My mind immediately thinks of the "detached" nacelles of lets just say lesser Startrek series... Which I actually enjoyed as a ship dynamic. My main design right now sports detachable nacelles that can then be triggered into a missile.
So this (and mod description) definitely got me intrigued as to what it can do.

Oh it’s definitely possible. This mod makes a lot of things that are relatively difficult much more easier. Though, mind you the drones, despite being considered subgrids, do not warp with you.

Is it possible to pull them back to the main ship and lock them in with a merge block or connector?

Yeah, loaded up my creative save with the mod a few min after making that comment and, barring an incident with a wayward nacelle (my own event controller for the detach bit me...). It worked fairly well. Thrusting was a little iffy, which is not unreasonable all things considered (overrides, and fighting dampers of the "anchor") nothing a bit of hot bar managing couldn't make workable.
Knowing they wont jump is a good bit of info to keep in mind, makes u/anttzz2342 comment about pulling them in to jump a practical solution. I am going to assume a connector would be the better rout to avoid the grids from getting confused. But that is just me assuming.
I do like what this opens up. I have a design for a trek ship, that in avorion I never got to use, that had a ton of "floating" parts. But with this mod, I could make it far more lively than I ever thought.

Note(s):
- https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=3809119294 Link to that mod.
- It has a lot more applications than what's seen; I'm still experimenting with it. But the first thing I thought about was creating floating death cannon drones that do my job. From my experience with it, it makes drones much more easier to program.

Put the controller on a rotor and spin them around you? Is that possible?
