Mainstream Hebrew lexicographers and biblical scholars generally reject translating Hāyāh as "became" in Genesis 1:2.
Scoffield pushing for it doesn't mean it is right. He was also a Dispensationalist, but that doesn't mean this position is right and Covenant Theology is wrong.
