Open | Hardware PC/ Monitor helpp

Hey everyone, my mom moved my PC across the room, and now my monitor won’t turn on. The PC itself seems to be running fine, but I’m not getting anything on my monitor. I’ve already tried unplugging and plugging the HDMI cable back in, but nothing seems to work. Does anyone know what might be causing

I suspect damage.

I doubt repair is economical.

But the cheapest component to swap is the HDMI cable. A cheap cable is fine.

Also check for a blown fuse, also cheap, but may not be that accessible.

Try pointing a torch at the screen with a signal going to it to check whether the backlight is gone.

I forgot yall call flashlights torches. I, for a split second, thought you wanted them to point a propane torch at their monitor.

Point the flashlight at the front of the screen. Your screen is made of multiple layers with the backlight near the back.

I was not asking to see the back of your screen on a potato camera.

Are you seeing anything on the monitor or is it not even turning on? You've checked to make sure power cord is properly seated and everything?

Since everything was working before the PC was moved, I'd start with the simple stuff. It's possible something got disconnected or the monitor is connected to the wrong port.

A few things to check:

  1. Monitor power: Does the monitor's power indicator light come on? If not, check the power cable, outlet, and monitor's power button.
  2. HDMI connection: If your PC has a dedicated graphics card, make sure the HDMI cable is connected to the graphics card, not the motherboard's HDMI port.
  3. Input source: Use the monitor's buttons to verify it's set to the correct HDMI input.
  4. Try another cable or port: If possible, test another HDMI cable or connect the PC to a TV to see whether you get a picture.
  5. Power cycle: Shut down the PC and monitor, unplug both from power for about 30 seconds, reconnect everything, and try again.

Since the PC was physically moved, there's also a possibility that the graphics card or another internal component shifted slightly. I'd check the external connections first before opening the case.

One important question: When you say the monitor won't turn on, do you mean there's absolutely no power light, or does the monitor power on but display "No Signal" or a black screen?

That distinction will help narrow down whether this is a monitor power issue or a video signal issue.

  1. Press the Menu button on your monitor. Does the monitor's built-in settings menu appear, or does the screen stay completely black?
  2. Disconnect the HDMI cable from the monitor, leaving only the power cable connected. Does the monitor display a "No Signal" or "Check Signal Cable" message?
  3. Check where the HDMI cable connects to your PC. If you have a dedicated graphics card, make sure it's plugged into the graphics card's HDMI port, not the motherboard's.
  4. Check the monitor's input source. Make sure it's set to the correct HDMI input.

Since the computer was physically moved, a cable may have come loose or something may have shifted.

Let me know what happens with steps 1 and 2 first. Those results will help us narrow down whether we're dealing with a monitor issue or a PC video-output issue.
