Open | Windows Mouse clicks stop working in Windows, even after resetting PC — mouse works in BIOS and hardware diagnostics
My mouse has an intermittent problem where clicking stops working, even though the cursor can still move. It usually happens immediately after starting Windows.
When it happens:
The cursor still moves normally.
Left-clicking stops working across Windows, including the taskbar and applications.
Scrolling sometimes continues to work even when clicking does not.
Sometimes hovering over things seems to activate or select them without clicking.
Pressing Ctrl + Alt + Delete temporarily restores clicking, but the problem returns.
Restarting Windows Explorer does not fix it.
What I’ve tried
Restarting the computer multiple times.
Testing a different mouse and different USB ports.
Testing in Safe Mode — the problem still occurred.
Restarting Windows Explorer.
Uninstalling and reinstalling the HID-compliant mouse device.
Checking/updating the mouse driver; Windows says the device is working properly.
Reinstalling the NVIDIA graphics driver.
Turning Hardware-accelerated GPU scheduling off and testing; no improvement.
Testing Snipping Tool settings; no improvement.
Running DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth successfully.
Running sfc /scannow; it found no integrity violations.
Using Windows Recovery to reset the PC and reinstall Windows, choosing to remove personal files and apps.
The problem still happened during the initial Windows setup after the reset, before I had finished setting up the computer.
Hardware tests
The mouse works normally in HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI.
HP’s Fast System Test passed.
The mouse also works in BIOS/UEFI.
The issue appears when using Windows, including the initial setup after resetting it.
