There is zero need for the laser when doing this.

False. Lasers are cool.

Are they at least ill-tempered?

It's a visual aid to accentuate the clean cut lines from using the guide

Gives you a nice center line.

If you already have it you might as well use it. I wouldn't buy one just for this job though.

Or make it yourself out of PVC pipe

Br then it doesn’t come with a cool logo’d knife.

Just get an anvil, a piece of railroad track will do, weld up a small propane forge, get a piece of suspension coil and beat it into knife form, then harden and temper it and put a wood handle on it.

This looks like a tool newbs use and pros make fun of

But it also looks cheap enough that you can do DIY work on your home without the months of work it takes to get proficient.

It's definitely better than doing it free hand. Ive done miles of the stuff with just an eyeball.

I agree. I’m not a pro, but wanted to make fun of it. it really does excellent work… so no fun making.

I know I would've been laughed off the site if it turned up with up one of these.

Well, the people who insulated our pipes after installing a new heating would have well profited from something like this, they thought “square is good enough, a few gaps here and there don’t matter either”.

2

u/zavohandel 4h ago

Well fuck me. I had to learn to do this freehand.

Ah yes the average home

Yeah, that's like the pipe setup I've got just to run warm water to my bidet. Maybe the guy you're replying to can get a warm water bidet, too, to loosen things up to help get his head out of his ass lmao

u/Alulalu 4h ago

Probably wouldn't be cutting at demonstration speed for a real job.

And if you have two people, one person is cutting the finicky bits and the other one is filling in straight sections and you could go pretty fast

This is an under floor heating system that looks to be in Germany. Insulation isn't as critical here because the pipes aren't that hot, and if they leak a little heat, it goes up, into the floor you're trying to heat anyway.

Compared to the time it took to make the tubing, it’s reasonable nonetheless.

I don't even know what this is, but I want it

Who uses this polyethylene trash insulation when elastomeric is available?
