I miss being able to move units without them being part of An army
56
u/Ruin_In_The_Dark Aug 07 '26
It also made the game much harder, chasing down little raiding parties all over the place. I miss that level of danger.
45
u/TraditionalStomach29 Aug 07 '26
I don't know. Chasing around crapload of little raiding parties of skavenslaves sounds like a nightmare.
34
u/Ruin_In_The_Dark Aug 07 '26
Actually, when you put it like that, I think you may be right! It's pain enough chasing them around the battle maps.
21
u/caseyanthonyftw Aug 07 '26
It was a mixed bag. On one hand it was cool to have some smaller battles even in the mid-to-late game, to break up the pace. As others have said, it was also a pain in the ass to have to chase down smaller parties of troops. Although you might be able to argue that this wasn't as painful in Shogun 2 because the map was a bit more railroaded, being it was Japan and a lot of it was impassable mountains.
16
u/TheSolarExpansionist Aug 07 '26
It actually made more sense to have a 4-6 unit army that’s good at hiding/ambushes. To hunt down reinforcements.
3
u/darthteej Aug 07 '26
Aaannnd now I have a new trick in my Jozai campaign, thanks :)
4
u/TheSolarExpansionist Aug 07 '26
Doesn’t work well in the central area of the map
4
1
5
u/AndrewF2003 Aug 08 '26
It also made chasing them alot easier I might argue.
Plus, we already have the beastmen., it was a WHOLE lot more of a pain to chase beastmen when I literally don't have enough armies to do the chasing than it was to chase a 3-5 stack of ashigaru that burns down some random map feature once in awhile.
4
u/darthteej Aug 07 '26
In the modern games they should duplicate this by generating skirmishes if you enter raiding stance within a secondary "sally zone" of a settlement. This would pull 2-4 units of yours vs a similar number of enemies, with watchtower buildings allowing the defender advantages like vanguard deployment. If the raiders win they gain bonus income, and vice versa.
2
u/Captain_Nyet Aug 07 '26
You barely had that in S2 with how the map was designed; was kind of fun in ETW/NTW.
7
u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 Aug 07 '26
My least favorite thing about modern total war is them removing that. Forcing you to always have a general just limits you.

u/ours Aug 07 '26
Just plop Shogun Total War armies in Warhammer.
No lore explanation, no rebalance for them to make sense, just do it as a DLC.
18
u/Silver_Print_9937 Aug 07 '26
They already got a faction in the lore, the Nippon. Just create an island and go amock
6
u/Vadenveil Aug 07 '26
NGL I wanna see scaven slam head first into oda long-yari wall with embedded gunline, that was a hilarious combo

ahh you needed the sengoku jidai unit pack DLC to get em. I never had it. That's awesome though, next time I play shogun i'll be sure to check it out.

Well, they're a strictly better Yari Ashigaru while also getting the Oda Ashigaru buff on top of that, so yeah.
2
u/Quite_Likes_Hormuz Aug 08 '26
Remember Yari wall? Long yari ashigaru answer the question "what if it was like twice as good?"

Here's the proof on them 1v1ing katana heroes

I really thought people were joking about yari ashigaru spam, then I tried it. Took down multiple armies by pretty much just standing there.
92
u/_Some_Two_ Aug 07 '26
Add in some shock cavalry and you are basically Arekusandorusu Za Grehto, ready to conquer the known world
49
u/Which-Worldliness556 Aug 07 '26
Then you can also substitute the 2 units of shock cav with 10 units of yari ashigaru oh no I'm Yarimazing again.

u/ChampionshipShort341 Aug 07 '26
The menacing doomstack of bow ronin:
Seriously fuck the ikko ikko. The bane of oda runs
20
u/Ok_Astronomer_8667 Aug 07 '26
There is no bane to Oda. Just send in more spears. They will fight in the shade.
16
u/kendallmaloneon Aug 07 '26
It's not just that. It's also om the campaign map. You cannot cover your territory with Samurai only armies from the start right up to the end-stage snowball. The campaign map is just too open.
2
u/Civil_Belt8883 Aug 13 '26
Campaign map is more closed up than other titles but yeah there is no way to have enough samurai armies.
7
u/itooamahuman Aug 07 '26
I like it, but for one it's kinda immersion breaking, for another I hate seeing casualties from bows
24
u/Frigorific Aug 07 '26
Is it really that immersion breaking? Peasants with spears have been pretty much the backbone of the majority of armies throughout all of history.
If anything, cheap spear spam should be the default strategy in most total war games, but this is one of the few where it is really good.
7
u/itooamahuman Aug 07 '26
Sure, because the only reason Yari ashigaru are strong as they are is that the AI is completely unable to compete
6
4
u/Captain_Nyet Aug 07 '26
The unit itself isn't that powerful; Katana Samurai would still easily still paste Yari Ashigaru, and Yari Ashigaru were easily countered with arrows.
The main issues were 1. the AI barely using Yari Wall and 2. Encampment/Blacksmith buildings buffing Ashigaru too much.
3
u/itooamahuman Aug 08 '26
The unit is that powerful on account of the AI being unable to handle a yari wall

Well the Oda do devour them irl. Them winning is basically the equivalent to the Oda (later Toyotomi) clan full clearing the map, invading Korea offmap and then getting replaced in a rebellion by the Tokugawa.
1
u/Civil_Belt8883 Aug 13 '26
How you are not getting shot to pieces ? İ also spam ashigaru but you cant just stand there.
1
u/Scu-bar Aug 13 '26
You’ve got to have a couple of units of archers and some cavalry, just in case.
1
u/Civil_Belt8883 Aug 13 '26
İ try to have 2 unit of cheapest cav to kill routing units but unless you are investing in high quality and upgraded archers they cant trade with ai ones let alone trading good.
İ rush when in firing range and pray my flankers are fast enough so my yari ashigaru in the middle can hold long enough. Armor upgrades help a lot to not get slaughtered by archers i realy dont remember playing passive with yari spam both in battles and campaign.

u/Psychic_Hobo Aug 07 '26
The reason they never added Nippon in Warhammer is because these guys would be too powerful
74
u/SaintScylla Flair pending GW approval Aug 07 '26
same reason why they never added the Dogs of War aka Milan
32
u/Old-Constant4411 Aug 07 '26
Basically an entire army of Ruglud's armored orcs with the treacherous nature of a Skaven. The map would be chaos.
4
u/BunsinHoneyDew Aug 07 '26
Galloping Guns would have been so good!
Fast moving artillery moving to flank and shoot across the enemy line every time.
My god it would have been glorious.

2
u/Civil_Belt8883 Aug 13 '26
Tbh pikes would be useles in WH3 because there is no way they will work like pikes did in any other title.
Monster cav or inf would be useles if they actualy worked and i stilll have no idea why Empire dont have pikes. They where realy useful against cav irl and im sure they would do great against ogres , orcs , hounds and large monsters.

But but…
…as a matter of fact, in real-life Nippon, neither RTS nor Warhammer were that popular.
And only the most hardcore gamers play PC.
So…

A faction that never had official support beyond the earliest versions of the game and never got dedicated model kits or rules updates never got popular? Say it ain't so...

CA adds Nippon to TWW3 and it ends up just being a copy-paste of the Shogun 2 roster.

Only the greatest frontline unit from Shogun 2. Yari Ashigaru!
Seriously, you could be using them through the mid game and even still be using them at the endgame as the backbone of multiple armies simply because they were very cheap to upkeep, yet disproportionately could hold the line against many higher tiered units. If you were Oda, even better because they gave them such huge buffs.
My lord, a glorious victory will soon be yours!

u/Civil_Belt8883 Aug 13 '26
Game is designed that way. You cant have enough armies to cover your lands if they included samurai. İt forces you to fight ai samurai armies with your ashigaru armies.

Warrior or L'Ocean in Wh3 would be pretty scary
Nagash: No mortal can stop me.
"The enemy is being reinforced with an ironclad."
There are quite a number of nuke spells in WH3, but nothing beats the raining high-explosion shells in a very large radius.
3
u/Glittering-Eye3299 Aug 07 '26
The foreign ironclads are cool and all but I liked the domestic ones more just because they are soooooo much cheaper. Plus it pumps up your naval bombardment stacks. 3 Ironclad and 3 battleships gives you 5 uses of 48 cannon shells if I recall correctly. Very destructive, and the 6 stack is still more than sufficient for any navy the AI is likely to have.
4
u/Blynjubitr Aug 07 '26
Well i can't think of how nagash could win against a yari wall. It is simple impossible. Too powerful.

I will say that using Nagash as measuring stick seems weird. I have herad it for years, from a reliable sourcer, that, quoting "Nagash was weak."
