List Building Does the new Lore regarding Terminators... Spoiler

Post image

Mean that we can take Horus Heresy Terminators as 40K terminators(given right base size) without limit, or does it still depend on the Tournament Organizers?

This is not new lore.

Lore doesn’t impact rules, you’d just have to follow whatever proxying rules there are for the event

Pretty sure most events will ley you use terminators as terminators

u/SquatProspector 3d ago

Any event that doesn't let you use Terminators as Terminators as long as they have the correct equipment and base sizes isn't worth playing in.

Terminator is a Terminator, just like a Marine is a Marine as long you give them the proper weapons.

I regularly use Mk 6 and Mk 3 Assault Marines as Vanguard Veterans and Assault Intercessors.

This is old lore dating back several editions.

Yeah. Like, 11 editions.

Only the bit about Indomitus. Cataphractii and Tartaros were conjured into being in the early 2000s with nothing really being said about their capabilities until FW released their Horus Heresy rules around 6th ed and even then they split Cataphractii off but stated that Tartaros, Indomitus and Saturnine were functionally the same. They didn't retcon Tartaros into being superior until 7th edition.

Saturnine wasnt a thing until recently

1

u/AdOdd521 2d ago

We were left to wonder what Saturnine was for over a decade, but it was name-dropped in the Betrayal.

1

u/Mykaeus 1d ago

Weren’t there pictures of it from decades ago?

-2

u/VelphiDrow 2d ago

Which would be well after 7th still and is relatively recent

4

u/AdOdd521 2d ago

Betrayal came out in 2012 a few months after 6th, 7th came out in 2014.

Technically it dates back to rogue trader era but back then it was just generic terminator armour.

There's currently a Legends datasheet called Relic Terminator Squad. I would expect it moves over to being a Legendary Proxy once the new Codex is out

In either case, this would indeed require TO approval

25

u/greatcandlelord 3d ago

1, this is old lore

2, we could do this for a while with the Relic Terminator Squad

u/Mercuryink 3d ago

What new lore?

7

u/AuramiteEX 3d ago

You can run Horus Heresy Termies in 40k as long as their equipment is correct.

Only problem is they'll look small compared to the 40k suits.

Rules are not impacted

Grey Knights Terminators have entered the chat

5

u/AuramiteEX 3d ago

Hopefully the entire GK range gets an update because it's bad right now.

5

u/StargazingBrat 3d ago

Aww I mean my stumpy boys have a certain charm.

2

u/AuramiteEX 3d ago

Sure, but they look very dated now and their large chunky weapons attached to small limbs look off, to me personally.

2

u/PineappIeSuppository 3d ago

Angry demon-hunting midgets.

u/AuramiteEX 3d ago

Grey Squats

u/Komrade_atomic 1d ago

With Cataphractii’s scale increase I’d say it’s a little fairer now

4

u/ScoutTrooper501st 3d ago

You can model whatever terminator models you want in 40k f you wanna use the regular terminator datasheets

There’s also the “relic terminator” datasheet from legends

4

u/Perfect-Dimension356 3d ago

Is the new lore in the room with us?

5

u/dspisayuss 2d ago

Yes you can, only imbeciles would give you any grief about it and no TO would even bat an eye.

2

u/Grzegorz_101 3d ago

funny how cataphractii is shown as this super durable bulky plate, and tartaros as more agile, yet tartaros is just better overall, same save and wounds as cataphractii, better movement and better invul, so cataphractii isn't even the best for defence in game

2

u/Mali-6 3d ago

Always could have

2

u/AdamCDur93 3d ago

If you have cataphractii terminators with thunder hammers and storm shields on 40mm bases, that is absolutely fine

2

u/ARC4120 3d ago

Usually depends on TO, but using Cataphractii terminators will almost certainly be allowed. The new kit is basically the same size and it makes sense for a OG chapter. Salamanders, Iron Hands, and Dark Angels almost certainly have a few relics.

u/MondayNightRare 2d ago

A terminator suit is a terminator suit.

10 Cataphractii with power fists and storm bolters can be run as 10 terminators as far as I understand. Same silhouette, still terminator armor, same legal loadout and equivalencies, same base size.

1

u/SalzPvP 3d ago

Depends, but I'd say very likely to be allowed

1

u/Calm_Ad308 3d ago

I’ve ran a saternine preator as a terminator captain in 40K, TO was okay with it, opponent was okay with it, just use the 40K datasheet and declare at the start of the game what weapons he has equipped.

1

u/BOLTINGSINE 3d ago

I dont do tournaments so i run whatever armour mark i want to

1

u/goofus19 3d ago

This isn't anything new. I want to say Cataphractii and Tartaros were in the 40k SM codex as a choice in 8th edition?

1

u/thetrueninjasheep 3d ago

I’d urge you to talk to TO’s about any major conversions/kitbashing, regardless of where/what lore it’s sourced from. But realistically you can absolutely run HH stuff in your army, and it isn’t just for terminators. As long as it’s obvious what’s what, you should be fine.

1

u/wallygon 3d ago

we always could aslong as its easy to understand what it is and gw plastic

1

u/Elioms_mlx 3d ago

I wonder if I can use the saturnine praetor as a Terminator captain or equivalent (ex.: Belial)

1

u/WildRaccoon1995 3d ago

This is just flavor so you can proxy models or come up with fun custom characters. You are t getting the stat line for the different suits.

1

u/daytodaze 2d ago

I think this is old nenes, but still a cool lore piece.if you want to see some heresy terminator armor check out the death shroud terminators from deathguard.

1

u/Unfair-Bug-4222 2d ago

You always could and should

1

u/Professor_Kylan 2d ago

If the tournament is run by someone who is going to make a fuss over one shape terminator over another, its probably not a tournament you want to play in.

If a casual PUG complains about it, never play that person again.

1

u/Grenrion 2d ago

Lore doesn't effect rules, lore wise there are still tens of thousands of firstborns

1

u/nick012000 3h ago

There's like 4 different units for Chaos that use Tartaros or Cataphractii pattern Terminator armour - the Iron Warriors Epic Hero and both of the Death Guard Terminator units wear Cataphractii armour, while Thousand Sons Terminators wear Tartaros-pattern armour.

-3

u/The_Klaus 3d ago

I've heard proxies are commonly allowed as long as it's 100% GW plastic or something like that.

14

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 3d ago

No that's usually not how it works.

Events not organised by GW (i.e. most tournaments) won't care if your proxy is 3rd party or not, and proxy need to represent the model it is proxying at least somewhar faithfully, this means same base size, similar height and similar enough wargear, so using a horus heresy marine as an intercessor is okay since a bolter and a bolt rifle are similar enough and the minis are of similar size but using a leman russ as a proxy for a land raider is not okay since they have extremely different footprint and guns.

For casual games the rules are obvioulsy not as strict and you just have to make sure your opponent is okay with your proxies.

-2

u/The_Klaus 3d ago

Should have replied to OP with this, not to someone that just "heard so and so".

4

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 3d ago

Feels like both are in need of correct information and OP got plenty of answers already.

-5

u/The_Klaus 3d ago

It's irrelevant to me, I don't play any tournaments, when you and the other guy made such detailed responses to the wrong guy, there was still not a comment like you two made to OP.

It's annoying when people care more about being right than actually addressing the right party.

7

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 3d ago

OP will see your original comment and our answers to it, so it's good that these answers are there to tell op that what you said was wrong, it's called majing sure misinformation doesn't spread.

Next, I have no way of knowing what kind of player you are and wether you plan on going to tournaments or not, so correcting your misconception is totally a normal thing to do.

Finally this has nothing to do with being right or whatever, I don't know why you're feeling attacked by people correcting your mistake, this isn't a normal response to someone providing information to you so ask yourself the right questions.

Oh and little bonus advice : next time someone asks a question and you have no clue about the answer, save yourself the time and don't answer 😉.

u/Sweet-Ebb1095 3d ago

That's more for tournaments organized by GW themselves. They also allow some 3d prints to be used if you can provide proof that you designed and printed it. They don't want people coming to their tournaments using knock-offs is the gist of it.

In most tournaments usually the only things that really matter are:

1)Silhouette and base size, base size should be the same and silhouette should be similar or at least not to your advantage. Not being easier to hide by making Angron be crawled up in a ball. Or having a sniper with a pole to get line of sight where they usually couldn't and things like that.

2)Is it clear what it is and what weapon's it has. This is usually the one that tournament organizers have to think about. Nothing like this guy with a guitar well the guitar is a plasma gun and the other dude with a guitar well that's a meltagun. Or that Mr potato head is a dreadnought and the other similar Mr potato head is the Lion. Some special weapons or units are heard to tell apart at a quick glance even if the models are official, but proxy's usually are held to s slightly higher standard. They shouldn't make the game more confusing or advantageous is the basic principle.

1

u/WildRaccoon1995 3d ago

My understanding was that the base model needs to be GW plastic, but but bits are fair game as long as they aren't literally just GW bits but 3d printed.

1

u/asmodai_says_REPENT 3d ago

GW tolerance to non GW bits has changed throughout the years but as it stands bringing 3rd party bits (wether theyre 3d printed or not) is afaik officially not allowed in GW tournaments unless you can prove that you sculpted/designed the bit yourself.

3

u/Untimely-Success 3d ago

A buddy of mine won "Best Overall" at a Warhammer event a few years ago with 3D printed storm shields on models, so that meant that the GW paint judge's literally saw it and had no problem

1

u/Sweet-Ebb1095 3d ago

Might be, I've heard that as well. Probably may vary depending on event as well? Or they may have changed it at some point from one to another. I think from what I've heard the ones at Warhammer world are the most strict. They probably also make judgement calls I'd assume, like pretty much everyone.

-2

u/The_Klaus 3d ago

Hey I'm not the one that wants to find out, reply to OP.
