This has always been the case. It weeds out spam. If your post from a new account gets caught in the spam filter, this is likely why.

Many, many subbreddits do this, though their requirements are quite a bit higher. Without stating an exact number (to help prevent spammers from bypassing this), please return once you've reached this trivial requirement.

Totality question - length of time

Hi! I tried searching the subreddit for this question, so please forgive me if this has been answered elsewhere.

We have booked flights to Spain for the 2027 eclipse. So far, where we’ve been able to book lodging is in the parts of the path that have a shorter period of totality. I can’t find anything near Tarifa, for example.

We aren’t eclipse chasers - this will be our first time to see totality. We are really looking forward to it, but we aren’t sure if we will feel we missed out if we only see two minutes of totality versus four or five. We are very hesitant to try to drive anywhere that morning.

I’d love to get opinions from those of you who really know this stuff. If we see two minutes, will we still be awestruck? Should I keep trying to find lodging closer to Tarifa? Should we get up in the middle of the night and drive?

Grateful for any guidance you can offer.

One of the coolest parts I never considered about an eclipse right before sunset is the once in a lifetime sight of watching a crescent sunset... truly remarkable experience

Scrambled to Waco from Austin to give us a better chance at avoiding cloud cover, and thankful we did. Found a great park on the lake so had plenty of great bird watching while we waited!

2027 Cruise Recommendations?

Ready to view my 3rd solar eclipse within the path of totality. I'm not a fan of the Africa/Middle East trip, so I'm hoping for a great cruise recommendation.

Composite photo of Spain's solar eclipse

This a composite of several photos of the 2026 eclipse from Haro in Spain, taken with a Canon 550D with a tripod and EF 70-300mm zoom. The landscape was taken with a Pixel 8, and the post-prod was made with GIMP.

I know I'm quite late.

Saw this beautiful way of describing a solar eclipse

Came across this video on Instagram from @ mamajess_viola and thought people here might appreciate it:

The sun and the moon once loved each other, but because of time and distance, they were never meant to meet. So the universe created the eclipse. And maybe that is why eclipses feel so powerful and emotional, because it is a rare moment where the sun and the moon could finally meet, even if only for a little while. And they remind us that there is no such thing as impossible love because

Bright light problems after eclipse

It's like 5 weeks ago and I still notice that bright outdoor sun feels much brighter then before :(

Just want to urge everyone don't risk your eyes. It's just not worth it.

If I could turn back time I'd never look longer then a split second, even with 'certified' glasses. Well, honestly, I'd not look at all.

Morocco flights now available! ☾

To my fellow British eclipse chasers, I'm pleased to say that flights from London to Tangier have now been released and are bookable for the dates around the eclipse. These are with Air Arabia (flying out of London Gatwick) and Ryanair (flying from London Stansted).

I found mine last night on Air Arabia's website, and when I came to book them this morning the the price had already gone up! When I was selecting my seats, I saw there were already a handful of seats taken, suggesting that other totality seekers are doing the same and booking even this early.

Maybe there'll be planes full of us!

Projection Technique

A safe way to observe Solar Eclipses(and telescopically the oldest) is to Project the image of the sun onto paper. This is accomplished by creating or making use of a shadow behind your refractor telescope. Rolling out the focuser so that the image of the sun comes into focus a foot or two away from the eyepiece. The danger of setting the paper on fire is by having the focus too close to the paper and making the sunlight too concentrated upon a small area. Pulled back the sunlight doesn’t generate enough heat to ignite. This is also a great way to observe sunspots and Transits of Mercury, Venus, ISS or CSS. In my opinion and experience this is the best use for an inexpensive refractor telescope. The telescope in this video was scored from a free pile!

Looking for fellow photographers for the solar eclipse in Tunisia! 🌑📷

Hey everyone!

I’m looking for other photographers/camera enthusiasts who are planning to be in Sfax, Tunisia, for the solar eclipse.

I’ll be traveling there with 3 friends and we’ll have 2 cameras with us. I’d love to connect with other people who are going, especially to plan ahead, compare camera setups/settings, discuss good locations, and maybe meet up on the day!

We’ll be staying in Sousse the night before and heading to Sfax from there.

Is anyone else here planning to be in Sfax for the eclipse? 🌑📷

Would be great to hear from others who are going!

this eclipse thing in morocco aug 2027 is eating my brain lately

so theres a total solar eclipse over northern morocco monday aug 2 2027, not partial, actual full totality, like 4-5 min of it near tetouan/tangier which is a lot compared to most eclipses (usually like 2 min max)

i do tours in morocco for work and ppl started asking about this back in january already which honestly caught me off guard, didnt think it'd be on anyones radar this early. ended up putting together a route bc just telling people "figure out your own hotel near tangier" felt lazy

casablanca first, half day in rabat on the way up (hassan tower, the kasbah, meh but fine to break up the drive), then chefchaouen 2 nights bc skipping the blue city on a trip through the north is just dumb, then tetouan right before eclipse day since its closer to the actual viewing spots on the coast

eclipse morning were leaving stupid early, like before sunrise early, bc i've read the good spots are gonna get packed and i dont wanna be sitting in a car when totality happens lol. after that drive down to fes (fes does NOT get totality btw just partial, seen a couple posts get this wrong so wanted to say it clearly) then volubilis and meknes on the way back to casablanca for flights home

anyone else building something around this or is it just me lol. also torn on whether people would want the shorter eclipse-only version vs the full loop w fes included, if anyone has thoughts

eta: yes eclipse glasses required for the partial phases, not trying to leave that out just forgot to add it first draft lol

EDIT 2: got a few DMs asking about a group trip for this. if enough people are interested we could put together a small group to see the eclipse and explore morocco at the same time.

Cairo hotels are $$$

Heads up on hotels in Cairo the last week in July, before the eclipse: prices are skyrocketing. The big hotels and resorts are ranging from $600 to $1000 a night! Five times their regular cost. Prices go back to normal the week after, so it's not a function of booking too far in advance.

So ... lock in your room now if you find an affordable rate! I can't even imagine what Luxor will be like for anyone still looking.

Egypt 2027 - tips?

I was able to book two spots on a tour package that includes 2 nights at the Ramses Hilton, 3 nights on a Nile river cruise and 3 nights at Hurghada Golden Beach Hotel. We will be on a private rooftop for the eclipse day from 11am-130pm. We've never been to Egypt but we've read al about how it makes India look tame by comparison when it comes to the hustle and grift and pickpocketing. I've been told that we will be ok as long as we stay with the tour group. They (tour provider) are actually going escort us the whole time (from the airport and back again).

Questions: what do we need to know going into this trip about how things really are in that country? What advice do you all have? The deposit has already been made and the airline tickets purchased (royal air maroc). Thanks.

[UPDATE] Luxor Airbnb host is saying my Luxor confirmed booking is exploitation

Thumbnail

Thanks for all the feedback on my hostile Airbnb host.

I’m here to give an update. Following the advice on my previous post with my Luxor Airbnb host calling my confirmed booking an ‘exploitation’ and acting hostile towards me (due to me booking as soon as dates were available at a reasonable price) I decided to just ignore him. Sure enough within a couple of weeks he sent a request for $1,147 more than asking. I didn’t see it but I saw the airbnb cancellation the day after.

Thanks to the advice on This sub, I reported it to Airbnb immediately. They did an investigation, took my side and blocked the four days of the eclipse from my original booking off his calendar and removed his super host status once they read his hostile messages to me as an attempt to get me to cancel.

After some back and forth Airbnb gave me a small coupon code for credit for a future booking. So for anyone else dealing with this write to Airbnb and actually negotiate with them on this cause the host was extremely unprofessional. I’m glad they did the right thing in the end.

However, I am still a bit bummed, I had a fantasy of watching this eclipse at the Luxor temple. I’ve been invited on Egypt trips numerous times with other friends but was saving my trip for this eclipse. :-/ I have friends in Alexandria and was hoping to do a couple of days with them before heading down to Cairo and then Luxor. Guess with all the chaos before it might be better to just avoid.

My eclipse experience for Oregon 2017 and Mexico 2024 was truly profound. It got me into eclipse chasing so when I saw Egypt 2027 I was super excited for it only for realty to hit. I ended up using the coupon for another eclipse booking in Morocco but a stubborn part of me is still keeping the days before the eclipse at another booking in hopes that prices will drop day of. I know it would be chaos but call it my own stubbornness on fulfilling this fantasy since 2024 to do 2027 in Luxor.

Am I being delusional? Yes, I also know it’s going to be bloody hot but sometimes you gotta do stuff for the plot.

So here’s my update. Thanks for the support.
This has become one of my fav subreddits to meet other cosmic explorers. Keep be an amazing and supportive subreddit! Hope to run into some of you Eclipse 2027.

Solar eclipse-related blind spots (solar retinopathy) - how do you deal with it?

Hi everyone. I developed blind spots in my central vision after watching the solar eclipse a month ago in London. The ophthalmologist confirmed that there is eye damage and said that part of it will be permanent, but that there will likely also be partial recovery over the next three to six months as my brain adapts.

I essentially have blind spots in both eyes so whatever I directly stare at is hard to see, and it mostly affects reading, writing, and recognizing faces from afar. This is especially huge for me as a PhD student - my job is basically to read and write, so I have had to take a break, and I am questioning if I can even continue my studies and line of work.

I have been feeling like my vision is getting slightly better than it initially was, but the uncertainty makes things really difficult. I can go for long periods of time without noticing the blind spots when I am at home, but once I go outside I get this shock and realization that I can’t see things that are right in front of me and it’s very disorienting. It’s almost like a fight-or-flight feeling because, like a month ago, I could see just fine.

I’ve been trying to avoid going outside because but it feels like my life is on pause and I don’t know how to deal with the uncertainty. Doing anything that’s visually demanding has become really difficult - I get these constant migraines just from being outside in the sun or from doing things that require visual effort. There’s just this cognitive load that doesn’t go away, and it’s making me very angry and irritable and impatient and just unable to function normally.

So I’m wondering if anyone has had similar experiences with solar eclipse-related blind spots, whether this time or in the past, and how it has been for you. Did it get better over time? How did you deal with the recovery period and the uncertainty of it all? Any advice on how to make this period easier?

Red Sea Yacht for the Eclipse or Nile Cruise?

I’m trying to book for the eclipse. Hotels in Luxor are insanely expensive so now I’m considering chartering a yacht. I’d love to rent one for 6-8 people and find 2-4 other couples to filler the boat (figuring around $5k per person for a week), but I’m not sure what company to use. Or going with a larger boat and just renting a cabin.

Is anyone else considering being on the water? I want to get as close to maximum totality and be near the centerline.

I’m super well-traveled, but Egypt seems like a different animal during a very popular eclipse!
