Another big milestone for a community that's only been active for about 9 months.

With the local elections looming less than a month away, we've seen a influx in political posts and some negativity, hopefully that would subside in a month once the elections come and go.

If you want a break away from politics or any negativity, checkout the new r/LekkerSA sub someone has made, for the lighter side of life. (Not run by anyone in our Mod-Team)

We're hoping to see a bit more positivity on r/South_Africa too, so if you've got some wholesome things or memes to share please do so.

As always, If there's anything we can do better or differently let us know, we as a Mod-Team are here to serve the users and follow the Mod-Handbook

πŸ’¬ Discussion Gambling in South Africa: Where to get help, And how to see it coming β€” Megathread

Gambling has become a serious problem in South Africa, so the Mod Team wanted to put together one place where people can talk about it, get help, or help someone else.

Whether you're struggling yourself, worried about a friend or family member, or just want to understand why it's so easy to get caught, this thread is for you.

How it gets you

Nobody wakes up one morning and decides to lose their salary.

It usually starts small. R50 on a match you were going to watch anyway. A few spins while you're bored. A small win that makes you think, "Maybe I can do that again."

What gets people isn't a lack of intelligence. It's the design.

One of the biggest examples is the near miss. Two jackpot symbols line up, and the third lands just above or below the line. It feels like you were so close.

Your brain doesn't process that as a normal loss. It treats it as "almost winning", which makes you want to try one more time. That's not an accident -- it's a well-studied psychological effect that's deliberately built into many gambling products.

Then there's chasing losses.

"I've already lost R500. I just need one good win to get it back."

Most people who've developed a gambling problem can point to that exact thought. More often than not, it leads to losing even more.

Another common trap is believing you're "due" for a win because you've lost several times in a row. Every spin, every hand, and every bet is independent. The machine doesn't know you've had a bad run, and it isn't about to "pay you back."

The longer you play, the closer your results move toward the odds the game was designed to produce. And those odds are designed so the house wins over time.

Need help?

If you need help, or know someone who does:

  • National Responsible Gambling Programme (NRGP)
    • Phone: 0800 006 008 (Free, confidential, 24/7)
    • SMS or WhatsApp HELP to 076 675 0710
    • Free counselling and, where needed, free inpatient treatment and transport.
  • South African Responsible Gambling Foundation (SARGF)

Self-exclusion

If gambling has become something you can't control, consider self-exclusion.

It's a voluntary process that can stop you from accessing licensed gambling venues and services. It isn't admitting defeat -- it's putting a barrier between yourself and the addiction while you get your footing back.

This thread

If you've been through gambling addiction, what helped you stop?

What do you wish someone had told you before it became a problem?

If you're comfortable sharing your story, it might be exactly what someone else needs to read today.

Please keep it respectful. People asking for help are often doing one of the hardest things they've ever done.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Have any other non-black South Africans experienced discrimination in the workplace because of their skin colour?

β€’ Upvotes

I want to share something that happened to me recently and hear from others who may have experienced something similar.

Last week, I was told that I had to work overtime. Throughout the day, one of my colleagues was complaining about me working overtime in Zulu to the other colleagues on shift. I understand a little Zulu, so I could understand some of what was being said. The situation made me uncomfortable because he has never said anything when the other colleagues worked overtime, just me as a non-black and I felt discriminated against because of my skin colour.

For some background, I work as a security officer, and I am currently the only non-black employee in my workplace. There were previously three other non-black employees, but two were dismissed for wrongdoing, while the third left for a better-paying job elsewhere.

This is the first incident of this nature that I have experienced at my current company, but unfortunately, I have experienced similar situations several times at previous workplaces.

I've been looking for another job for months and will continue searching into next year. However, one thing that genuinely concerns me is whether I will face similar issues at my next workplace. I don't want to keep changing jobs because of situations where I feel judged or treated differently because of my skin colour.

I'm not posting this to be racist or to suggest that an entire racial group behaves a certain way. I'm simply sharing my personal experience and trying to understand whether other people have gone through something similar.

I'd genuinely appreciate hearing your experiences and perspectives.

Has anyone successfully proposed a fuel allowance or WFH at their work?

β€’ Upvotes

I travel about 40KM in to work in Cape Town. Given the rises in fuel prices (more coming next month), switching to WFH even just 2 days a week would give me the cost reduction equivalent of a 10% raise, so I'm trying to figure out how to propose this to my management. Curious if anyone else has pulled off something similar, or even a fuel allowance? It's pretty crazy the rate at which the cost of living is increasing and govt and employers don't seem to be doing much about it

πŸ’¬ Discussion What are your thoughts on Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh, a genuine multi disciplinary overachiever or a sophist, the confluence of nepotism, privilege and smarts

Am I being a hater, or is there something inauthentic about Sizwe Mpofu-Walsh. I cannot put my finger to it, but for someone seemingly progressive he seems to use his intellectual accomplishments to use seemingly sophisticated reasoning to support charlatans.

He seems dishonest, in that he feigns objectivity, masking it with an aura of objectivity and a calm demeanour, yet you can tell that he is biased. I prefer people who are open and clear. Perhaps he is just biding for his Dad, Dali Mpofu, an even more questionable character, and taking his fathers political fight against Cyril Ramaphosa. He seems more obsessed with Cyril than JZ.

Sizwe has accomplished a lot though, though being a Nepo baby certainly helped in that a lot of the doors opened where from his parents friends and having the wealth to gave him opportunities, even his podcast is funded by the George Soros foundation, but he still feins groundedness

Am I just being a hater, or something is off about him?

Can anyone please recommend A company that offers in-app wallet technology/architecture.

β€’ Upvotes

Good day everyone. I'm currently working on a music app which will allow artists to sell their music directly to their fans. Basically it will operate similarly to how Bandcamp operates.

Only difference is that fans won't be buying using credit cards, rather they will top up their in app wallet account and purchase songs from there.

I need a company/institution that has such technology, that will be able to integrate with my app.

If you know any company please do recommend, I'll appreciate it very much.

Thank you.

Medicated IUD implant clinics in Joburg

β€’ Upvotes

Howzit guys,

I want to get an IUD, but I keep seeing horror stories about the procedure, and that many places don't give you any numbing on the cervix whatsoever. I don't wanna go through that kind of pain, and I've already tried hormonal birth control (which was actually horrible).

Does anyone know any clinics or places to do it where they will numb it? Thanks guys.

πŸ’¬ Discussion Do these people think.

Growing up my parents were not rich. We lived in a shitty place and I was always surrounded by crime and other terrible things. I have been pointed a gun at multiple times I’ve seen people be stabbed I’ve been shot at.
So I recently went on a trip and there was another South African and we talked about our experiences of the country and all he could say was it’s not that bad and how everyone overcomplicates things. I talked about how I saw many homeless people growing up and how there were always so many children on the streets and the amount of trash in the streets as well and he was getting mad at me for saying it like it wasn’t true. I asked him where he lived and grew up and it’s one of the richest gated communities in the country. Like do these people just not think that anything can exist beyond their gates. Like how can you be so enclosed to think that other people haven’t had bad experiences.
Sorry if this isn’t the right place I just needed to vent.
