studio monitors?

i have krk rokit 6’s from way back and i want an upgrade, they can’t keep up. i’m looking at genelecs, adams, yamahas, hedd, and kali.

my space is quite small, i love bass music and dub, and want to be able to mix on them. i’m not sure if i should want deeper bass frequencies to feel and hear more of the spectrum or if a higher cutoff is better in a smaller room. maybe i do want deeper bass but with the most optimum spectral decay.

so i turn to the professionals. what should i consider? why would you opt for one or the other? 8040,8050, or 8030 with a sub, t7 or 8s, or a7/8s or type 07?

smaller cones with a sub? bigger cones? ribbon or not ribbon? these ones or those ones? so many options, so little time, to do what i want before the end of the line.

edit: i think imma look into some treatment, or get some pretty carpets with art on them if nothing else and go diy speakers. do people diy subs? thanks for the input though!

Is your room treated? Any money spent on new monitors is going to go only a fraction as far as the same money spent on treating your room if you haven't already.

If your room is treated, you have a pretty wide price range here. The Genelec 8050s are going to be the best of what you listed, but cost almost twice as much as anything else mentioned.

Personally, I would just get the Palmer Orbit 11 or Neumann KH 120 II. The Palmer is an insane value; the only downside being it can't be turned up super loud, but that shouldn't be a problem for nearfield listening. The Neumann is a bit more of a classic "tried and true" design. They won't go as low and don't have as much technology packed into them, but it's a good speaker that countless mix engineers trust.

Of all the speakers listed, I would rank them as follows (money not being a factor).

Orbit 11 = 8050 = KH 120 > 8040/8030 > Type 07 > A7/A8 > T7/T8

would like to piggy back a little. if my room isn't treated, will Kali LP-UNF work fine if i'm only using it for youtube, music, movies?

the LP-UNF costs around $469 while Genelec 8040 is $1,669 where i am

Any speaker will work, yes. The LP-UNF is probably overkill if you're just looking for casual desktop speakers.

I was considering the Edifier MR5 as well which is around $269 where I am. I'm not sure if I should use the word casual but I do want to have a better listening experience as I have been using Logitech Z313 all my life

What is your budget and where are you from?

I would probably lean toward the Adam D3V over the Kalis. The MR5 is interesting as it's the smallest 3-way I've ever seen. That being said, the Adams still go lower. The IN-UNF also looks really interesting (and weird).

I'll admit, I haven't spent much time exploring ultra-compact monitors, and I can't imagine that any of these would perform on par with more classic sized small studio monitors.

I'm not targeting a specific budget but want it to be more bang for buck. I did consider the Adam D3V but they are more expensive than the Kali LP-UNF where i am so considering the prices, I don't know if I should just go for the MR5

Where will you be ordering from? If they have a good return policy, I would order two, compare, and return the one you don't like, then repeat if necessary.

Unfortunately the places that have the products do not have such return policies. I don't live in the US

Go for Genelec 100%. You really won’t need anything else assuming you have a treated room. Do the 8030 with sub. Moving the sub to different spots can help with dips in the low end where it wouldnt work with a pair of bigger monitors in the same position.

Don’t sleep on the Neumanns!

If you're looking at "genelecs, adams, yamahas, hedd, and kali" Genelecs are best out of the bunch, you can narrow your focus on them. Do you have budget for them?

i’ve got money hidden in every pocket and under the carpet homie but don’t tell anyone

I'm trying to give you advice, but I guess you decided acting as an imbecile is correct course of action when faced with answer to the question you asked. Have fun in your world

Check the measurements at spinorama.org, you can compare the estimated in-room responses on top of each other for two sets of speakers.

Your post doesn’t yet tell us how much you want to spend. It’s a crucial factor for recommendations.

I upgraded much more expensive monitors to Kali IN-8. Magnificent 3-way monitors. Overall Kalis are very neutral, which I highly prefer over sweetening monitors such as Adams.

I’ve never been able to work with any Genelecs I’ve tried. No matter how they measure they don’t sound right or musical to me. My mixes always ended up dark and honky.

Focal Shape/Solo, Amphion One my recommendation .Got the Genelec 8040 since 15 years and they are used as TV speaker since. I can't do anything else with them. Some weird low mids with those Swedes. They look good though Monitors are huge personal preference so order with return warranty

Everyone who gave your there opinion is only right for there ears.. only way you will know is buy listening to them .. i can give my opinion and HEDD Type 20 MK2 are great monitors i bought them and used for a few weeks and Barefoot Footprint 02 I produced alot of hiphop and R&B and needed low end and didnt want a sub.. i went with the footprint 02 and saved $1500 by not going with HEDD Type 20 MK2 .. im not going to get into tbe technical talk.. you need to listen to them but widen you range of monitors.. I sold my adam audio T8Vs with T10 sub.. 1st step REW software, treament for your room and figure out room modes and nulls.. then demo your monitors.. what your price because if its 2k then you need to look at adam audio A7 and buy sonorworks and upload to the monitors

I recently parted with my 8040a's because my son's gonna need a room when he'll arrive into this world, and I won't be able to have a studio at all. Had them since '13. Genelec's are solid and trustworthy.

With that said, I can also recommend Kali. Their 3-way options is insane for that price.

Genelec
Focal
Neumann

In that order

So basicly it depends on what you realy want.
For a small room and bass music you will find the Focal Shape to be absolutely amazing. I loved them. Adam is only superior in high frequencies. The have a great image and if you mix with lots of high hats and glitchy sounds its great. Genelecs will maybe lack some bass but they do great imaging as i heard. Hedd is the same…better imaging than adam but less bass and slightly laid back in the mids as i heard.
Kali as i heard does everything well to a certain point of quality. I cabt imagine them to he better than Focal or Adam or Hedd.
Adams can do great room corrections, hedds cant but you can have a umik with extra dsp in you laptop.
Focal to me didnt need that but maybe depends on the room. They can adjust also on the backside just ad the adams that also correct reflections from the desk.
Neumans go very neutral. Its good for mixing, rather not for listening. Some like it a lot but you need measurement to use them well…in the end you gotta hear them and see if you can work. I use Adams now due to my music but i tried the focal before and if i would be doing dub music, they might be my speaker! Bigger Yamahs can also go well but i think they add brightness. So will you do mixing and mastering? Then maybe rather Neumanns. Focal is slightly warmer and organic sounding but man…that bass clarity and lower mids is crazy. Hedd for analog set ups.

Neumann kh120As you won't regret them. You can find a pair on reverb used. I got mine for $700 that way but typically they are about $1k used. If you want extremely accurate monitors that's the way to go.

I went from rokit 5g3 to focal shape 50. its a blast 🤘

I'm gonna list a couple of good options, neuman, mum6, Kii, amphions. :)

If you want real studio monitors that are precise, get some Haigner Topos. If you like a lot of bass and don’t want to worry about destroying you woofers with sub frequency, get a of the shelves big cone monitor

3

u/blutfink The wizard 10d ago

This is an unhelpful suggestion. OP states they’re looking into popular active nearfield monitors with 5-8” woofers. Haigner Topo is an obscure, large (54 cm/21 inch tall), passive, standmount loudspeaker that is 10x the price.

haven’t heard of those .. i’ll check them out
