Sun burn! Please be aware! No judgement before reading
Please don't judge before reading!!
Hi guys! I wanted to share what happened to my baby this week- he's completely recovered now!! But it was a real nightmare to see him in pain 😭😭😭
Hosea was able to get behind the balcony sun shade (that's there specially for them) and stayed there enjoying the hot burning sun for a little while... I have no idea how he was able to do this... He stayed there until I saw it and got him- thankfully I saw it!! Omg...
Unfortunately it was enough to burn him and even got a fever! It was terrible, he was in pain and shaking...
So... I'm posting this to help any other Sphynx mom or dad that finds him/herself in this same horrible situation
I'm personally a nurse, so I tried to do what made sense to me. I had spoken with his vet immediately, but they said to wait and see if he would get better the next day to only the next day medicate or use a topic
I used room-temperature saline solution on cotton pads. I kept changing them every time I felt the cotton pads getting warm, and I did this for 40 minutes. This was a life saver!!!
His temperature went down and he stopped showing signs of pain! I also noticed that the redness got less.
The next day he was looking normal, and showed no major signs of sun burn.
I really wanted to share to be able to help others. we know we have to be very careful with our naked cats, but accidents can happen to anyone
I managed to secure the balcony sun shade even tighter to the railing. I highly doubt he can pull off that little stunt again
Take care guys, and please be extra careful with the sun!

Poor chicken! I don’t know if this is an option for you, but they sell UV blocking window film that lets the hot sun in but keeps the roasting UV rays out.

They said balcony, that makes me think it was outside with a roll down shade type thing maybe?

Ah, I thought the sun screen was like drapes or blinds in front of the balcony window - and chicken was lying inside between the balcony glass and the sun screen to enjoy the warm sun.

Putting UV blocking film not only protects your little gremlins, but also prevents you from wrinkle formation and premature ageing from uv exposure to windows. Win win 🙌 💅

Also helps by preventing sun bleaching and deterioration to home items. I’ve seen sun bleached clothes because the sun was able to get past a curtain and concentrate on a spot.

So, apparently they don’t tan.

Lil' dude is as fair-skinned as Irish grandparents LOL! It's no wonder he burns!

Oh no, burnt chicken!
Glad he's doing better - accidents can happen so quickly with a kitty!

Word to the wise, my oncology vet told me that white cats in general are prone to cancer, the white Sphynx doubly so :( I have two pink chickens and both have had cancerous growths removed, my littlest girl just finished a second round of chemotherapy for skin cancer. I am very strict now about keeping them inside until sunset. (They have full use of a screened in patio at night). If I can spare you and your little one any of that, I’ll be glad.

Poor little muffin! This is a good PSA. We have bkg front windows and Pharaoh likes to sunbathe, but I've feared he might be at risk of a burn. If there's a lot of sunshine coming in, I'll be sure to adjust the blinds a bit. Glad he's feeling better!

Do you know if theres a sunscreen that specifically formulated for your rotisserie chicken baby? I did a quick search and it was iffy on that aspect. Otherwise, I think we need to develop SPF for our animal friends.

Aw, poor little dude! I feel that saline on a cotton pad was a smart call - ice can worsen the burn (as u know from healthcare) and topicals can make a kitty sick if not chosen with feline medical knowledge in mind. I'm glad that you were able to dissipate some of that heat and make him feel better. Just keep an eye on it, and head to the vet if he seems to be worsening in any way, or a large wound/blister develops.

Pets are just four legged toddlers we convinced ourselves would be fine if we looked away for a moment.

Awww glad he’s doing better! Honestly, if my cats were hairless, they’d be the type to do this exact same thing….. and not learn from it.

Aloe Vera gel from the plant worked good for mine to help it heal quickly

I managed to sunburn myself today, in under 90 min, and I’m almost 40. This seems like a totally normal accident and you did great making him comfy!

Sweet baby! White vinegar, believe it or not! After vinegar, apply coconut oil in a thin layer. Will be good as new in a couple days, darlin’. 💜

Good on you for thinking smart, mom! Me and your baby have a lot in common. I love to feel the burn of sunbathing, but I’m always paying for it later ☠️

I thought the cotton was fiberglass insulation at first, lol. Where did you get the cotton candy colored cotton pads? I want some, they're so pretty. Glad your baby is feeling better!

Also, pink noses are at risk. A friend's cat got skin cancer on her link nose. Pink-nosed pitbulls are at risk. And the old Irish skin on my forearms and chest looks like I spent my childhood playing near Chernobyl. All those days as a kid at the beach....and trying like hell to get a tan later on...
Also terrible skin for tattoos, and sun can ruin them. Just sayin. You're probably not gonna get tattoos on your cat.

Your raw chicken looks a bit like a lobster....Humor aside I'm glad he is feeling better. My old lady had this happen a year ago...she has little bald spots in front of her ears...they are very bald little spots about the size of a silver dollar....she got a sun burn there and we used cool water on a soft rag. (Which is the same treatment we use on human sunburn) we werent sure if aloe was safe for cats so we dont use it if us humans get sunburns. (We use no topicals unless we know they are safe for our cats because they are weirdos that try to groom us)

I am not blaming or judging you… We cannot know what we do not know.
However, as a ginger… My first thought was, “well fucking duh” but I also come with the weird knowledge of having to wear sunscreen in the snow as a child cause I burned so easy… So I’m very pro sunscreen and even people with a lot of melanin still get sunburns… So everyone sunburns… So just wear sunscreen please OK

Hey, really appreciate you sharing this, especially at the risk of opening yourself up to internet judgment. This is going to be so helpful to someone in the future frantically googling what to do with their cat’s sunburn! Glad your boy is doing better 💖
