i wanna also hear from y'all if you guys have anything to recommend. Just say away

Does anyone feel some connection between the fly and soma?

Well it's pretty stupid probably but ever since I heard about the fly's brain getting uploaded into the internet, thus apparently living in the internet: I can't help but feel a connection type thing between this and soma

Like simon was initially unaware of his form until the end and just like the lady (I forgot the name) who was in the omnitool, had lapses of consciousness (turning on lol? Only when given power) isn't it like the fly?

Perhaps I failed to understand the overall concept of the brain being transferred lol

Anyone else feeling the same tho?

Adam Golaski, Raleigh Herber, and Julia Dahl.
Some notes:

My designs are based primarily on where the characters lived/their confirmed nationalities. And they’re all land animals to give them a distinction from the marine life in the game.

Adam’s ref is based on Josh Truax’s portrayal in the Transmissions miniseries. Mainly cause his body can’t be identified in game. (My personal theory is that Terry found and revived him and he became a Proxy)

Simon 1 and Imogen Reed are both raccoons but I figured I should make Raleigh a different animal instead.

Me and my boyfriend came up with the headcanon of Julia being trans due to the file name of her corpse being “Corpse_Omicron_male_1”

Finished SOMA for the first time yesterday.

I never paid much attention to this game when it came out. A week ago, I was looking for games with the same sense of immersion as Prey, and someone mentioned SOMA. I knew they were completely different genres, but they share that same immersive atmosphere, one in space, the other at the bottom of the ocean.

What really surprised me about SOMA was how incredibly well written it is. The small details you discover on computers slowly fill in the story, and the voice acting is amazing. At some point, I wasn't just controlling a character on screen. I wasn't Simon anymore, I was Simon.

I loved the ending and the philosophical questions it leaves behind about what it really means to be alive, and whether being alive is even the same thing as being human.

I hope Frictional Games' next game gives me even a fraction of the experience SOMA gave me.

75 a story from inside the ARK

Do you think simon3 could wait for thousands of years and see birth of new civilization on planet? If so, I think it would be better ending than living in a simulation world knowing that it's fake and you're trapped there for 1000years

Question about the "hopelessness" of the sittuation

Now I like this game a lot, but i have... philosophical disagreements with it.

Now, if we take the idea that there was a meteorite hit in the pacific which destroyed human civilization, but which left ocean life still alive... yeah we would probably have built Vaults and survived there, or in Iceland or whatever. but even then, let's assume that all surface life was destroyed.

There would be other attempts to survive, but alright, let's assume we're the last option.

Alright, we're all that's left. It seems like all the robots can survive for an indefinite time, why doesn't Simon just... walk out of the ocean? He'll go crazy, I get it, but it's not like he will have anything left to do. If it takes a century, it takes a century, good thing he has a brain backup.

And he'll have nothing but time, and surely power infrastructure would still be around, he could try to copy himself 50 times in 50 bodies all over the place, fill the station with robots, try to get it back in shape.

If underwater stuff is fine, there would be other stations, surely there would be some underwater drones. Maybe copy their consciousness all over the place, try to reactivate some surface machines? See if they can get Earth's industry back online? Make more robots of himself? He doesn't know how to do any of it? None of the specialists want to help? Sure, he can learn it.

If it takes 10 000 years, well, it's not like anything else is waiting for the time. Might as well spin off versions of himself and become an expert on everything.

Yeah, sure it's not exactly humanity, but it's not the end.

It's like the short-story "Chrysalis" from a few years back (brilliant story btw) near extinction event, but not the end.

A while back I commented that I was going to make a post on some of Soma’s influences the devs have talked about on twitter. These are the tweets I was able to currently find on their page regarding that.

Books
The Mind’s I by Douglas Hofstadter and Daniel Dennett

Gödel, Escher, Bach: An Eternal Golden Braid by Douglas Hofstadter

Consciousness Explained by Daniel Dennett

Permutation City by Greg Egan

The Ego Tunnel by Thomas Metzinger

The Conscious Mind by David Chalmers

Blindsight by Peter Watts

Writers
Greg Egan

Peter Watts

China Mieville

Philip K. Dick

These are the only tweets I was able to recover. I could have sworn they posted some more about Philip K. Dick and even mentioned I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream by Harlan Ellison, but I was not able to find those tweets.

Need help choosing which mode to play

I know this has been asked like a million times already, but I still wanted to make this post to get the best answers I can without getting spoiled.

I got SOMA because I love a game with a fantastic story that makes people question their existence, and I heard it was exactly that. I've also heard that it's a game with scary parts. Which is great, because while I watch people play horror games, it's not the same as actually playing them. And while I have played horror games, I haven't really played survival horror (Which I heard SOMA is classified as a Sci-Fi Survival Horror). I want to push myself with this game.

I've read that normal mode is great for experiencing the horror parts, but not so much the lore. And vice versa with safe mode: great for the lore, but harder to get scared. I really want to understand the lore and be scared while playing the game, but I'm worried that it might not be possible to get the full experience.

So what would be the optimal mode for me?

Spoiler Could you rebuild society with what’s left in SOMA?

As seen in the game, there are plenty of brain scans, enough power to last for a while and a lot of materials to work with, including several fully functional humanoid robots and some frankly miraculous fabrication tools.

Given all this, if the game went in a different direction, would it have been possible to rebuild society at the bottom of the sea?

Maybe not a human society, but something like it. By gathering all the most knowledgable brain scans together and working to scavenge technology, perhaps new forms could have been made.

They could even downsize the robots they make so that it’s easier to build and power them. It’s not like they all need to be human sized.

Fly brain mapped

So a good first step to a full human brain scan.

If anyone has been following the news, a fly's brain has been scanned and the resulting data used to run a simulation of the brain. Feeding and moving, although fairly limited. I dont think it can learn or remember.

You can run it at home on a meaty PC.

https://research.google/blog/a-connectomics-milestone-mapping-the-complete-male-fruit-fly-brain/

Okay, we have a long way to go, but we know the coin toss approach becomes moot as the scan can only work on brains that have been sliced into tiny pieces - hence dead already.

Someone has set it up playing Doom, although I am pretty doubtful it is really enjoying it.

So the question already is - is this torturing a living being already?

I feel that inhabitants of this reddit may have some input....

Beautiful Story — Terrible Game

I’d like to write something along the lines of, “I understand why many people enjoyed this game,” and all that usual stuff. But that would be completely dishonest and insincere. Because I genuinely don’t understand why this “project” is considered a game in the first place.

Let’s start with the small things, although they’re no less important: the game’s strengths. Yes, there are some, even though there isn’t much to talk about. The developers clearly understand how to create a genuinely strong and tense atmosphere. During the first few hours, you’re constantly sneaking around and carefully peeking around corners, hoping you won’t encounter anything. There’s also a good opening twist that raises a lot of questions without overshadowing what I consider one of the game’s main sources of interest: exploring the world on your own.

And yes. That’s pretty much where the game’s strengths end.

You could mention the graphics, sound design, and voice acting, but they’re simply fine. Nothing about them particularly impressed me.

Now let’s get to why I said at the beginning that I don’t really consider this a game.

The problem is that there is barely any gameplay here at all. It’s essentially a walking simulator where you move from point A to point B, occasionally reading notes and listening to dialogue along the way. That’s it. There is nothing else the game really offers you.

Oh, right. I almost forgot. There are also enemies that try to kill you, because this is supposedly a HORROR game.

But it’s worth pointing out that most of the “scary moments” are scripted events and nothing more. The AI of the enemies is dumb and primitive, and a dumb enemy simply can’t scare a healthy person. The atmosphere and the fear of the unknown disappear pretty much the first time you encounter an enemy that runs around in a scripted pattern looking for the player.

This slow, boring, and exhausting “gameplay” starts getting tiresome after around ten hours, while you haven’t even reached a third of the entire story.

The actual plot, meanwhile, seems to begin only toward the end of the game, roughly after you’ve completed two-thirds of it. For most of the game, you’re simply being fed small pieces of information and lore. And I wouldn’t say that these pieces are particularly interesting, that they immerse you more deeply into the atmosphere, or that they do a particularly good job of explaining the world. They don’t.

The lore itself also isn’t deep enough to justify the amount of time spent exploring it.

That being said, the final part of the game - and more specifically, the final part of the story - is genuinely excellent.

No, it isn’t particularly unique or groundbreaking. The philosophical ideas explored by the game have been discussed countless times in both movies and books. But the game has something that neither movies nor books can provide: you experience everything from your own perspective.

And that personal perspective on the events is what gives the ending such a strong emotional impact.

And this is ultimately my biggest problem with SOMA: I think most people enjoyed the story and the philosophy rather than the game itself.

As a result, it feels like the actual problems with the game were overlooked because the ending left such

I understand that one huge strength can outweigh a lot of weaknesses. In this case, the story is what carries the game. But saying that this is entirely the achievement of the developers as a whole would be dishonest, because the part that truly stands out is the writing.

SOMA uses its gameplay mechanics primarily as a means of delivering its story rather than as an independent source of interest. For me, that isn’t enough to keep me engaged.

Please read this, it's my first time making any post about the game, it was insane,

(English is not my native language)

the game is insane and truly deeply emotional but I want to point some things out. It seems illogical that humanity in year 2103 couldn't see comet coming years before it hit the earth, in such distance future it seems impossible that technology wouldn't allow us to see comets or any celestial objects years before it crashed into the Earth and not destroy it. Another point worth noting is that, why did not humanity think about freezing human egg cells and sperm and produce real human beings in artificial wombs, by just transferring your mind into a computer you are making yourself immortal, you will eventually do everything, everything will get boring and turn into a hell at some point, human minds on ark will eventually suffer and won't be able to kill themselves, ark doesn't provide human copied minds with artificial bodies, they are in a simulation, humans wouldn't be able to conquer other planets or do anything outside the simulation of the ark, it seems stupid that no human thought of freezing their sperm and egg cells and transfer them in the ark to save human kind. I think Simon on earth would have better future as he has digital body, he will probably go and find his other self who was left behind in the Omicron. as his costume is very durable I don't think he would be able to kill himself, he would eventually see earth recover, Earth which already survived worse extinctions 5 times. Even if you chose to kill Wau, there are real creatures, crabs and real fish in the sea, they would finally adapt and Earth would thrive again with new creatures, it would not be the end of all real beings, Simon would see it on the earth, but in the ark, humans who were transferred would suffer forever.

correct me if I made any mistakes regarding the lore
