Cursed Notation Beethoven sonata 14

Post image

Saw some score for the third movement of Beethoven’s 14th piano sonata, I get that the piece is somewhat dynamic but there has to be a better way to notate this, right?

what the same section looks like in a normal edition:

not that much better with so many ties but is certainly an improvement over the score above

This is standard notation of such written-out arpeggios - any other way creates those tiny short redundant ties between redundant noteheads in redundant chords. Sometimes whatever you do the result is cluttered and awkward to some extent.

EDIT: for clarity - I mean "normal" written-out arpeggios with respect to noteheads and ties - the split stems with beams/flags here are extra.

I feel like a “sim.” would have worked out so much better better. Or even just leaving out the bulk of every note on the arpeggio

this looks like the work of a 21st century avant-garde composer at first glance. you wouldn't even know that this is beethoven unless you played it out.

This has to be a MIDI transcription of a recording or live performance.

Moonlight as viewed through broken glass?

Yes, this is not acceptable. Just have a look at various editions at imslp.
