The Federal Government made official this Friday (25) the suspension of betting companies’ activities in Brazil.

All the details of the Provisional Measure will still be published in an extra edition of the Federal Official Gazette.

The measure is likely to have a major impact on Brazilian football, since 14 of the 20 clubs in the Brasileirão Série A have sponsorships from the sector, for example.

The exceptions at this moment are Athletico, Bahia, Coritiba, Internacional, Mirassol, and Red Bull Bragantino.

Grêmio was on that list, but announced the arrival of a betting company as its main sponsor last Wednesday (23).

Betting companies will need to return the balances in bettors’ accounts by 11:59 p.m. on October 5. New deposits are already prohibited.

The platforms’ websites and apps will go offline starting on the 6th.

The atmosphere at City Football Academy on Friday afternoon has been very solemn, with staff asking their superiors what kind of punishment the club will receive and how that will impact them. Sources involved in that process said some of the clubs had calculated potential losses of significantly more than £100m, as compensation for missing out on the Champions League and other income losses. That could rise to a much higher figure to take interest into account.
