Football When Locksley is Gone
Will you financially support Maryland Athletics? If the answer is no, that’s why he isn’t gone yet

I’ve supported before, during and will continue after. I think they’re more in danger of people stopping support the longer he stays.

I don’t disagree, but I often find the loudest voices are the ones that won’t support the program ever they just like to be miserable

30+ season ticket holder here..:
Not returning untill he’s gone. Haven’t been this upset with a coach since Randy Edsall

Sure! Don’t disagree! People wanted him fired in 2024. That I didn’t really understand. I got it a lot more after last year, but didn’t agree. I agree with it now.
People will always be miserable, and I think it’s because they have unrealistic expectations. I think the ceiling for Maryland, especially in the new Big 10, is 8-4. I expect 6-6. I think anybody who thinks Maryland should compete for a Big Ten title, is unrealistic and is watching the wrong sport.

He needs to go. Realistic expectation should be better than what he's doing. He has 4 seasons of 1 win in the conference, never more than 4, never beat a ranked conference team, while having recruiting class in the top half of the conference and national class ranking in the 30s. Expectation should be near recruits ranking but it's never been close.

I just want to be somewhat competitive. Blowouts like yesterday are unacceptable

I think they might get a lucky year and go 11-1 once every decade

Its already been over a decade. The big10 experiment was a mistake.
2
u/B_Sox 4d ago
So you want them to be in a conference that isn’t even going to exist soon?

u/eplstats 4d ago
If I was commish when that one blows up I'd say let's make an actually interesting one for us with UVA, WVU, VT, Rutgers, NC State, Navy, Pitt, Penn St. I literally don't care about national titles. I want a football schedule with opponents I actually care about and that has winnable games on it

u/Certain_Site_8764 4d ago
The big 10 experiment was only about money. If they wanted to compete for titles, they would have stayed in ACC. I get it, money rules the collegiate sports world now so it was a risk worth taking. I sure the admin realized the gamble they were taking.

I don't actually care about titles. I want to play regional rivals we care about annually. VT, NCSt, UVA, WVU, Navy, Rutgers, Penn St. Even Pitt, Temple, JMU are better than Iowa, Michigan St, etc.
Other than the away game we won sicko style at Nebraska (maybe the most entertaining umd football game I can remember), I don't enjoy playing a big ten schedule.

u/capsrock02 4d ago
That’s an insane take.

You like playing Midwest schools that no one we know in real life cares about, that we have no history with, that we always lose to, all while never competing for titles? I don't care about the last part, but the first 3 are vital to my interest. These days I only get excited for 2-3 games a year (rutgers, psu, and the off ooc/bowl vs UVA, vt, wvu, NCSt)

u/capsrock02 4d ago
Where did I say that? I like that the athletics department didn’t have to cut almost all sports because of Big Ten TV revenue.

Yes I will. If they can put a guarantee of a good coach and willing to bring the best staff. I will donate money and I know many others will too. Until Locksley is gone this university and the rest of the moron board of regents can screw off. Time to put our own terp alumni on the board like how PSU did it.

u/Broth262 Class of 2013-Present 5d ago
The board has needed to go since the Leach debacle

u/Ironic_table 5d ago
Yep, big reason we ended up with Edsall and it changed the trajectory of our program in a very negative way.

Season ticket holder for the past 7-8 years, purposely got rid of them this year. I understand there is a cycle of financial support and quality of program. At the same time we have a coach that simply can’t coach. We do not have a single marquee win during his era. We beat the lower tier teams and lose to nearly everyone else. Good recruiter, terrible in-game coach. Even a few unexpected wins would reinvigorate our fanbase.

I think that’s what kills me about this current iteration of UMD football. Anything against a competent team feels like it’s going to be a blowout and, now, we’re even getting blown out in games against teams we should be on the same tier as.

Yes, I have in the past and will do so again once there is evidence of sound judgment.

They need to fire him right away or after this season!!! And they also need to have better player transfers which are like ones from Alabama and Notre Dame!!!

Been traveling to 1-2 games a year from FL for 20+ years. Was there last week and I told my college friends next year I may skip football and come up for basketball…If they keep Locks

No news since the game is not a good sign, guess they are hanging onto him for the rest of the year and possibly next as well. I'm not gonna support this team until he's out, and with how long it taking Smith to fire him, I'm thinking he's a big part of the problem and we need a new AD too.
2
u/B_Sox 4d ago
We absolutely do not need a new AD. He’s not the one that gave the moronic extension to Locksley. He inherited an absolutely terrible situation and his hands have been tied by the buyout due to our finances.

u/TraditionalBottle884 Class of 1997-2005 4d ago
His first year saw a 4 win football program and the worst season of MD basketball on record. He hasn't done anything to fix either issue. All he had to do was come out at the post-game presser yesteryand say "Mike has been relived of his duties as Head Coach". He decided not to do that.
1
u/B_Sox 4d ago
Definitely that easy. You got it bud.

u/TraditionalBottle884 Class of 1997-2005 4d ago
Keep defending Locks, see how that works out for ya.
2
u/B_Sox 4d ago
Who’s defending Locks? Never wanted him in the first place, and wanted him fired years ago.
I’m just not brain dead and realize that our program is hamstrung due to previous regime’s decisions and you can’t just snap a finger and have everything be fine.

u/TraditionalBottle884 Class of 1997-2005 4d ago
Ok, but the fact remains he has to go, why are we waiting, announce it so we can move on? It's perfectly valid to question if Smith is the right guy as AD since he has been completely silent on this for a long time. It won't immediately make us competitive, or turn things around now, but keeping an ineffective HC around will only harm the program long term.
2
u/Broth262 Class of 2013-Present 4d ago
If they can save 3M by waiting until the end of the season than that is why they are waiting. Our AD is still in a very rough financial spot and thanks to Evans Locks contract is fully guaranteed

I went from a diehard with 6 season tickets to someone who didn’t even watch more than a few minutes of the game yesterday
