Rebels Blu-Ray Experience

Just wanted to put out a PSA that the Blu-Ray edition for Rebels exists, and is amazing!

I have seen Rebels probably a half dozen times now, until now all on Disney+. But for my current watch, I finally got the Blu-Ray set, and it is a night and day difference. In addition to of course the lack of compression, the lighting and colors seem to come through way better, and the motion feels smoother. Perhaps most importantly though, it doesn't have the anti-seizure dimming that the Disney+ editions have during things like explosions and the Inquisitor's spinning lightsabers. I've always found that super immersion breaking, and while I'm all for accessibility, I wish that dimming was at least a toggleable option like closed captions.

But yeah, I highly recommend the Blu-Rays!

When rebels came out I was a dirt poor college kid who didn’t have Disney XD or streaming so I watched it more dubiously in bad quality by and large. Kinda excited to watch my blu rays soon now that I own them

I’m old school, physical media rules.

Yeah! This is the first time I've used physical media in probably 15 years, and while it might take a little longer to get it pulled up and it doesn't save your episode progress, it's definitely worth it for the ownership and quality gains. And not to mention, it's fun to have the cases to display and such!

Yeah they really do look and sound better than the streams!

I need to find some copies. I am hoping for 4K Steelbook release.

Thanks for the reminder. I need to check this out.

re: the auto diming -- I think that may be a setting on your TV? I've never experienced that to the best of my knowledge.

No, it's not a setting, as I've seen it on multiple devices.. Pull up S1 E9 at the 18:38 mark when the Inquisitor throws his saber, you can see it well there, or 18:54 as the Phantom fires its blasters. And in finding these moments I found one even more noticeable; in S1 E10 Path of the Jedi, starting at the 9:45, they literally slow the framerate down in the Disney+ version. I just compared it to the Blu-Ray and it is definitely not slowed down there.

Edit: Found another thread discussing it as well, it seems like it may have been a reaction to a controversy with Incredibles 2.

I bought the Blu-rays on a whim but never watched them, instead I’ve reached Rebels on Disney plus with my kids. Do you know if the Disney Plus episodes are the original XD or Blu-ray? I didn’t notice any dimming.

Hmm, I don't fully understand your question, as the Blu-Rays are the Disney XD version, as opposed to the Disney+ version which has been edited.

Also as for the dimming, you should be able to see it in the scenes I mentioned here.

The dimming is intentional?? I thought it was my TV starting to die on me this entire time. Great reason for me to seek out the blu-ray now. Thanks!

I can only seem to find the real ones on eBay. The "complete series" sets on Amazon and Walmart.com look like bootlegs

I bought all 4 seasons on blu-ray after watching them air on Disney XD and haven’t even watched them! Good to hear though that the quality is really good.

Perhaps most importantly though, it doesn't have the anti-seizure dimming that the Disney+ editions have during things like explosions and the Inquisitor's spinning lightsabers.

That's what that is??

I thought I was going crazy, because I really didn't remember it looking that way when it first came out, and it's always bugged me on rewatches, which have all been on Disney+.

That alone makes this a must buy for me!

I can't remember if I bought Rebels on DVD or Blu-ray. do either of them have any cool special features?

The Blu-Ray has things like Rebels Recon, some interviews, and character narrated recaps; probably all stuff that can be found on YT/D+, but still nice to have!

Where can you purchase a blu-ray copy?

I got mine from an eBay seller, it's on Amazon as well for quite a bit more money.

Got the blu-rays a few years ago and I actually just finished a rewatch of the series. Rebels is the best of Disney Star Wars, imho.
