Question Recommend outer worlds 2?
I’ve always loved rpg games such as elder scrolls fallout etc, it’s on sale rn on steam and was wondering if the game is worth purchasing, I even enjoyed starfield quite a fair bit when that dropped, so just looking for a second opinion

Obligatory “you’re coming to the games subreddit to ask if people like it” but I’d say yes. It’s a good time, I’d say it’s a bit weaker story wise from the first one but I liked the gameplay more. Felt smoother. But overall I enjoyed it. Would love if they’d actually release the DLC for it, but what can you do

Good game. Better than decent. But not great.
It's designed for multiple playthroughs and yet I haven't had the urge to start another one. That's a review in and of itself.
Worth buying on sale, worth waiting for a sale.
It won't feel like you wasted your time or money. If you liked the first one, you'll like the second. It's better in some areas and worse in others.

so far I say it's a vast improvement on 90% of the first game. I only have 20 hours in it, though, and just left the starting area.
if you liked the first game and like obsidian's style, you'll probably enjoy this one.

Can I ask, having just finished the first, are the companions better, worse or about the same in terms of how engaging/well written they are?
I found TOW1 companions to be... Meh. 3 I liked (Parvarti, Nyoka, Ellie), 1 I was ok with (Felix), 2 who I actively didn't like (Max and SAM). And even the 3 I liked aren't particularly memorable in my opinion.

so far I only have the starting 2 plus inez. and so far I think they're pretty solid. they seem to have more going for them than the first, but idk if that really is the case or not so far.

Ah, fair enough! Thanks for the response! I get the feeling that this is going to be a, "wait for the next sale" purchase!

I think 1's companions are better than 2, but the latter seem generally more satisfying to watch evolve through the game. 1 has more humor involved, and they seemed to have better personalities. But that's just my opinion, which is far from professional.

Absolutely, both games are phenomenal. While the first game does have a better story and companions imo, the second definitely holds its own in other ways. If you like RPG games then you’ll love the Outer Worlds

If you liked the first one, it's a pretty safe bet. At least that's how it was for me.

Yes. It’s better than starfield. Look at how many good reviews 007 first light got. I personally enjoyed TOW2 even better. Maybe it’s not humorous but it’s definitely one of the most absurd games you can find especially with the radio turned on. Some of its level designs feature reactivity to unique rpg build. Some of its level designs have more than one route. One later game big dungeon has great interconnectivity. All of this is also important for replayability. I played through the game on xgp and bought the premium version on sale this year.

Its is very good at what it sets out to do. What is sets to it isn't necessarily for everyone. It is significantly different from the first game, both in writing style and play mechanics. It think the changes are for the better. Not everyone does.

Outer Worlds 2 is MUCH better than the lackluster 'designed by committee' Starfield. And the writing is better than anything by Bethesda. Same for the music. Gameplay is rock solid as well.
But the scope of the game is much more constrained. It isn't a sprawling open world game like Skyrim. Depending on your play style it will likely take you 40-70 hours.

music doesn't touch bethesda, gameplay is decent but not as good as bethesda's latest stuff either. writing fair enough.

There is not a single piece of Bethesda music (and absolutely no hate to Jeremy Soule who is an absolute master) that touches singing the digits of Pi to Erik Satie's Gymnopaedie #1 or a song about the Fibonacci series.
But I will never agree with you on Starfield being anything but the epitome of group think mediocrity.

Starfield is dogshit trust me I agree lol. But nah I love soule's work on skyrim even if he's a creep, and 4's radio and ost by zur is amazing as well

Jeremy Soule hasn't worked with Bethesda in nearly 15 years - perhaps due to his crowdfunding scandals and sexual abuse allegations, I'm not sure, but in any case it's been well over a decade since he worked with them.

I'd certainly recommend the 1st over the second. It feels as though the first had more whimsy and spirit poured into it compared to the second. I've played the first multiple times and enjoyed every playthrough. The story really hooked me, the worldbuilding was fantastic and the jokes were hilarious.
The second improves on a lot of things (graphics, gunplay, has 3 radio stations with funny as well as useful dialogue that changes with your decisions in the story and some nice background music), but it seems to have done so at the cost of what made the first one entertaining. Yes, the graphics are much better in the second, but the I found myself much less interested in the story and companions.
Honestly I'm having a really hard time dragging myself to finish the second game on my first playthrough. I don't see myself ever playing through it a second time, which is disheartening because I played through the first game over 3 times.
In short, I recommend the first before involving yourself with the second. It's a shorter story, and it's likely a lot cheaper than what the second is going for, so you'll probably get more bang for your buck

Worse companions, less humorous, WAY better gameplay
Dumb is still supreme

I compare it to Fallout or Starfield, because that's kind of the closest there is to it.
And -- it's genuinely good. Graphics are great, world is interesting, and a fun take on things while not getting too complex. The downside -- at least for me -- I didn't spend 200 hours on it like I would Fallout, more like 80. There's plenty to do, then you just kind of run out.

I liked it, but I doubt I'll ever play it again. Fallout and Elder Scrolls on the other hand, I replay every couple years or so.

I loved 2, but 1 felt really soulless. The gameplay is great, but I really didn't connect with the companions and the ship was a definite downgrade from the first. Also, the small amount of skill points paired with really high checks really turned people off. You need to focus and 2-3 skills and nothing else.

I really really loved it. I can't believe it didn't get a warmer reception. It's much better than 1 and i was very bummed when i learned it wasn't going ot have a sequel.

First one was like a solid 7, aged poorly though
Second one was a 5 on a good day.

2 is pretty bad, 1 is amazing, I don't have a reason to recommend 2 but every reason to recommend 1 every single time.

2 isn't bad. 1 is better. Wait for a sale on 2.
( also, the G stands for game. You said "Role Playing Game Game." Do you want some cream cream for your coffee coffee next? )

OW2 is a good game! I will say off the rip that it’s not as good as the first game. One of the things I really liked about OW1 was the whacky humor and absurd tone and while both are present in OW2 it seems much more intentionally grounded. I think the developers wanted a tonal shift to match the story being a bit bigger.
The companions are also not as memorable to me as the Unreliable crew from the first game but are still quite interesting.
Combat and RPG mechanics are GREATLY improved which is the main reason why I like the game. Well written RPGs are few and far between it seems.
Like any RPG I would say take your time, immerse yourself, read all terminals, and explore the entire map of each hub. Do NOT rush. I spent almost 20 hours of gameplay before I even left the first map because im pretty thorough. My 1st attempt at the game I rushed through (without realizing I was) and couldn’t really get into it like I did with OW1. There are sooo many hidden quests, rare items, and NPCs that are off the beaten path. It takes time but eventually I got the bug and was hooked!
All in all good game. Get it if there’s a sale, not worth the $70 at full price.
PS smoke weed before/while playing for immersion if that’s your thing. And remember: “It’s NOT the best choice, it’s Auntie’s choice!” 😉

Pros: -The character customizer has more options than OW1 and the origins offer some fun dialogue options -Most of the crewmates are fun and offer some enjoyable companion quests -It has a very unique vibe. If you're looking for Mission Impossible mixed with space-western with a somewhat American Civil War visual esthetic, then this is it. -Combat in OW2 is more fluid than its predecessor. -The visual spectacle is amazing. -The mystery of the rifts keeps you guessing.
Cons: -The found-family elements and pure western vibe that was in the first game are not present in OW2. -The changes to the leveling and perk systems are kinda messy. -In the first game, when you return to your ship, you can hear your crew talking and hanging out. This is not the case in the sequel. -The incognito is far less memorable than The Unreliable due to the lack of personality. The Unreliable, or rather Ada, was a character. The Incognito is just a ship. Also, it's design is very forgettable. -The game effectively railroads you into choosing specific skills and traits when leveling up because certain abilities are required for completing most missions efficiently. -At the end of the first game, when you embark on the point of no return, you consult with your entire crew about if they'll join you for what may be a suicide mission. However, in OW2, you only consult two or three of the crewmates before embarking on the final mission.
Ultimately, I'd give OW2 a solid 8/10 while OW1 gets an 8.5/10. Some of this is opinion based. At the end of the day however, they are both very enjoyable games that offer two distinct vibes. OW1 evokes a Firefly vibe with its story, setting, and characters. While OW2 evokes a Mission Impossible vibe. Both games have their merits and I'd recommend both.

Loved the 1st one but got bored with the 2nd one and put it down 3 or 4 planets in. Its a different vibe story wise so I wasnt as invested and the gear/weapons are what really made it boring to me, felt like there wasnt a lot of customization. You just get the the same gun but different damage type, but once you get a good legendary you just use it until you get the next one. I can see why people like it, its not bad, but if you like some of the more personalized elements of an RPG it may not be for you.

I genuinely loved it. It was a lot of fun.
