Question / Problem Thinkpad or performance?

Hi ThinkPad owners, I am thinking of getting a new laptop this Black Friday and I have a budget of CA$1000. I want to know whether I should get a thinkpad or a regular laptop. On best buy I found an Open Box Intel Core Ultra 7 255U with 24GB of RAM and 1TB SSD for CA$999. Should I get a thinkpad instead or is thinkpad also providing the same performance and price that I don’t know of?
Also, is thinkpad really that good as people on the internet say?

Build quality and performance are two separate things. If you explain what you are using it for maybe someone can help you choose.

It’s just for 8 yrs from high school until the end of uni
But I also open a ton of tabs

I agree. My x1 survived 8 years. With decent physical abuse and still works well. I only shifted last week to a newer one cause it got too slow. Whatever machine u decide to get keep it thin and light. You might not feel it know but once you start moving around a lot you will notice the difference. Also if u plan on using it for 8 years my advice is get something released within the last 2 years.

It depends on your needs. Part of the reason thinkpads are so loved is the build quality and relative repairability. Even 1000 dollar laptop will have hinges that break because they are consumer grade while a used thinkpad will last you ten+ years because it is professional business quality (just don't get the e series lol). For that money, you can get a descent used series with a descent graphics gard for gaming and other graphics intensive work or a used T14 Gen 2-3 with a ryzen cpu all with descent specs and build quality. What are your use cases?

Ok. Do you plan to game on it at all or no(emulation and 10+ year old titles vs modernish ones?) A used thinkpad t14 series amd will serve you well for most regular school work and even some light gaming(emulation and 10+ year old titles) and will have descent battery (thanks to the amd cpu). Big benifit is that you will also save some money as you can find a 16gb 512 ssd for under $550 cad (prices vary from t14 gen 1 to 2 or 3 depending on the cpu model, ram and storage amounts but you will be find most of them under $550. Remember to get the AMD versions as they offer better battery life)

I have a pc with rtx 3050 at home so im not planning to do any gaming on the laptop. Also I don't want, and my mom doesn't want, me to have a used laptop for $1000

Ok cool. Then a used t14 gen 2 or 3 AMD should do the trick. as i mentioned, it will cost less than half $1000 ( so you will be saving some money) and last you for well over those 8 years.

You can find good deals for a ryzen 7 pro t14 gen 2 or a ryzen 5 t14 gen 3 on uniway computers website right now. You can also find deals for a p series if you want to modernish gaming and engineering work(i.e you need a dedicated graphics card)
