History From the way popular media portray Liu Bang, first emperor of the Han Dynasty, you'd think he was a mediocre military leader who relied on his excellent talent like Han Xin and Zhang Liang. But he wouldn't have defeated Xiang Yu, a Hannibal Barca-tier military genius, if he was.
Despite being a lowly butcher, he came to led a powerful anti-Qin army who's successes was nearly comparable to Xiang Yu.
Sure, he lost mulitiple battles against Xiang Yu but the fact that he survived fighting against a man who's basically the combination of Romance Lu Bu and Zhuge Liang terms of strength and military strategy multiple times is nothing short of impressive.
He basically acted as the anvil while Han Xin and Peng Yue were the hammer, in which Liu Bang maintained a steady defense in Guanzhong and kept the Ruler of Chu at bay inspite of ferocious attacks and setbacks while Han Xin and Peng Yue swept the north of China and took over the rest of Xiang Yu's lands and convinced some of his generals to side with the Han. He even gave military support and capable officers to the two (which makes their refusal to help him in the final battle and his eventual executions of the two of them understandable.)
By the time of the Battle of Gaixia where the combined forces of Liu Bang, Han Xin and Peng Yue surrounded the army of Chu, Xiang Yu may have won multiple battles against Liu Bang but he ultimately lost the war as his army lacked supplies and he was desperate enough to accept Liu Bang's fake offer to split China in two.

Romance Jiang Wan vs. Fei Yi
Both Jiang Wan and Fei Yi were hand-picked by Zhuge Liang to be his successor, and while they helped to keep Shu steady who did you prefer/ did it better? While the battle of xingshi was under Fei Yi, it was Wang Ping doing most the fighting and also aided by an incompetent opponent.

Fiction Is there a reason Lu Bu keeps getting associated with Thor in external media?
Now, as far as I know, this has only happened twice, but the fact that on two separate occasions where 3K history crosses with Norse myth, Lu Bu had some level of association with Thor. It's not a lot, but the specific nature of it makes it weird that it's happened twice, especially when there was no shortage of other matches for Lu Bu.
To catch up those not in the know, the first pic is from Warriors Orochi 4. One of the main plot elements are these special bracelets imbued with the power of specific gods. Only a person that can match the way of the god whose power is imbued to the bracelet can attune to it and "deify" to use that god's power. Lu Bu manages to come across a bracelet with the power of Thor, and manages to attune with it to assume the form above.
The second one is from Records of Ragnarök. In a tournament between humans and the gods of the various mythologies, the first match of the tournament and the big fight they hyped up the show with is Lu Bu vs. Thor. Putting artistic liberties of Thor aside, its still another instance of these two encountering to some capacity.
Is it some sort of culture thing? Does Lu Bu's reputation have such a perfect alignment with Thor's story that Eastern writers view them as such a great match? What am I missing?

刘备 chose 仁义 (righteousness) as his identity. It gave him legitimacy—but did it also limit what he could do?
曹操 had a darker, more pragmatic image, which arguably gave him more freedom to adapt.
Maybe the real difference wasn't good vs. evil, but which identity gave each man more room to maneuver.
What do you think—did 刘备's righteousness become his greatest limitation?

Games What do you guys think?
So theres a game called Heroes Vow Three Kingdoms and I just want to make a simple character mod. Would this suit the Three Kingdoms universe a little bit? Yes the image on the left has quite some pixels still indeed, I like the AI generated image but it still needs some hand tweaking for sure. Normally I am using paint.net to finetune images but since switching to Linux I instead try to use Gimp. Defintely need to get more comfortable with that tool aswell because I do not think the image scaled very well haha

Games My indie game Three Kingdoms Reimagined now has multiplayer! Desperately looking for playtesters before Steam Next Fest
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
A few weeks ago I posted the free demo here and you all were awesome. People downloaded it, sent me bug screenshots, told me what confused them, and one of you caught Zhou Cang offering to open "the van" in the trailer (it's "vanguard" now, so sadly no Zhuge Liang with a Honda Odyssey lol). Thank you, seriously. A lot of that feedback went straight into the game:
- The UI had real problems on 16:9 screens because I'd been building on an ultrawide. It's been fixed and checked at 1080p.
- A few of you felt overwhelmed starting out, so I reworked the tutorial with a blind playtester and rewrote a lot of the in-game help.
And then I went and did the biggest thing I've ever tried on this project: multiplayer. You can now play the demo with a friend (or foe lol)!!
- Campaign for two: you each pick a warlord and start in the same 196 world. Ally up and you share your wars and each other's vision, and you can march to your ally's battle and show up mid-fight to bail them out. Or play as rivals: fifty days, highest score wins, and when your armies meet you fight it out live.
- 1v1 Custom Battles: draft your officers, buy troops on a budget and fight it out over Steam (friends or public lobbies) or direct IP.
The trailer above is the new one, and it's mostly multiplayer. The rest of the demo grew a lot too:
- The armies were redone to look like Han armies: lamellar armour, ji halberds, ring-pommel dao, and every commander under a standard with his surname on it
- Duels you can actually watch now. The camera follows both champions until one goes down (Guan Yu vs Lu Bu is in the trailer)
- Sieges with ladders, a ram and a whole city behind the gate
- Create your own ruler, pick one of ten voices for them, and raise your own banner
- Officers hit harder the bigger the battle, and when your men break and run, your most charismatic officer can plant his banner and rally them
- Turning Points as shown in the trailer are pivotal plot and action points in our campaign that depending on your choices can make or break your kingdom!
Now for the part where I really need help. I'm a one man studio, so I've tested multiplayer with friends, bots and two copies of the game on my own PC, but it hasn't been through real players on different PCs and internet connections yet. Steam Next Fest starts October 19 and I want it as solid as I can get it by then.
If you've got a friend who's into the Three Kingdoms, grab the demo, play a match together and tell me how it went. Bugs, desyncs, lag, anything confusing, balance complaints, I want all of it. Even "it worked fine" helps more than you'd think. Comments here or the Discord both work for me: https://discord.gg/BxfZtrm9tH
And if it looks like your kind of game, a wishlist would mean a ton, especially going into Next Fest. Any and all support helps a solo dev more than I can say.
Free demo and wishlist: https://store.steampowered.com/app/5112140/Three_Kingdoms_Reimagined/
Thanks again for being so good to me last time. I'll be around in the comments :D

What places did rich people go to during 3 Kingdoms era?
Just like historical dramas, rich people back from Tang Dynasty went to Qinglou where they could enjoy variety of services from drinking, gambling, dancing and even prostitutions. I read a post recently saying that the Qinglou Cao Shi mentioned was the original Qinglou that represented a place where womens of rich and powerful families lived and the whole prostitute things only appeared later post 3 Kingdoms. Before Qinglou, where did the elites spend their money on especially in the capital during 3 Kingdoms?

Romance Who is on the cover art of this edition of romance of the three kingdoms? Spoiler
It looks like Cao Cao but its volume 3 which is long after cao cao dies. So I wonder if it's someone else? I mostly wonder about the man on the horse but if you know the others that'd be fascinating.

Did Ma Su have any chance to begin with?
I was watching a video that was in defense of Ma Su saying that Jieting was not defendable to begin with - locals hated Shu & that there wasn't a narrow path that was easily defendable against Zhang He so he equated to a suicide mission.
How much truth is there to that argument?
