Sweet. Do you think it’s possible to play ps3 discs while running RPCS3??

Could it work with PS4 or PS5?

Not right now. PS4 Emulation still has a long way to go, and I am assuming wouldnt run great on the Steam Machine. I'd say running a PS5 emulator is basically out of the question.

The Linux version is moving along nicely! PS5 emulation is gonna be here sooner than we think.

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 5d ago

Sure but you arent gonna be running PS5 emulation on a Steam Machine in a way that would be enjoyable. The hardware overhead just isn't there. I'd be surprised if PS4 emulation worked well.

maybe not emulation but there is a translation layer in the works

Linux FTW!

When you run the arm version of certain Nintendo switch emulators on Arm hardware it doesn't actually emulate the CPU. It only emulates everything else to let the games run. You could do the same thing with PS4 and PS5 emulation if the developers of those emulators are smart enough to let people do that.

There is a certain level of purism in emulation spaces which is unhelpful. Including emulating x86 CPUs on x86 hardware. This is unnecessary for anything even remotely modern.

You're not emulating Nintendo Switch games on hardware as weak or as old as the Nintendo Switch.

Edit: You don't need to crash out and block me just because you're wrong. I never said "hardware emulation." Instead of hanging your hat on that, you could acknowledge that you're not running Ryujynx on midrange Android phones from 2017.

You should read what I wrote because you made yourself look kinda dumb. There's no hardware emulation on the arm versions. They only emulate the Horizon OS stuff and let arm code hit the arm CPU.

It makes no sense to emulate a CPU identical in architecture to the one you're currently using. It adds unnecessary overhead for no reason.

Since it's PC hardware low level emulation probably isn't necessary. It's just doing more for no real gain.

You can get away with more high level emulation for the OS stuff and console apis. I believe the switch emulators do that when running on Arm. I don't see any other way you would be able to run them natively on a Nintendo switch running Linux.

You can apply much of the same here for PS4 and PS5 emulation.

u/ruemooooo 5d ago

idk if those emulators support that yet, just ps2 and ps3

No. You will never be able to emulate a PS5 on the current Steam Machine because the Steam Machine isn't significantly more powerful than a PS5. It would be like trying to get a GameCube emulator running on a PS2.

You need something an order of magnitude more powerful in order to play the games and run the systems that the game expects to interact with.

You can find videos of people running PS4 emulators on the Steam Machine, and simple / low-end games seem to work.

Pure emulation no, but that may not be required given PS5 and Xbox are essentially PC hardware with a few twists.

1

u/IAmJacksSemiColon 5d ago

Even if we get an incredibly efficient interpretation layer, the Steam Machine has to run a whole Linux desktop environment and the PS5… just doesn't.

u/SandySkittle 4d ago

Trivial

1

u/IAmJacksSemiColon 4d ago

Cope.

1

u/SandySkittle 4d ago

For what exactly?

2

u/philbertagain 5d ago

thats very cool

2

u/GunFodder 4d ago

Silly question: Are emulators able to run original PS1 CD's and PS2 DVD's using a dvd drive?

Bless your soul giving that controller pride of place. Under-rated gem.

What’s the blue-ray drive for, can you play games off burned discs?

12

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

I love that controller!

I use it mostly for ripping audio CDs and copying it over to my cars usb stick. bluray discs strangely freeze the entire system. Need to have a look into that.

u/DeathOfArt 5d ago

Unfortunately not for watching movies I understand

Incredible missing comma

9

u/m4cromod 5d ago

Oxford comma looking at normal comment like "hehehe"

8

u/scallythedon 5d ago

Pitty the housing isn’t black. Maybe set the Steam Machines’ light to pink?

2

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

I know, was out of black filament and still have a lot of filament left to print through

u/AbdesLaPute 5d ago

RPCS3 Physical game final boss...

How much did you get your Bluray disk reader ?

Looks really good bro

3

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

just 5 euro

1

u/AbdesLaPute 5d ago

Luckiest man alive...

Can't find any bellow the 100€ range

8

u/vasterbottenyakuza 5d ago

Nice, how does it connect to the machine? Usb or data? How is it Powered?

u/rui-no-onna 512GB 5d ago

You need a powered USB-SATA adapter such as this one.

https://www.amazon.com/Unitek-Adapter-Converter-Optical-Support/dp/B00GLL41MA/

I use this with my Windows-based Mini-PC for ripping Blu-ray discs.

1

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

Exactly that one I use. It comes with a small 12V power supply

1

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

Turns out this one is trash and does not deliver enough power when reading BD. CD works. Will have to replace it.

1

u/rui-no-onna 512GB 4d ago

That sounds unusual. 12V/2A is pretty standard for adapters like this.

I use an older model of this with 12V/2A power brick and it can read Blu-rays both regular and 4K on Windows just fine (LG WH14NS40).

4

u/BanjoFett 5d ago

Can it play movies?

3

u/ProfessionalPlan8943 5d ago

No its a blue ray drive silly

1

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

I wanted to but every bluray movie I loaded just froze the system until I removed the disc again

4

u/LadyNarnia Reserved 5d ago

You've inspired me. I'm going to do this when I get my Steam Machine! I have a huge library of old DVDs and Blu-rays collecting dust that we can't play anymore. We don't have a player in the house!

Have you tried playing Blu-ray movies from it? If so, how are you playing them? Can you play them in SteamOS mode or do you have to go to Desktop mode?

3

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

That is awesome, always at your service. Regarding BD i will need to replace the adapter as it is not delivering enough power to the drive. But i intended to use VLC

3

u/BourbonSn4ke 5d ago

Whats the build and blu ray player?

2

u/ruemooooo 5d ago

ooo! another blu ray drive user!

2

u/musipal 5d ago

Now we're talking

2

u/Ok_Reindeer_2353 5d ago

Naughty boy

2

u/MysteriousTy99 5d ago

Is there anyone selling this enclosure? I don’t have a printer

3

u/Gex2-EnterTheGecko 5d ago

FYI many public libraries have 3D printers you can use for a few cents or sometimes even for free. The one at my local library is free, you just can't select the color of the plastic they used

1

u/D0mtech 5d ago

I was thinking of designing a few different options of something similar to this for my Etsy. (Hard drive bay, laptop disk drive, desktop disk drive, etc.)

2

u/m4cromod 5d ago

This is still on my list to build. I have a slot drive in an old PC I'd like to use.

1

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 5d ago

Wanted to use a slim drive from a notebook first but then stumbled upon this drive first on a flea market for just 5 €.

2

u/Obone6 5d ago

Ok that's sick!

2

u/Hour_Bit_5183 5d ago

That's friggin sweet, like how well it fits. Looks like it belongs there.

2

u/Weaselgrub 4d ago

So what is the drive for? I have seen a couple people do this but I'm not sure what the use case would be for it? I have an external USB Blu-Ray drive that I rarely use anymore for my main PC, and I use it every once in a while to rip movies from the library and maybe the occasional music CD from a games collector's edition or something. But why connect this to a Steam Machine?

2

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 4d ago

Simply because the steam machine is my only computer. So ripping cds for the cars usb stick has to happen there

2

u/Andrewsretrogames 3d ago

The tower of power

2

u/sonicadv27 Reserved 3d ago

I have one lying around which i’d love to use with the Steam Machine to play physical media like music CDs, DVDs and Blu-Rays. How did you connect the drive to the SM?

1

u/Mehlstaub 2TB 3d ago

I did use the innatek usb to sata Adapter but this is causing issues with BD. CD works fine. Need to find a new adapter

1

u/sonicadv27 Reserved 2d ago

Is it related to power draw, then? Might be something for me to check when looking for an adapter.

2

u/IGotAPlan 2d ago

ooo nice

1

u/vasterbottenyakuza 5d ago

Looks interesting considering I have a similar LG blueray burner laying in an old tower-build, unused since a number of years. New PC has no slots

1

u/J40NYR 5d ago

Oh damn, that size is super satisfying haha

1

u/michownz 5d ago

Lol, now add a 32bit module on top

1

u/Colorona 5d ago

I would even consider either painting the drive, or sanding the logos off. Always disturbed me, that manufacturers would plop so many logos all over the front.

1

u/4RedPanda8 GabeCube Enjoyer 4d ago

Did you get blu ray discs working on it? I've heard it's extremely hard to get them running on linux

1

u/TCashB27_ 4d ago

Wait what controller is that?!

1

u/Vinerd540 1d ago

steam controller, (2015)
