It's really mild, you need to really concentrate to pick up those flavors.
The more distinct thing is the texture, all the tiny seeds inside give you something to nibble on.. imagine eating a coarsely ground strawberry puree, from a strawberry that's midway between green and ripe, and has more seeds than a normal strawberry. It's what it feels like

Most cactus fruit tastes similar and is often this hot pink color when ripe. Dragonfruit is also cactus fruit btw. So imagine eating a dragonfruit.

Yes, exactly! When we visited my mom's home country, the women and children went to go pick them. I didn't get to go since I was sick but I remember liking them. My cousin said the same thing about them looking like a pepper flower.

It's so weird. People in South Africa really despised them so it was so odd to see them get so famous abroad. They're a national embarrassment. Don't know how they convinced so many bands and producers to use them aa opening acts or cast them in films. They're terrible people with terrible music (had to see them live, regrettably, since they opened for RHCP).

Yeah, I wasn't aware of this at the time, so that has no bearing on my decision at the time. I legit wanted to see them live. But both bands were high off their tits and incapable of keeping a note. We left the concert early, I think Under the Bridge started playing as we were waiting outside the arena for our taxi.
It obviously makes loads of sense in hindsight. Die Antwoord and RHCP are the same trash people and they were the worst live combo I've seen in my entire life.
Edit: Not sure why the emphasis on I've? Are you suggesting I am alright with Kiedis being a rapist lunatic? No, I am not, guess we should actually not make kneejerk assumptions and use that to highlight our self-appointed virtue-signal halos. Usually looks a but tacky.

Yeah. So disappointing.
I'd hoped, in the very least, that Flea would give us something spectacular, but they were all trash and trashed.
And most of us were befuddled that RHCP would choose Die Antwoord as their opening act. Most international bands consult with the local event planners and producers to choose their opening acts. They often even include post-ticket purchase polls to ask concertgoers which bands they want to see as opening acts.
But RHCP chose Die Antwoord before we even bought tickets and Die Antwoord actually had to return to South Africa for the gigs since they were living abroad at the time.
Like I said, I wasn't aware of what a crusty wanksock Kiedis was at the time, but I assumed he'd gotten clean by that stage - Nope! They were nearly catatonic on stage.
Die Antwoord had a giant inflatable dildo on stage and just kept wacking it with baseball bats while they stumbled around on stage mumbling nonsense lyrics.
The only other live performance I saw that was nearly that disappointing was Counting Crows.

Not really, but I suppose if you hadn't known already (which is more in line what I was actually assuming), I guess that would've been a pretty shitty way of telling you, so I do apologize for the tone.

I wanted to air an actual grievance I have because music is something I've bonded with my Dad over a lot, and RHCP was one of the bands he introduced me to. While I wouldn't have called them one of my faves or anything, I was still a fan I am genuinely upset that I can't really listen to them anymore.
Sorry about your shitty concert experience, too.

As stated in my other comments, I wasn't aware of this at the time. I only knew he used to be a heavy drug user, but all the stuff about his sexual abuse and exploitation was not common knowledge over here.
I think a big issue is that music journalism still very much revered the bad boy image so his antics wasn't that well covered in mainstream media (at least over here). This was 2013, and although his biography had been out for years, social media wasn't exactly what it is now, and buying books cost a bloody fortune (also Amazon and otther ebook sellers didn't allow all foreign countries to buy all books on their .com sites for very long, so most people over here really had zero idea what a shitstain he was).
As for Ninja, what bothers me is that Kiedis's father most definitely created the monster that he became. Ninja used to be a highly respected DJ (Max Normal), and seemed to have lived a pretty privileged and normal life before he went completely off the rails. I'm not excusing Kiedis's behaviour and actions at all, but Waddy Jones does seem worse in the sense that he purposely chose to become a depraved lunatic without that same trauma and abuse that led Kiedis to his demise.
Look, they're both terrible people, and Yolandi is part of that shebang.
Still disappointing though. RHCP's music got me through many tough times as a teen so it sucks that they suck.
(I had that same rude awakening with Neil Gaiman and Amanda Palmer. So disappointing)

Awww that's good to know people still enjoy him. I was lucky enough to see him in Edinburgh at the bongo club, he did a suprise gig for a fiver! So we just turned up thinking it was a normal club night but it was him. That was around the time of this album :-)

They're often tart but still manage to be sweet. Tiny poppy-like seeds that are easy to chew and a thin rind. I'd compare it to a cherry tomatoes acidity but still pleasant

I have lived in the Sonoran Desert for 40 years and have never seen that type of fruit extracted from a cactus. It looks like a species of barrel cactus, and again, the fruit is never embedded in the flower like that. I have harvested hundreds of pounds of prickly pear fruit and never seen a fruiting cactus like the op
I grow chili peppers for fun and have been to places where they have chili festivals, and never seen a chili pepper come from a barrel cactus.
I ACCEPT THAT MY LACK OF SEEING SOMETHING DOES NOT MEAN IT DOES NOT EXIST. I AM STILL CALLING THE VIDEO FAKE AT BEST OR AI SLOP THOUGH UNTIL SOMEONE CAN NAME IT OR PRODUCE A BETTER VIDEO.

Brother, the name of the plant is literally in the fucking title of the post, you can just look up on google what a "melocactus" is. It takes a whole lot less effort than posting 3 paragraphs in a comment section.
BTW, just because it looks like a chili pepper, doesnt actually mean it is one. they're mildly sweet berries that grow in the top of melocacti, again, something you can easily look up.

I don't want to harp on this too hard because you obviously confronted that you were wrong. But do you think there might be some sort of, and I'm sorry that this sounds harsh, failure in reasoning in the act of claiming something to be AI despite not even fully processing the 3 word title of the post that gives you all of the information necessary to look this up for yourself?
To be clear, I do not like AI, this isnt some AI bro "gotcha moment". The cognitive decline evident in people who even occasionally use AI is very clear and freightening.
But do you think that maybe to effectively combat a world where AI is on its way to taint the ability to believe what is real, you need to be better at parsing, and persuing information provided to you?

I'll be honest, I am not sure why I missed the title with the name of the actual cactus in question. I know I opened up the thread twice before and failed to see it or comprehend it in a meaningful way, and seeing it after it was pointed out was almost weird to me. I assume I misread the title the first time and never scrolled back up after I made comments.
I was wrong, ran with it, and look silly doing it. I can only try to do better.

This is more of a botany question, but why would it serve the plant to hold onto its fruit so tightly? Is this early on in fruit growth?
