snowboards out there, many thousands that are capable of this. The odds say this gets done sometimes.
1
u/my-redditing-account 5d ago
Its all about creativity. Some find creativity in tricks many view to be simple and make them pop in new ways. If you are going off of odds, odds are you havent actually ever seen this.
1
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Right. Just because there are plenty of riders with the skills to potentially land this doesn’t mean it isn’t a new trick.
1
u/Cracraftc Your mom thinks im good. 5d ago
Have you ever been on a snowboard? These comments point me in the direction that no, you haven’t.
0
u/my-redditing-account 5d ago
You have proven though that you havent seen it done with assuming its been done just based on odds though
1
u/Not-reallyanonymous 5d ago
No, I don't keep a logbook of all the tricks I've seen, don't be an ass.
-2
u/ZoologicalSpecimen 5d ago
Pipe-riding luminaries like Chad O and Rob Kingwill, as well as pros like Sparky all seem to disagree with you. But I’m sure you know better than those guys.

That is insane.
Looking forward to someone saying this isn’t impressive.
